On the backhand out in front the paddle blocks my view of the ball. How do I compensate for that?

Great explanation of defending the lob James as I need to improve on that.

Hi James, new subscriber here. The technical aspects of the roll and flick volley are valuable and insightful. However, I feel your viewers would greatly benefit from some actual demo clips of these techniques. These can easily be inserted into your podcast. Good luck.

Hey James, I like your tip in this episode about how to push off with your leg and move backwards with a side shuffler to get a lob. Also appreciate you answering my question about the two hand backhand back in episode 48 and 49. I signed up for your newsletter. Is there anything else needed to enter the giveaway? I appreciate that your podcast focuses on coaching and game improvement without a lot of extra fluff.

My game went to a different level when I incorporated the backhand flick. Allows you to shorten time by reaching (I am also 6'3" with a 79" wingspan) into kitchen and flicking down toward the opponent's feet, into an open space or "body bag" nearest opponent. James - just began catching your podcasts and your tips are always with a fresh analytical look which I appreciate. Good luck in 2024 and I bet you are top 5 in mens game by end of year. BTW: To make your BH flick more powerful - take a 10 - 12LB. kettlebell and do reverse wrist curls each day - I've been able to go from 30 - 35 reps to now 200 in about 5 mos but the only problem is to control the power as some flicks hit down the middle occasionally go long.

James, nice explanation on the flick vs roll. In terms of the action on the ball, is the result the same? With both techniques, do you essentially get the same topspin roll action? And, is the flick or roll easier for ball placement? I understand the flick shrinks the kitchen.

Any tips for knowing when to reset vs attack in transition? Have started to see some pros hit a 3rd shot drop and if the 4th comes back at their knee to waist level, they rip the 5th ball from the transition zone. I’ve been working on this but I almost “premove” or preset that I’m going to rip or going to reset and that gets me in trouble

Good stuff….two questions, isn’t a roll better the farther below the net and better for a fourth shot keeping players back…flick nvz? Second question…been working on fourth shot….when someone drops first thought is taking it out of the air and rolling or flicking …but how do you gadge if you can do more damage by stepping back? Also I seem to be a bit late on the step back and not quite ready ( have watched Ben and some other players) and they seem to have like 1-2-3 small shuffle to get ready….anyway any advice on that whole topic would be great.

Most pros that foot fault at the kitchen is due to pushing off with their non-dominate foot first instead of pivoting the dominate foot first then push off.

Hey James! I am a huge fan of yours. I have 2 questions if you don't mind. What do you think of Ben John's move to steal your backhand dink roll? 😮 Second: what drilling / playing ratio would be the closest to optimal for a newish player?

14mm vs 16mm paddle at the 4.5 and below levels? i see almost everyone uses 16mm but most of the pro's use 14mm to help with speed ups etc. Curious on your thoughts if it could be a secret weapon (not really secret) for lower level players.
