Right, just imagine one could press the pause button in real life and rewind to try another option. Might confuse the defender thinking what is going on here. Kidding ...

Absolutely superb. Seeing moving examples is so much more effective than reading small print. I never really understood BP movement so never used it - and now I do. Attackers need all the help they can get in ASL!

Brilliant how it came together and you compared /(visually !!!) the normal/tradional infantry movement with bypassing moevement in the last chapter of this video. As we know: "A picture says more than a thousand words." Even better when added with your good explanations.

After watching this for the second time, again picking up some points I missed first time round and getting a better understanding how bypass works (and loving it), I've decided to call ASL "Hex'n Counter Chess." Thinking and "seeing" throught a) which options are availible, b) which consequences could follow and c) what to do. I don't see any other game system which produces this in the way. Except there's games out there I'm unaware of.

A lot of tactical level games give this feel. But ASL has another level of detail that makes every scenario a new experience: terrain, units, weapons, LOS, victory conditions, wind, etc. ASL is basically a miniatures ruleset played with 2D components. Edit: Also, thanks for the donation!!!

So, I've played a lot of ASL through the years but have not played in at least 2-3 years. I am about to start up again with a friend so I am reading through some of the rules again to get re-acquainted with the game. These videos have been great refreshers! Much thanks!

30:00 I don't understand why LOS is not blocked into BB7 by the hedge, but is blocked into AA8 by the hedge on the unit bypassing. I hope the LOS video next will address this. Thanks for the series.
@ASLAcademyАй бұрын
Even though the units are bypassing the woods in AA8, they are still IN the AA8 hex, and the BB7 hedge blocks all LOS to units IN that hex. People can get a bit confused about infantry and vehicle bypass. Units are still in those hexes during bypass.

Another terrific video, Neal - thanks very much. I agree - when I was making the climb from SK to Full ASL I was really sorry Bypass had been left out of SK. I posted that sentiment on one of the ASL forums at the time and received a dismissive “fly swat” response from MMP personnel, saying (fairly) that “some things had to be left out or it wouldn’t have been for beginners, would it?” Fair enough. I guess Bypass ranks behind my two other aspects of Full I think they should have included in SK: #2: Snipers, if for no other reason than to cut down on SKs too numerous “Hail Mary” 4 up 3 shots. And the #1 thing I think they absolutely should have included in SK was reverse movement for vehicles. Virtually no additional rules overhead and leaving it out truly has a negative impact on the tactics of playing the SK game (the only way for SK armor to disengage is to laboriously turn around and expose flank and rear shots in doing so). Bypass Movement adds such a fun dynamic to Full ASL that it makes it easier for me to put up with a few other rules that I think often clutter the game and undercut the pace of the full game.

No reverse only forward... Banzai!!!!
@tommarshall-113th3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you don’t often use Reverse Movement; you know what you’re doing with vehicles. RM is for guys like me - don’t particularly care for vehicles, don’t particularly know HOW to use vehicles, so I often get caught needed to back out of a bonehead move made with vehicles. Oddly enough, it’s not their rules so much as it’s knowing how to use the rules, the traditional 2 stages of learning any wargame: learn the rules first, then learn what to do with the rules you’ve learned. That’s what’s great about your boot camp vids; they explain the rules, but they also touch on what to do with them once you know them. I have no doubt that once you get to vehicles, half of the total views will be from me!

is there no vehicle bypass in SK either? that's pretty major isn't it? agree seems like small rules overhead for a great mechanic
@pedroorpheus3 жыл бұрын
@@ASLAcademy yes, quite bit more overhead. but gives AFV use whole new dimension. guessing there is no overrun either.

6:07 Note that the continued bypass after the first 2 hexsides is a different expenditure. 1MF for the first bypass, and 1 more MF to continue to move around the obstacle, either 1 or 2 more hexsides. I'm sure that's what Neil meant but it's important for DFF purposes.
@DeathTrooper2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly; moving from hex BB7 to Z7 with by-pass through AA7 along three hex sides costs 3 MF? (2 MF for going through AA7 along three hex sides, then another 1MF to enter Z7?) Then why not just enter the building in AA7 (2MF) then into Z7, for the same 3 MF total?
@StewsReplay2 жыл бұрын
@@DeathTrooper because maybe you can get shot in the building as I mentioned above And not in bypass

Thanks for the video. Clear demostrated and functional, although the examples in the last part are a little bit rough (I think in one or two cases the firer has even better bonus to fire at the Bypassing unit), but still they served their intention. I enjoyed them. Just one small thing, at the beginning You used Movement Point, although it is clear what You mean, but IIHO it would be better to differ between MF/MP for future use (when it comes to vehicle).

Question: If the Finnish leader is bypassing AA7 along the AA7/AA8 hex side, and he is considered to be in hex AA7 could the Russian squad in CC5 fire at the leader at the AA7/AA8/BB7 vertice? Now, if the leader was taking that path to bypass the woods in AA8 that shot would be blocked, correct? I was typing this as you did your last example so I think you answered the 2nd question already. Great video again. This helping me get ready for my first ASL game here soon.

Great video! With your second example, you inadvertently showed how sometimes it is better to use traditional movement (getting a +2 TEM for the first wooden house) than using bypass movement (and only getting +1 TEM for the hedge). To further complicate your options though, traditional movement in this example leaves you with a CX counter, instead of no CX counter by taking the riskier bypass move. Isn't ASL great? :)

These videos are fantastic. I'm going to start playing the game. Is Version 4 the most "recent" version?
@thesixth23302 жыл бұрын
Great video! My only critique would be to use real-world situations so we could see why a unit would use bypass. The 'for whatever reason' illustrates the rule but fails to provide a real-world example to nail it home. For instance, when would a firer shoot, center dot in a hex at a moving squad using bypass instead of a vertex? The leader starting in the BLDG hex AA7, wouldn't start there and then move using those hex sides, correct? It would be starting in hex BB7 and moving around the BLDG in AA7 if defending from shots from the Soviets in Z8? Unit Number 2, (26 Min) uses bypass to enter the BLDG in Y7 without being CX. You but a text box stating the unit could be fired upon in the back vertex. My question is, what use would be using bypass in this case instead of just using X8-Y8-Y7? I think adding bypass wouldn't be possible without adding a bunch of other rules as well. Thanks Again, indispensable resource!!!

thank you , what if the hexside is a wall or hedge like between V3 and W3 ? let s say i want a unit in V2 to bypass W3 along V3 W3 hexside ?
@ASLAcademy Жыл бұрын
You'd have to pay 1 MF to get over the hedge, 1 MF to bypass (open ground), then leave via the gap in the hedge. If you moved through V3 it would cost 3 MP (1 over the hedge, 2 into the building, then out the hedge gap).
