I found an error. The FPF at 30:45 you rolled 11. So both units should break directly. The Random selection is only för Casualty MC and Heat of Battle. The IFT DR is the MC.
@kozimandius

38:20 You forgot the MC for the FPF roll of 8. (ASL - The mark of a veteran player is how fast you find the rules you forget in the Rule book, and how fast you spot them after in the AAR! ) ;)

I caught the same error. The original role of 11 breaks everything in the stack correct ? 😮

At 38:00 why do you get a FFNAM bonus if it isn’t in the first fire segment ? It’s in the FPF phase. The first fire non assault movement bonus shouldn’t apply correct?

@@Icarus931 FINAL PROTECTIVE FIRE (FPF) is not the same as 8.4 FINAL FIRE. From ASLRB "8.31 FINAL PROTECTIVE FIRE (FPF): FPF is a Subsequent First Fire option" So FFNAM/FFMO is in effect.

Can’t say enough how helpful your videos are in getting a person back up to speed. All of the old original SL rules are coming back…albeit slowly 😊

Very important discussion here. IF you don't follow the examples, you MUST learn them fully to play the game.

Ahhhh defensive fire. This is the real chess game within ASL - the attacker tries to lure the defender to fire early and the defender tries to withhold his fire for as long as possible. My personal rule is to never FIRST fire against a unit(s) who uses assault movement, unless they are in open ground (with -1 FFMO) or if I want that residual fire in the hex they are in. Other than that, just wait for juicier moving targets - and if nothing transpires, then just fire at them in the defensive fire phase. Another great video explaining the intricacies of defensive first fire, subsequent and FPF. I still believe there are two errors that you haven't corrected in the video yet for some reason, and both are mentioned below: 1. the FPF - both units should break and the IFT DR is the actual roll for the MC - you don't make any other rolls. 2. half squads can either fire with their inherent FP or use the MG; they cannot combine both. Other than these, it looks good!

Everytime I think I have a good grasp of the basics, I see a video like this and (re)learn something. Thanks for this series. EDIT At 30:30 you roll two NMC's (when they tied for RS), whereas I always thought the original DR (11 in this case) WAS the NMC roll, based off the reading of A8.31. EDIT EDIT Disregard, I see you answered an earlier post on this. 😀

I found another error at 40:30. A HS can not fire both the LMG and inherent FP at the same time.

On your first FPF roll, why didn’t the Germans break with your IFT roll of 11? Isn’t the verbiage in the rules state the original IFT roll is a NMC check. So wouldn’t you take the 11 and compare it to each Morale Rating of the units involved in FPF?

Great service you are providing, really nice clean videos. Final Def shot by HS should be either 2 or 3 FP as the HS can't fire his inherent and the LMG.

The random selection for FPF failed MC is wrong. They all break. You only do RS if there is a k result or heat of battle

Great video, very interesting and useful to me! Can you please clarify one point: after the leader has directed the MG fire in the then fixed covered arc, are you really allowed to use that leader modifier for different attacks with the squad FP without the MG (e.g. around 29:00 against the 6-6-6) ? I thought A7.53 prevented this but I might be wrong. Thanks!
@donaldprevost3523
@donaldprevost3523 2 жыл бұрын
@@ASLAcademy Thanks for the response. I always played it as you did in the video, but I recently re-read A7.53 and doubted. It would be so "frustrating" not to be able to use a leader modifier! If indeed you can't, I can only rationalise that by the assumption that all the action in the movement/defensive fire phase is simultaneous, and the leader is actually in the process of directing the MMG in the covered arc as the 6-6-6 is approaching from the other side. A bunch of soldiers in the squad can fire at the 6-6-6, but the leader's attention is with other soldiers manning the MMG. Seen this way, it would make sense. Anyway, I have only ever played ASL with friends/solo so we can house rule, but I was wondering what expert ASLers like you do and/or what they would do, say, in tournament play, if you have a take on that.

Confused 10.22 says A leader may not apply his own leadership DRM to his own MC/TC, great Videos these help a lot and reding rules enforces
@ASLAcademy
@ASLAcademy Жыл бұрын
This is true, a leader cannot apply his modifier to his own MC/TC. Another leader in the same hex can apply his leadership to another leader if hit morale is higher.

If you don't declare assault movement before making smoke attempt, would that subject unit making smoke attempt to potential FFMO and FFNAM penalties afterwards?
@phildraper3401
@phildraper3401 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and this often causes issues with a MMC wishing to place smoke and then move into it. An MMC moving without benefit of leadership cannot place smoke (2 MF) in an adjacent location and then move into it (2 MF assuming OG 1 MF + 1 MF for SMOKE) while assault moving. Total of 4 MF which equals the units total available and a unit cannot assault move if it uses all of its not double time movement allowance. I have occasionally declared assault movement, placed smoke in an adjacent location and then realized I can no longer move into the smoke.
@kozimandius
@kozimandius 2 жыл бұрын
If you are willing to run risks, you can also declare extra MF expenditure in the assault move as long as it is in the 'Location'. for example I could declare a 2 MF assault move into OG to use the extra MF to try for a smoke in the assault move hex, or a 3 MF assault move to do so to an adjacent hex. I would still subject myself to the defensive fires, but after the first MF expenditure, I could could try for the smoke and then negate the FFMO penalty and get the smoke DRM if successful. Not recommended against big stacks, but if you have a large smoke exponent this can draw out first fire so others can move into subsequent fire. It can work at long range, or if you spend 2 MF to get into shell holes (Red Barricades) or into entrenchments, then 1 MF to smoke, it can be fairly effective for follow up assault troops if the first guy into the street can pull it off.
