If you don’t go off in the dirt and stick with the pavement….. having shaft drive is the way to go. I currently have the Tiger Explorer but will test driving the New V100 from Moto Guzzi. It’s lighter and has enough punch to get you going smartly down the road.

The used KTM 950 for few months and I do consider it one of the best off-road indeed , but the KTM has 21" front wheel which makes it ahead of'me all

1 of 2 Until moving to a different dealership that carries different brands, I was the shop foreman of one of the 20 largest BMW motorcycle dealerships in the USA. The percentage of modern BMW boxer owners affected by failed fuel pumps / stuck fuel injectors was more like 70% in the first 3 years of ownership. Some problems that are rare are blown out of proportion but fuel pump and injectors are not among them. These problems are TERRIBLE.

Make sure to bring 2 extra fuel pumps and 6 extra fuel injectors since BMW can't deal with ethanol in the fuel, then pack along another rear ESA shock for when the stock one pisses out all of it's hydraulic fluid. The R1200GS is a fine machine but it's reliability would be at the bottom of this crowd. For touring or long distance riding, reliability is pretty important to me.

The reason i mention suspension travel, is the first time you hit a hard bump, or even a small jump, if those 1200's bottom out, which they will weighing what they do, your going to hurt yourself and the bike. The smaller bikes have further suspension travel and wont bottom out as easy. The CC's mean nothing in the dirt. In actuality a 250 honda dirt bike would get around better. But adventure riding is about doing BOTH.

I was thinking the same thing...I wonder if there was a price bracket for the review? Or perhaps, because everyone knows BMW is top, they wanted to show others? It is strange that they didn't mention the #1 competitor.

Thank you, and once again, being you are in the UK and the UK mandates a reasonable quantity of corrosion inhibitors AND tests fuel at stations for quality, you will likely never have a problem. To those less fortunate who are in a place with poor quality oxygenated fuel and out of warranty or warranty was refused, a fuel pump isn't complex or exclusive. Take your bike to an independent shop with smart techs and have your crapy lower end bosch pump replaced with a Denso, Marelli or Weber pump.

Yeah, except with the multi-strada touring S you can't go long distance because A. the luggage capacity is lower than the other three, and B. The bike will break down and need a dealer fix long before you get anywhere far. Everybody I've even heard of (not even anybody I know, haven't even HEARD OF) who had the hypermotard or the multistrada has been at the dealership for A FEW **MAJOR** things in the first 1000 miles. Maybe somebody will respond to this and say they've heard of one, but I have not. Long story ...not so short: - I'd go Ducati if I wanted a daily commuter (assuming I had a job who didn't mind if I was late one day b/c the bike broke down), for 25-50-75 miles I'd go Ducati, sporty, light, nimble, easy to get through traffic and the like, but not something (even if it was perfectly reliable) that really has the cargo capacity of the other three - I can't even imagine the multistrada 2-up with full luggage. - I think the tiger explorer has the best engine per-se, that 1200 triple just checks all the boxes, quite nice, I think if I was going to buy one that would be it. It's a very capable bike both off-road and on-road. - I'm biased against the super tenere simply b/c it just doesn't get me excited despite it being a pretty awesome bike, so I can't give a fair word there. - As for the Stelvio, every review I've seen about this (long term owners review) says they're rock solid reliable, except for the chain tensioner follower recall or whatever on the '09's, but except for that small hiccup I've heard they're bullet-proof, which really surprised me as it's a smaller italian company which can't really afford the QA as the big Jap 4 or HD or w.e. For long trips, I wouldn't get the Ducati, even if it was reliable, and I wouldn't get the super tenere either b/c as I mentioned, it doesn't excite me. So that would leave the tiger explorer and the stelvio as a long distance adventure "go over anything" motorcycle. Both are pretty easy to work on & cheap to maintain, both have awesome reliability, both are heavy as bricks, both probably are probably pretty terrible in traffic/lane splitting/etc., both carry lots of cargo, both can do 2-up pretty well. I can't really think of a good reason for the stelvio over the tiger or vice versa. This year (or beginning of next) I'm going to buy a new adv biker (most likely this tiger explorer 1200) but in the past week I've looked into the Stelvio more in-depth and now I'm quite torn.

2 of 2 That said, it is a crapy USA gas with loads of ethanol and not enough corrosion inhibitors. BUT..... The brand I am service manager for now uses fuel pumps and injectors that hold up to the USA's bad gas so it can be done and for the stated purpose of the R1200GS sure as hell should be done. Being that you are in the UK you are much less likely to ever have these issues. The R1200GS/A is a great bike but not reliable in the USA or many 3rd world locations.

Its just funny to see all these 1200 fans and when you look it up, unless your driving on packed dirt roads, or fire trails, you might as well leave that touring machine at home. Not to many people spend the 21k on a 1200 gs A + after all the accessories and take it off road anyways. The big bike off roading scene is really not there. Its just not fee-sable. If your a 50-50 off roader, get a smaller motor bike generally around 800cc's if your hardily off roading, get a 1200.

And all you have to do is go to their respected web pages and look up the suspension travel. KTM is the winner hands down with their 990, but people are tired of hearing about that so they make videos about the "other" competitors. BMW 1200 sucks. It is a tank and an awesome touring machine, but for off road its sub par, like the ducati. If you go to BMW's smaller motor bikes, the 800 and 650 you have a much better off roading bike, and superb road handling.

So do yourself a favor, if your a desk jocky that wants an adventure bike so he an brag about the time he drove on the grass once or twice showing off in front of his buddies, these bikes are for you because you'd probably think bigger the motor better the bike as well. But if you REALLY want to go on an adventure ride, out into no where and be able to commute daily, look somewhere else. These big girls just are not up to par. KTM 990, BMW F800GS, Triumph Tiger 800XC are the better all arounders

I agree with the BS Ducati paying to market their junk ... it is stupid to put superbike engine on an adventure. It is also stupid to give the win for a bike has 17" wheel on the front. Also, adventure bike should reduce electrical control gimmiks to avoid falts and errors , I would seriously give the multistrada last place period.
