At one time I had a bunch of ammo and firearms and a friend has a big farm. My cousin, is a mutual friend and he used to say "When SHTF, I'm bringing the family to your house and we'll load up the guns and head to Dave's farm." One time I asked him, "So I've got the guns, ammo and other stuff, Dave has the farm for food, what are you bringing?" My cousin just looked at me and said, "I'm bringing my family." I just shook my head and said, "You need to have supplies or a skill that can be useful if you want to join a group of other people, they're not just going to take you and your family in if you're not an asset."

I agree. If they can't supply some food or a skill to help with group survival ,hell no! Find a hole and crawl in, your on your own. Some people can be so stupid. Those of us that are in our 50's or older can remember grandparents and great grandparents canning up late summer, early fall harvests and meats like beef, pork, chicken and deer to get them through the winter months and beyond. How many of us still do the same thing? So many times we get lazy and just buy what's on the shelves at the local grocery store.

I felt the same way about multi tools. I never saw myself needing or wanting one. That is until my daughter got me one for Christmas several years ago, so I dutifully started carrying it on my belt. I found myself using it all the time. I use the knife, pliers, screwdrivers, there's a saw blade on it, surprisingly, even the file gets used once in a while. I'd be lost without it. I misplaced it once so I went right out and bought another one. Fortunately I then found the first one.

@wandabrindamour8473 This has already happened in some recent disasters. Sometimes they have to shut off the gas for safety reasons. Maybe she could look at a solar generator as a backup to that, so she can at least keep some electronics charged up (phones, flashlights, etc).

I hear so many say, "I don't need toiletries. Sootch, Thanks for promoting the use of a proper flashlight. I see so many people, including Preppers just grabbing the nearest $2 flashlight instead of going for quality. As you mentioned, i can turn down the lumens on a good light, but i can't turn up the lumens on a cheap light. My backup flashlight is always as good as my daily regardless of price. It doesn't mean i don't have some inexpensive lights for handing out if needed, but my personal is always a higher grade. In regards to the Mossberg vs Maverick, the Maverick is an economy version of the 500 series. One main difference is the Maverick has a single action bar, where ALL 500 series has the twin action bars. It isn't just the 590.

And up until recently I’ve always carried a g19 or my m&p 2.0 which is the same size as the g19 so it’s not like I was carrying a small handgun that didn’t require a special belt. But I can say it’s a lot nicer carrying my g43x now vs a “compact”. I just like having a higher capacity mag is why I never carried anything smaller until now with the shield arms and psa 15+1 mags for the g43x.

One of my prep items is a few boxes of aluminum foil to wrap up electronics, cordless tools, and cordless batteries to try and prevent EMP damage. Sure there could be a total surprise EMP attack, but most likely we will have some sort of clues that will give enough advance notice that it’s about to happen. If you decide to wrap your stuff and it doesn’t happen, great. At most you lost a few dollars and a little time using it to wrap your stuff up. Just go buy a few more boxes for the next time.

Being a prepper is not about just collecting stuff and having food in the house, it is about examining and ranking risk, mitigating those risks through skills and plans. You all have seen the food pyramid, imagine a prepper pyramid for your life and location. At the bottom you have the typical month by month lifestyle. Next level up, you have those things that happen often enough that most people recognizes the risk, a day or two without power, a typical disease the flu, cold, whatever puts everyone in the family on the couch for a couple days to a week, the car don't start, two feet of snow, six inches of rain, small earthquake knocks stuff of the shelf plumbing problem in the house. The level above that, bad storm that damages your house. or the car needs major repair or you get laid off for months, major injury or illness that puts a husband or wife out of commission for months, major eartquake destroys major infrastructure, damages home, an economic crisis like 2008 or a disease like 2020, fuel and food shortages, transportation strikes, credit card outages And this goes up the pyramid with things at the top like invasion of your country, major economic crisis that makes the money, stocks, bonds, all worthless, EMP shutting off electricity for a long time, death in immediate family. Around the edges of the pyramid you have things like being accosted in the parking lot of a grocery store, having a thug break into the house, riots impeding your way home from work, Many of these problems can be mitigated by having cash on hand or simple tools and skills. A firearm typically won't help when the home earners are sick or the car needs work. But having jumper cables in the car or one of those battery backkups for a quick start. Having a snow shovel in the car in the winter and so on. Think about things.

The phone flashlight is handy for short intervals, but is a terrible long-term replacement for a real flashlight. In addition, your phone battery will die very quickly when used for that purpose.
@ChrisCalmtheCrazy6 күн бұрын
I think the most important thing about a good flashlight is that it should be waterproof, drop proof to at least 16 feet, 2000+ lumens, light throw to at least 650 feet, and have signaling effects like strobe. And, from my many experiences, it is extremely important to be able to see the reflection of light on a set of eyeballs 200 yards away. I don't know any phones that can do that. And, you can find a very affordable flashlight with these features and a few that are slightly bigger than a pen with those specs, if ability to put in a pocket is a concern.

I noticed how animals react to strobe lamps when the need arises to clear them away from an entrance. There’s the neighborhood cat that is teritorial and will not leave. I use the strobe and it flees off my deck. Also great for heating types of surfaces to reproduce warmth. Never tried it on smooth rocks but could make a nice hand warmer from being heated with a 1300 lumen flashlight.

As for buying time so things get better... The hardest thing to handle is - to not go crazy when you hiding in your bunker. When you don't have a freedom and your bunker is your jail - nothing else matter. As bad things will last until both sides kill too much - that will take years or decades.
