I have walked a similar path in Asturias. The route or path of the Cares is a hiking route in northern Spain located in the Picos de Europa National Park - PR-PNPE 3[1] -, the busiest route in the entire Cantabrian mountain range. The route is part of the old crossing that linked, following the deep gorge that the short Cares River has carved in the massif, two small and remote mountain villages, Posada de Valdeón in León and Poncebos in Asturias. The current path is the result of the refurbishment and improvement in the years 1945-1950 of a path that had been built to build a canal to feed a small power station inaugurated in 1921 in Camarmeña-Poncebos.
