I passed my driving test last week, and drove on my own for the first time a few days later. It was only a short detour to pick my friend up, and then straight to college. I was so nervous! I put some music on very quietly and spoke to myself the whole time, it sounds crazy, but it worked! I encountered no issues at all, and as I parked up outside of my college, I felt so proud of myself! The drive home from college was even better (although one of my teachers was driving behind me for ages, which made me very anxious!) Being able to give my friend a lift home made me feel really good. I did stall once, but it’s bound to happen due to it being a new car that I’m not yet use to; but I kept calm, and corrected it well. The independence is amazing. As long as you stay calm and always THINK about everything you’re doing, everything will be fine :)

I had to drive from buying my first car from South Wales to Bristol on a motorway. It was petrifying, especially with articulated lorries alongside me and not having driven on a motorway before. My friend was driving in front and advised me “just focus on your lane and your driving, and drive slowly but safely”. I never forgot that first drive as a solo driver.
@EinkOLED6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't too bad for me since I already had a full motorcycle licence and used to motorways, and riding in general. I was certainly more cautious on narrow roads due to the dimensions of my car but it was an easy transition (20 hours of tuition and first time pass). I didn't feel like I had gained my independence since I achieved that when I started riding a motorcycle.
@foppo1004 жыл бұрын
Lessons should be on the motorway.You should never be petrifeid a weakness of the driving test.

My first motorway drive a couple of weeks ago was 250 miles long, down almost the full M1 - we picked up the car from my cousin's place in Yorkshire and I had to drive it back to London where we live. My dad was next to me, and he did help - I found the 70 sections quite straightforward but it was the work zones with the narrow lanes and 50 limits that were more intimidating, because while I was sticking to 50, most of the large HGVs were sitting on their limiters at 56 mph (they assume the cameras won't kick in until 10% + 2 = 57 mph) and so were overtaking me. But that 250-mile drive means I'm now fully comfortable with the motorway already. The M1 has it all: roadworks zones, stop-start traffic, smart motorways, variable speed limits, slip roads and service areas - so I've had some practice in all of those now. I have found motorways and (to a lesser extent) dual carriageways are the easiest roads to drive on, as the hazards are generally far more predictable than during city driving.

Tip: try putting your bag or coat on the passenger seat! The first time I drove alone, the feeling of 'empty car' freaked me out a bit - no instructor, no family, just silent empty seats!! So for my first few journeys after that, I put my backpack in the passenger seat. It's a small, random thing, but not having an empty seat next to me genuinely helped me feel more relaxed about driving alone, just for those first few journeys. Take your time and don't be too hard on yourself -- you'll feel totally at home on the roads sooner than you expect :)

Great video, as always. I’ve been driving solo for just over two months now. For me, it stopped feeling strange after about a week, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got used to it! Every drive is still a big deal, an “event”. I haven’t driven solo on a motorway yet, I want to do my Pass Plus first. The main thing is to concentrate, carry on doing everything you were taught and treat it all as a learning opportunity. The good news is that physically controlling the car definitely comes more easily the more regularly you do it.

For me my biggest fears after passing my test have been parking in busy car parks and tackling complex roundabouts/junctions I've not been on before. Planning ahead helps with the latter, I'm constantly studying streetview/maps for lane choices before the journey and try to keep them in my head, with the sat nav as an extra aid. Parking somewhere busy took me a little while. I've definitely spent a lot of time after my test practising in empty car parks to get better at parking and I've recently been to a few places that are busier. I've not attempted to park in between two cars just yet but I'll get there eventually!

This video is absolutely helpful for the new drivers. I hardly got my licence however I passed the driving exam at first attempt. Drove quite carefully and kept my calmness on the busy traffic, before the exam I had roughly 50 hours lesson and my instructor and me were extremely anxious and i thought he had feelings about my test would be fail anyway I passed and bought my car a few days ago plus started driving on my own last four days. Firstly I went to work on my own came home totally 40 miles and I was really scared because of it was the first time for me to being in a traffic independently and tonight touched someone’s car as I parked anyway nothing is serious but if the owner of the car realises then the problem gets bigger. I would like to share a few things with the new drivers, i stalled the car at the traffic lights a few times some drivers behind me horned their car and some of them waited patiently even I put “P” mark on my car. So, just do your best and stay always calm guys. All the drivers was like us before they start driving with their single hand 😁 and don’t forget every story should build your experience. Stay safe and be drive carefully that’s it ...

Honestly my first drive alone wasn't scary at all. If anything it was less scary than having someone with me. The experience was weird when I first moved off because I have never moved off without having to wait for someone to be with me but after that it felt completely natural but there was a weird feeling behind it as I was in complete control

Got my first car today! I had to drive at night and on a highway for my first time driving alone I was nervous at first but then started gaining confidence and it went really smooth! I would say just stay calm and definitely have gps if you’re not sure where you’re going (which really helped me) also be extra aware. I have to drive my self to work all this week and back to the car dealership which is a 40 minutes drive but I’m not nervous at all now.

Thank you for this. My friend who is on my insurance part drove my car home and made me change over and drive. I have to say I was so petrified of test driving the car. But I was encouraged as he said your the one who will be driving the car. Because it was petrol and I learnt in a diesel I thought I was going to be stalling. The guy from the company was so reassuring and my mate sat in the back and I was fine.

Getting used to your car is also a good thing to do first before going to busy areas. I drove to one of my family members houses down the road yesterday and the car felt weird to drive but that’s normal but I’m gonna practice somewhere quiet to get used to the pedals and steering. So I’d say if you’ve just passed your test and got your first car, go somewhere quiet and practice your control of the car. It can be parking, reversing, steering, anything

i passed recently (well not really, 8 months ago now) and have only began driving semi regularly in the past month or so. im a very nervous driver which im worried about cos it might make me a dangerous driver. my first few times driving, my dad 'supervised' me - which was basically him shouting at every little mistake i'd make as i got adjusted to my (tiny, so speedy) new car. didn't help that my parents would discourage me from driving on my own until I'd gained more experience :/ definitely not the best start as a new driver

Literally same, I passed in June and have maybe been out once or twice during the day time since and more times at night since it’s super quiet. Other cars terrify me and I panic and get flustered super easily over the littlest mistake. It makes me feel guilty that I haven’t been consistently driving and it’s making me overthink before I sleep every night (2:44am currently). It really is an awful feeling :(

Honestly think there should be so much more focus on what to do once you passed. Its a completely different ball game and diff driving experience when your driving on your own. Advise anyone have a 2 hour motorway lesson as well as ask for lesson on A roads and country lanes people belting it doing 60mph on a little dirt track can barely fit 1 car down is something i felt i was not prepared for no mirror signal manoeuvre can get you ready for that ha. Passed January first time and still find whole thing nervous driving - Rush hour lessons and night lessons would help I feel now as again just different style of driving than doing laps of a quite housing estate Good luck everyone :-)

Unfortunately I'm a backwards failure. It pains me to see these 17 yr olds who easily passed their theories, practicals and are out there driving carefreely whilst balancing amd multitasking th eir social and academic lives. 23 yrs old, failed theory twice, not making any progress in lessons, instructor shouts at me then tells me to be more positive, struggling with even basic manoeuvres & wasting hundreds of pounds. Would it be wise to quit?

Don’t give up just yet - why not try a new instructor or switching to automatic? Good luck either way!

I would go with another driving school. I used the AA and they were fantastic, I would also recommend using the theory test App.

Thats not how driving tuition is supposed to be..its exactly how you lose confidence as this comment proves..im 37 and currently learning- since last may,proper tuition since july,ive had many unexpected issues with driving but a good instructor can take you past it all ,you're only 23 dont waste years not driving get a new instructor ,assess each lesson - what did i do well ,what do i need to work on -never 'i failed on this today' it takes time,dont ever pay anyone to give you less than you're worth

Do not compare yourself to other people. You are you and this is your life. You are trying to achieve something, which means you want it and you need it. Get another school, pass the exams whatever the time it takes. In few years you will be looking back at all of this and smile proudly.
