I'm guessing that Marc doesn't like Sat Nav either. Why have directions displayed in front of you on a screen when you can pull over to the side of the road (hopefully not on a motorway) and unfold a ginormous ordnance survey map to try to work out where you are going?
@marchanna7 ай бұрын
It's hilarious that Doug compares using a sophisticated, dynamic and high-tech Sat Nav technology to reading redundant, inaccurate, static and brain-dead ASL bling plastered all over the VASL map. Someone please tell the gentleman that if he's gonna make fun of me, he should use an intelligent contrast, for pity's sake! 😍

@@marchanna I am picturing a scene depicting four ASL players from Yorkshire reminiscing about the "old times". I can imagine the conversation... "When I were a lad, I used to play ASL by sitting at a table pushing grubby stained counters around a board. I had to sit within a few feet of a real opponent who would be slugging beer and belching every five minutes while stuffing his face with crisps and making the counters even grubbier every time he touched them and knocked over my concealed stacks!" "That's nothing. When I were a lad, I didn't have a fancy electronic rulebook. Oh no, I had to buy two editions of the rules and write in all of the errata and updates in pencil!" "Luxury! When I were a lad, I didn't have a fancy computer programme to show me when grain was out of season or was transformed to swamp. Oh no, I had to rely on remembering from a sheet of paper called a scenario card." "A scenario card? Ha! I didn't have no scenario cards. I had a dog that could shred 'em in five seconds. Still does, the little bugger..." "Call that a dog? My dog chewed up so many scenario cards that I had to have my standard SSRs inscribed on bits of stone. Still 'ave 'em.. 1. Thou shalt not kindle 2. Thou shalt not allow thy AFV crews to leave their vehicles unless thy opponent smites them 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy Perry in vain 4. Thy cavalry shall only consist of elite kamikaze units 5. Thou shalt not massacre thy prisoners 6. Thy majority squad type is lax 7. Thy squads shall have an ELR of 1 8. Thy sniper attack will only be attempted following a DR of 2 9. Thy wind shall always blow towards thee 10. Thy smoke will only be placed on board immediately before gusts" "ASL players these days don't know they were born! They can sit in their beds at night and look at a game on their laptop screens in the dark and have all of the information that they need right in front of 'em without disturbing the wife because some stupid bugger took the time to lay it all out for 'em. Too bloody lazy to get out of bed, go to the living room in the freezing cold, switch on the lights and find a scenario card!" "Those were the days..." kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5aaqIBmhqhogqc

Presetup files are similar. Typically the units pulled are inaccurate. Sometimes the map is incorrect as well
@marchanna6 ай бұрын
@@StewsReplay yeah, well like I said, all that these kinds of 'helpful' files do is create more systemic work for the players, who have to check them for accuracy. It goes for all these amateurish play aids for this and all sorts of games. The other issue with setup files is they don't necessary survive transitions as VASL and VASSAL are upgraded, so eventually they become useless anyway. Too much trouble to figure all of this out, by St. George, I say! :)

As someone who plays exclusively with VASL, I don't want a scenario card with counters on it taking up desk space where the counters can be bumped, so the HTML turn track, SAN, ELR etc is very handy. I don't bother with the VC's though, I just use that box for spare counters. The HTML Chapter H notes and National Characteristic notes I don't bother with. So for me at least some of the "bling" is actually quite useful.

interesting. I actually negotiated with my protagonist Doug to move everything except the "marketing bling card (that's what it is)" to the casualties bin. The Vehicle information shows up much larger in there than on the sides of the map. He was quite happy with the solution. BTW you don't need to put counters on the scenario card to have it handy. I have it around to read SSRs etc. But look, if all you play is VASL then you aren't really playing the real game and don't know what that is like. VASL makes it too easy and these programmers who keep adding bling to the program don't realize how much they change the game. cheers enjoy

Apparently, it's necessary that I add the following guideline for all: if a user or subscriber on my channel makes substandard comments anonymously, there is a high probability of deletion. Those who wish to engage in such antics belong on a game forum, not here. This isn't a thread subject to petty back-and-forth one-upmanship between incognito mask-wearing goons. KZbin channels are run by their creators who determine which comments stay or go. Hence, if users or subscribers want to do that sort of thing and avoid such consequences, by all means, go make your own response video on KZbin, thereby tying your real name and video image with your remarks -- like I do.

Gotcha. Add more bling, lol.

hahaha yes the more bling you add your end, the less I'll need my end. win-win :)

Damnit, I can’t find anything to correct! I guess you won’t be using my new XMas tree extension. Another issue with the vehicle gun information on the Xmas tree ornaments is that it’s easily edited, and a nefarious player can modify to throw off their opponent. The off board grid is finicky. Board 0 trimmed to 3 hexes is just perfect (abutted board.

@@StewsReplay I don't have to use your pet extensions; if I don't install them, I don't use them. On the other hand, if people add this HTML Bling to our scenario layout, I can't delete it without it being deleted for them, too, so to be courteous I have to look at the tacky redundant useless information that makes the layout ugly. With you, I get the free market economy, I get choice, I'm very happy with that. With this, I get posters plastered all over my game that will make me look churlish if I delete them! heh
@StewsReplay7 ай бұрын
Maybe your opponent can HIP them so ONLY he can see them? You can certainly have Doug or some other VASL guru add that characteristic to that Label chit. @@marchanna
@marchanna7 ай бұрын
@@StewsReplay well, remember this video is all about humor and people taking themselves too seriously about ASL. If I really meant to whine and ask others to change their ways, I'd be stooping to that level. They can wear their tin foil hats, I'll just have to put up with them :) cheers

Given that it takes two minutes to create a VASL scenario set-up I don't know why anybody would want to use somebody else's set-up file. That seems to be absurd
@marchanna7 ай бұрын
well, you're right, a simple, truly ftf setup would only take 2 minutes, but when I do that, the bling-lovers add stuff to them anyway. You can't keep your opponents from adding stuff and some insist on doing the setup first so they don't have to ask for agreement! Then, of course, it would be me who looks churlish for deleting all that rubbish! 😇

@@marchanna I do have completely the opposite opinion for SK scenarios. An SK player may have only picked up SK1 last week and know next to nothing about VASL and needs all the help he can get with pre-made scenario set-ups. Not information overload levels but entry points, VCs, anything that might be mis-read or missed, put it in so his paper juggling is kept to a minimum.
@marchanna7 ай бұрын
@@presterjohn3410 sure, okay, but I don't do SK material -- check out Stew's channel for that, although he may have moved on as well lately.
@StewsReplay6 ай бұрын
@@presterjohn3410I think the SK players NEED to do the footwork. The scenario card has all the info you ever need. The only issue I’ve come across is when the players don’t share the scenario and end up using different versions, which is far more common since they have been reprinted. The eAnnual and eJournal don’t have the original scenarios represented. One player using their 92 annual scan vs the e92Ann will play different games…not good
