What was the meaning of the journey through the 3 part mind maze of Mars? Hopefully this analytical review will help you find the answers! The “Temple of Mars” was superficially an episode about Finn and Jermaine retrieving Jake, but its core was all about the character arcs of Betty and King Man (formerly Normal Man, even more formerly Magic Man).

Frogs are previously associated with Ice King and Simon (e.g. Ice King was having a frog funeral when we first meet him, Ice King has a little frog on his keyboard in "prisoners of love", another one in his picnic basket in "The Eyes", Simon has one in his backpack when he first meets Marceline). Marcy herself has a decent amount of frog iconography around her. I really like your analysis of it representing metamorphosis and accepting change.

In my opinion, the frogs in the pond represent grief and/or sorrow. Betty expressed guilt over not being able to save Simon, while Finn expresses Guilt over Fern. This scene is actually really powerful when you think about it. For over a month, Finn was beating himself up over accidentally killing Fern, which was both his friend and himself. He couldn't even bring himself to kill monsters, which showed how messed up he was from it. Remember Finn's quote the episode 'The Enchiridion!'? "I'll slay anything that's evil, that's my deal!" If Finn can't even do that, then he's in a very bad state of mind. ...And yet, Betty's grief and sorrow, represented by the frogs, overshadow Finn's immense guilt one hundred fold. It shows how much Betty is obsessed with saving Simon, and I can't help but feel bad for her.

I personally disagree that Jermaine doesn't have any hangups I mean I interpreted that line as he feels left out constantly by Jake and Finn he wants to be a part of their lives but they constantly seem to forget he exists and he realizes that and that's one of his biggest issues, he kinda has the opposite problem of Betty she can't let go of Simon but he can't even become part of their lives

The blackboard has a bunch of Magic the Gathering terms, so that's fun. Regarding the temple, I don't think the characters "got" the message at all; I think the idea of the whole test is that sometimes you have to let go, move on and just ignore some things (hence, don't look at the frog). The interesting thing about these, though, is that the characters totally did it wrong and learned the wrong lessons. You were supposed to ignore the frogs, they aggro'd them all and just forced their way through with physical prowess (speed). Then, they were supposed to smash the unsolvable equation rather than be consumed by it, but rather than accept that it was unsolvable they accidentally broke through whilst trying to remove obstacles in the way of solving it (Finn climbing after the Ice Thing). In the third challenge, Betty was supposed to realize that she'd be happier if she took care of herself but instead she takes care of someone else (past-her) with the mindset of "eh, maybe I'd have been happier if I'd never met Simon but I did and that's who I am now. So I can rescue past me but now-me really needs to double down and apply the lessons from the last two lessons." Its a really clever subversion of the "trials-that-actually-teach-you-about-yourself" trope.

I worry that the writers wrote themselves into a corner with this ending. One of two things can now happen: Betty's plan succeeds and the show will undercut its own meaningful message of coping with loss. Or Betty's plan will fail and she will be forced to accept her loss, which will just be a repetition of Temple of Mars and therefore no longer as profound a conclusion. But of course, Adventure Time writers are amazing and deep down I know they've come up with something that will feel both surprising and meaningful. I hope...

themarquess the second option does help to prove a point that sometimes it takes a few metaphorical slaps in the face before someone gets it. It would kinda undercut and be a rehash of Temple of Mars BUT it would make her seem more human than ever.

I don't think having Betty succeed would undercut the message of coping with loss, I think the message of this episode is that you need to find a balance between not giving up and giving up. Betty passed the final trial because she knew that letting Simon go would save her past self of the pain and madness she went through; she was able to analyse the situation and decided that in this scenario giving up would be the best option. Even still, seeing Finns determination inspired her, I think she was able to understand that not giving up doesn't have to be a bad or obsessive thing. Betty's issue was her obsessiveness causing her to do outrageous things that harmed others and even the one she loved, but as long as she doesn't revert to that obsessiveness, I don't think there is an issue with her saving Simon. Or even if she fails, we could finally see her accepting that he's truly gone and showing that her obsessive nature didn't take over.

Honestly, coming from someone who’s been able to look at the correct choice and subsequently make the wrong choice, I think it would still be meaningful should she fail. It goes to show how hard headed people can be and how easy it is to fixate when you’ve lost your sense of self.

I think the direction they'll go with it is having Betty's final plan go so overboard that it nearly causes some extreme catastrophe on a cosmic level. I think to have it go to such a severe length will break her down in some way.

I feel that Betty and Normal Man are gonna find a way to get what they want, but accidentally releasing GOLB in the process. Then GOLB interrupts the Gum War, then Betty uses what she learned to save Simon, then Simon is gonna help find a way to stop GOLB. Also, are you gonna do a analysis on the series finale trailer?

Magic Man's journey is by far one of my favorites throughout the show. He developed so much, but at the same time he seems to not have changed all that much. He's a great character, and i really, REALLY hope he can have his happy ending. Betty was great in this episode as well, but as long as i like her, i fear for her, and consequently, for the Ice King. I was looking up at the fandom's opinions for how they want them to end, and 90% seems to want her to "fix" the Ice King and be together. But honestly, what is there to fix on him? People seem to not understand yet that the Ice King and Simon, they're two different people! If the Ice King stays as the Ice King, the Simon Betty is trying to bring back will never return, therefore she doesn't get to have her happy ending. But if she does "fix" him, and bring Simon back, we lose the Ice King forever. And none of us want that to happen. But it's the only possibility i find it mostly likely to be happening, to be honest.

Also, at this point of the series, I like Ice King much more, just see how good he was in Blenanas. I'm kinda starting to get tired of that "I hope Simon got cured" shit. You're right, the Ice King and Simon are two different people. However my argument is that Simon is the original, his mind was altered which is the only reason as to why the Ice King is able to exist. The Ice King is a cool guy (no pun intended) but does he have the moral right to take over Simons body, especially when there are still people that love and care about Simon? It doesn't seem fair that Simon should have to give up his mind for another person. The Ice Crown is essentially a mental illness that makes the user forget their past life and forces you to behave in a certain way, and just because the symptoms of that illness makes you into a pretty likeable guy, doesn't mean it shouldn't be cured.

Due to some messed up episode ordering on CN's part, I wound up seeing Temple of Mars before Jake the Starchild. However, I think this sort of improved my experience, as hearing about Jake running out of Birthday cake and cocktail hotdogs was pretty funny without context.

I think that "King" Man and Magic Betty are very similar characters. Magic Man was inflicted with magic, madness and sadness, but was able to escape the torture and become a good individual. Betty was once a good individual, but has now descended into madness. They're both still fixed on a loved one from their past, and our constantly scheming ways to get them back. This is just an observation.

I think the ice thing symbolizes betys view of ice king. He messes with her plans because he is a real person who can make his own choices. She feels like she can fix everything with a plan but there is nothing to fix.

This one is probably my second favorite of the bunch. It was a mostly Betty-centric episode, but seeing Jermaine was also a nice addition because he rarely shows up even though he is the other sibling of Finn and Jake. The episode introduced some fascinating implications with the mind illusions in the temple, particularly the Ice Thing and what it could mean for Simon's fate. Also, we finally got some set up for Golb, which is good. Interestingly enough, Normal Man, now king Man, seems to have retained some of Magic Man's bad personality traits unfortunately. I guess old habits die hard, but this is to be expected. Just because Magic Man transferred his magic and insanity to Betty doesn't mean that he's suddenly going to be a completely different person with absolutely no remnants of his old self. His MMS may be gone, but what drove him to his MMS in the first place is still there, which is his grief towards the loss of Margles. I don't really have much else to say about this episode that hasn't already been said by other people.

This episode has one of my favorite easter eggs which is in the math challenge many of the variables are written either directly as or very closely to the three color shards and wedges in Magic the Gathering e.g. grixis, naya sultai jund, etc. I have always loved adventure time, and knowing there are magic nerds in the animation staff makes me love it even more.

I think the awful state of Finn's hair might actually be a reflection of how bad he's had it emotionally while Jake is gone- a common issue when dealing with grief/sadness/depression can be an inability to maintain proper hygiene in some aspects, hence the lice infestation. Sometimes it's difficult to take care of yourself under emotional distress, even if you're staying calm. Sometimes especially then. That, and we already know barbershop therapy is a ritual of theirs.

I think Betty's character arc will end with Golb erasing Betty from existence when she disturbs him with her attempts of rescuing Simon/Margles. Not only will it show off how supremely powerful Golb is, but it'll show a tragic end for someone who was too determined for her own good...

I feel like if Simon were in Betty's shoes, he would have had a similar experience. Ice king aside Simon's entire character arc is focused on his relationship with Betty. Of course I am excluding Marcelline because I would put her past with Simon into Marcelline's character arc. In "Betty" and "Broke His Crown" The two episodes where we see Simon in the present, he is dead set on Betty, ignoring everything else. If we do see Simon and Betty in the four part finale, which is fairly likely to happen, it may be both of them moving on from eachother.

I think the lesson isn't that you should move on. It's more so about the dichotomy between trying harder and giving up/moving on. Betty was inspired by how relentless Finn was in the mind maze in pursuit of saving Jake. That was the first thing she saw in there, not the hypothetical lessons about moving on. She saw that strong relentless action produces results, not giving up on something. So while the meaning of the maze and perhaps the episode is partially about acceptance and moving on, the episode has a double meaning between these two approaches.

I liked this episode quite a bit, and it was nice to get some foreshadowing for GOLB before his inevitable appearance in the finale. At this point, I have no idea how Ice King and Betty's story will turn out, but it looks like it will be one of the major focal points of the finale. I'm really interested to see how they manage to tie them and GOLB in with the Great Gum War.

I feel that in the final episode, half of it will be the gumwar and the next half would be a fight with GOLB. The way I think it'll transition is that PB wins the war, everyone thinks everything is fine until Finn sees Jake acting weird and that Jake isn't there. He was some sort of hallucination by GOLB and that GOLB captured Jake from the unknown planet.

I think there are two ways to end the Ice King arc on a note that will make the most of sense. 1. The Ice King returns to Simon, but along with that, he dies, alone or along with Betty. 2. Betty or Golb will be able to split The Ice King in both Simon and The Ice King. That way the existance of Ice King as a person will still be fully acknowledged.

Maybe, with the crowns development and the fact that it has been with Simon for centuries, the Ice King’s death may cause the crown to go into grieving, but instead of causing a new ice age, it instead takes a form similar to the Ice King? I have another theory, though. What if Betty meddling with GOLB causes GOLB to try to enter Ooo? He may need a vessel, alike the Lich, and thus uses Ice King, but buffs him up so he is more ‘suitable’? When they inevitably rid him from the Ice Kings body, Ice King may already be so far gone that he is stuck like that forever, losing what remains of his sanity? Idk though that may be *very* inaccurate as to what is going to happen

Hold on, I just had a thought. What if that Ice Thing is what is source of Ice King's madness. Maybe it wasn't just a metaphorical cause of change but also a literal one. It's definitely linked to the ice crown since this they're both missing the same gem. We know it's a real physical thing as well, since it was seen to be in Ooo in "1000+ Graybles." So why else would it appear in the trial unless it was related specifically to being what changes the Simon and other users of the Ice Crown. My thought is that Evergreen created this curse right before he died to be linked to the Ice Crown, as a way of deterring people from using the crown. That's probably why nothing Betty was doing was working since she wasn't stopping the source of the madness. The only thing I'm not sure about is why it was chasing the gem in 1000+ Graybles and why the gem was even avoiding it in the first place.

I’m really not over the fact that there’s only one mega episode left of this show. I grew up with this story. It’s my comfort place. No matter how bad I’m feeling Adventure Time gets me grounded. And I’m happy that it’ll always be there, but it feels strange that it’ll be finite soon

I love how much character development Ice King has gone through throughout the show and that now in the 10th season we don't think of him as an evil villain anymore, now we think of him as a fully fleshed character. But something that confuses me is why does that crown creature have Ice Kings voice and why is one of its gems missing. Maybe its the Ice King separated from Simon and maybe in the finale Simon will be separated from the crown or Simon will just eventually become that creature.

I know it's abit late to write a comment, but here goes: There is also another symbolism that could have been the inspiration for the frog room - in Jewish tale of Egypt there were the ten curses that god placed on the pheroh, the second curse being the rain of frogs. The curses were placed on the pheroh everytime he 'toughened his heart' and didn't let the sons of juda go, hence the reason for the connection.

(Sorry for the wall of text.) Betty changed a zero to an eight. In numerology "8" is the number of power, while "0" is a rarity at all and an impossibility for a base. Meaning that while we would think of it as nothing, that's actually not possible, and is in fact one of the few intensifiers. Physically, the numerals look similar, making their only difference being a metaphysical squeeze. And also another egg.

I prey that in the great gun war episodes it shows uncle gumbald beating princess bubblegum with technology, the he would say something along the lines of " there is nothing you can do that I can't do better" and then princess bubblegum gets angry and shoots a mint soda explosion right at his face and defeats him, that would be a great ending for her character arc, embracing her powers instead of hiding them.
