At 8.40. I noticed (and i`d do the same [in that situation] ) that the `learner` driver didn`t look in the direction he was moving when reversing but relied on mirrors alone. I think this is a much more controlled way. You have better vision at all times looking one way and it`s also done in the best seating position. I understand the need for all around observation checking but surely once as you begin is enough, then carry on exactly as you showed. Yes? No? On my test soon I will be looking mainly in the way i`m going (if I have to do it) but I do recon it`s more awkward having turn around in contorted positions sometimes when it`s much safer not to. Not turning around (*all the time) you have much better vision forwards when looking into your mirrors surely. Your videos are probably the best online, thanks.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 жыл бұрын
We must keep a good awareness of what is happening all around our car as we manoeuvre, and since there are blind spots the mirrors don’t cover we do need to look around with our head through the windows during the manoeuvre. The part of the video you mentioned isn’t a great example of how to observe actually - we’d look around more than that ideally, even if it meant stopping the car for a moment if needed.
@seanmetters76706 жыл бұрын
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Good answer. And tx. for the honesty when you mentioned "that it probably wasn`t a great example". I ran that by my own instructor and he said exactly the same. That it`s a good idea to always look around .... NOT just check the blind spots once at the beginning then rely on mirrors. (I think people get mixed up (or don`t know at all) about the TRUE blind spot in a mirror..... and looking over your shoulder Thanks for clearing it up (and I WONT be doing the same [in that situation] now! : ) )

I lived in the US for almost 20 years. When I returned to the UK, I could not believe the number of drivers who nowadays see indicating as a sign of weakness - or just too inconvenient. Why has this happened?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 жыл бұрын
Who knows why they don’t bother indicating? I think people are just being lazy - perhaps they don’t realise how annoying it is for other drivers.
@AntPDC6 жыл бұрын
And dangerous. Have you noticed this too?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 жыл бұрын
Of course. If the lack of indication suggests they are going straight ahead, then another driver may pull away when it's not actually safe to do so. To stay safe, we always wait if we aren't sure - but it's really annoying when we see we waited for nothing because they didn't indicate. If only everyone was considerate to each other driving would be a lot safer and enjoyable!

I don't understand the British mentality about driving around parked vehicles. Signaling can very rarely be bad. However, the people behind us may not see what we have in front of us. Will we just suddenly move to the other lane? Furthermore, it can also help them by telling that there is a vehicle they will also have to avoid. We always have to indicate that we'll move in the other lane no matter how much of the car moves into it. P.S. Your videos are great, even though we have some things differently where I live.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool8 жыл бұрын
+TechnoBacon55 Yes, there are differences in regulations about this - for us in the U.K. signalling around parked cars is optional, so we can do it if we want to or if the situation needs it. Glad you like our videos!
@aztimms5 жыл бұрын
Approaching a parked car 2 options; 1 crash into it; 2 go around it. No one expecting you to take option 1!!! so signal is generally superfluous.

Great video! When overtaking a bus that’s at a bus stop, do we need to signal (when there isn’t a junction on the right)?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool4 жыл бұрын
We should indicate if it will help someone else - but it's OK not to if it won't. Consider that the road position of our car is another method of signalling what we are doing - and often that makes it clear what we intend to do. Have the driving test requirements changed since this video was posted because I have sometimes been asked whether a signal is necessary by my instructor and advised not to signal if nobody will benefit (when stopping or pulling away) because a signal deemed unnecessary can apparently be measured as a minor driving fault?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool5 жыл бұрын
No, the test requirements haven't changed. It is still true that we only need to indicate when someone else would benefit, but there is no fault given if we choose to indicate even when there isn't anyone around.
@csabapargariu1177 Жыл бұрын
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool the problem with the "someone would benefit" rule is that what if there is a danger you are not noticing? I know, you should be aware of your surrounding, etc, but signalling should be mandatory, end of. I really enjoy your videos, but to suggest you dont need to signal (at all??)to leave a mini roundabout is, in my eyes incorrect advice. There are many mini roundabout exits on various angles and often a signal would greatly benefit other vehicles coming on to the roundabout from the exit after yours. eg a 3 exit mini where following the rd ahead is at about 10 oclock ( assuming approach at 6 oclock). The traffic coming from 10 oclock turning right 2nd exit ( for them 2 oclock), will be looking at your car for a signal to come off, so they can proceed with some progress.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool7 жыл бұрын
+Graham Thanks for your comment. I take your point, but the exits are so close together on a mini-roundabout that there is probably only time for our indicators to flash once before we steer into our exit - which doesn’t really help anyone. However it is perfectly legal to indicate to leave, so if a driver thinks that it would be of benefit to others they are free to do so.
@Grahamvfr7 жыл бұрын
I fully understand the concept of mini roundabouts and the close proximity of each exit, my long winded post should have simply implied that at 5.55, the comment may have been more appropriate if it suggested..... We don't NORMALLY need to indicate to leave a mini roundabout. Love the videos!!
@craigbishop25296 жыл бұрын
Wording on this part of the video is poor. Treat it as a normal roundabout. It’s not the top of a t junction for a reason, that’s why there’s a roundabout there. There are still exits, therefore you indicate when you leave the roundabout.
@aztimms5 жыл бұрын
Not enough time to signal for subsequent exits at mini R/B's (traffic police advanced training endorses this view). You would of course signal left on approach for the 1st exit (even if it's straight on) & right for any subsequent exit more than halfway round - you don't however change to a left signal to leave, but maintain the right till clear of the mini R/B & in your new road. Straight on 2nd exit is no signals at all.

Thank you for this video. It’s very informative 😃 I would like to know, why is not important to indicate when we are going ahead, at a mini roundabout??
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 жыл бұрын
When leaving a mini-roundabout there would only be time for the indicators to flash once, so it wouldn't really help anyone else understand what we are doing - as we would have already left the junction by then!

Will you get a fault for signalling when moving off even when there are no cars/pedestrians? Would this be "unnecessary" signalling ?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool4 жыл бұрын
No, there will only be a fault for signalling if it is wrong or mis-timed and misleads someone.
@jd71682 жыл бұрын
May I ask why you say turning right is an ‘always signal’ scenario?. Good observation is a foundation of safe driving and where that observation confirms no other road users present, then no signal is necessary. The term ‘always use’ leads to automatic and unconscious actions and contributes to non focused driving. Not signalling automatically, but being ready to signal where the traffic situation changes, contributes significantly to continual driver awareness. Signalling to pass parked cars (with other traffic in the vicinity) helps promote the Take Use Give method and is also a confirmatory signal further reducing uncertainty. To maintain focused and aware driving, give a signal where it would benefit other road users.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool2 жыл бұрын
We indicate so anyone nearby can benefit - not just road users. If our signal helps a pedestrian understand that we are driving towards them and that they shouldn’t cross the road then that’s good. Of course we need to observe as well as we can, but we are happy to always signal at junctions just in case it helps someone that was out of our view previously.

My instructor said that you can steer way earlier but are you not supposed to treat it as if you have cars on Both sides of hence you’d have to steer much later to avoid hitting the cars. What’s better during an exam if the spaces next to me are free - should I just steer as nothings next to me or do the other thing ?

If the spaces beside you are free, then steer straight away, but when there is a car next to you wait until you are half way out of the bay. So in real life and on the test, just steer when it's safe.

Can someone let me know this: If I'm driving and I want to turn left into a side road (90 degree turning), I know I must signal. However, about a meter to the left of the turning (just before) there is another turning. Do I signal left before the first turning regardless of the fact that I'm turning into the second road and not the first. (The distance is so close, I honestly do not think it will make a difference to the driver behind me because the distance is hardly nothing). OR, do I wait till I'm next to it, bare in mind this will NOT leave me enough time to break softly and will result in a harsh braking. All answers appreciated :)
