At 3:40 ish.. Mike says something super important and it applies to a multitude of folks playing .. the learning process in soloing must go beyond the key of the song.. he nailed it with his impersonation of a break that really never broke out of the key.... Play through the song and with progression and your playing , fretboard knowledge and solos will get better.

My wife bought me a mandolin for Christmas ( I think it was her attempt at getting my to try something other than the banjo). I found Mike Marshall’s ArtistWorks beginner course free through my local public library. He really simplifies the fundamentals in manageable segments that are not overwhelming. I encourage anyone who’s interested to check it out.

For anyone who might think that their hands are too big to play mandolin, just take a gander at Mike's beefy mitts!

I agree, Mark. Wouldn't it be fun to hear Mike and Don Julin and Jim Richter together? I think that would be a blast!

I'm reasonably sure he made a vague Spinal Tap reference there - "Really the greatest instrument of all" hah!

this comment seems mean spirited and just not really true...Sam was a pioneer who was pushing the instrument forward probably before you were born
