Amazing! One thing I really appreciate is both the slow-mo and close-up views of the coach's skates - this can help you see things like how he's stopping on the toes of his skates as opposed to the heels (take note rollerbladers!). Also balance and ankle, knee, hip and core strength are so key that if you have these, you can hockey stop on one foot - inside or outside edge, or two feet. Beginners like myself really only focus on the two feet, outside edge, hockey stop. Also it's nice to see how the coach uses his crossovers directly after making sharp turns to maintain stability and not lose an edge. Trusting your balance and edges is very difficult for new skaters so it's cool to see this advanced work and how he doesn't doubt his edges or worry about falling when performing these techniques.

The double outside edge drill is also known as an eagle stop. I can’t open my hips wide enough to do that. As usual, awesome skating and stick work.

Steve probably uses somewhere around a 1/2 cut on his skates because when he does tight turns he often does a turning stop instead of a full sharp turn. 1/2 cuts are shallow cuts that help with speed and ease of stopping. 3/8 are the opposite spectrum, they are deep cuts that help with turning/maneuverability and more sudden but forced stops. Stopping around those turns appears to be easier than doing the turn itself, which discounts the use of a deep cut sharpen, and suggests a shallow cut sharpen.

What is the sharpening radius of your skates ??? какой радиус заточки Ваших коньков???
@vladvlad9834

literally slows down on every turn. definitely not outside edge. edges grip. he's using a flat edge, slowing down and the reaccelerating. But what do I know ;)
@tkoze
@tkoze 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I guess the debate is: is it better to brake/turn and potentially take a tighter turn but with a loss of speed, OR, is it better to not slow down through the turn and potentially take a wider turn? I use both. I think it's good to know everything and pick and choose what's best for the game scenario.

Yeah, this is a different and more recent approach than “tight gliding” for lack of a better term, although he is definitely on his outside edge.
