Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review - S1E6 - The Winter King

The Winter King was a frosty wad for 100 years until his reign was ended by a magic-draining kiss from Fionna that turned him into dust. Simon Petrikov is vindicated, and all is well. Except that Simon still thinks he can get cursed the correct way, and Fionna is only just starting to realize the tragedy that has followed the group’s wake as they hop across worlds. Episode 6 of Fionna & Cake still leaves our central cast on the backburner, but it was a delightful romp through the snow with the Winter King and a sweet dulcet chorus of sugary goodness with the Candy Queen (the song "Baked With Love" is gonna be stuck in my head). Oh, and it was very charming to see Marshall Lee finally hook up with Gary Prince!

My personal theory about Ice Marcy is that this Simon failed to protect her, leading to a downward spiral in his empathy, allowing him to make this decision to pawn off the insanity to PB instead of dealing with it himself.

That's my theory as well. It also seems like PB awakened her elemental powers earlier in this timeline, so her life must have gone a bit differently. Perhaps never meeting Marceline was that difference. Also also this world seems to lack a finn and jake so maybe here Marceline couldn't save the humans leading to no Finn in this timeline

Perhaps the reason Finn does not exist in this dimension is because, not being protected by Marceline (since there is a theory that perhaps she died as a teenager after receiving Hounson's bass), the humans (Finn's descendant) do not They survived the vampires, and where Jake \○.○/ Who knows.

I was delighted overall by how very "Marceline" Marshall Lee is. Like he has all the little Marcy-isms that I was happy to see again. The way he uses the word "boys" instead of "things" the way he dips his pinky in the cocoa powder, the way he poses the way she does when she floats, but he can't float so he's just on the dirty ground.

A really interesting interpretation I've seen on a comment was how this series further builds on the crown as an allegory for drug addiction. Much like many people who recovered from it, Simon feels insulted when people tell him he was much more fun and outgoing back then, even though Simon couldn't even remember his life and lived with delusions, sadness and chaos. But because of those delusions, Simon also partially misses being the Ice King, since it would mean he wouldn't have to remember his anguish and pain anymore, just like many people with depression drown their sorrows. Then, Simon meets the Winter King, who looks like the perfect functional addict. He has all the benefits of the magic, such as feeling powerful and sure of himself, without the mental and physical problems that come with that addiction. He seemingly uses his magic for good, just like many people that believe they get more creative and artful under the influence of substances and think that they can create wonder with it. But then, it is revealed that the Winter King was simply hiding all of those bad effects of the crown beneath the surface, and he was in truth more broken and harmful than the Ice King had ever been.

I really like this, because it also ties into the big reveal. The winter king says that he just used willpower to get over his insanity, and that echoes the nonsense people try to talk about just say noz just quit, all that BS about addiction and mental health that's so stigmatizing. Then it turns out he's actually forcing his insanity on someone else, which is kinda like someone trying to make themselves feel better by making someone else feel bad, or getting someone else addicted to a substance so you're not in it alone. You might look better by comparison but (to mix a metaphor) when you look behind the curtain, the mess is still there, no matter how well you function.

I had similar thoughts as well, especially since the winter king at several points emphasizes that he did that “through sheer force of will” and how easy it was to “just “manifest your own reality. it’s like telling a depressed person to “just be happy”. That it comes from a literally comparable Simon, makes this all the more devastating to our Simon. 0:01

I find it really interesting how the Winter King sees himself as a "Simon with powers" so to say, when he's clearly not that. He's not a Simon who has gained powers, he's an Ice King who has lost his madness. And I wonder if this is the reason he doesn't care about Betty at all, and why his personality is so different from Simon. We know the Ice King's madness is deeply intertwined with Simon's love for Betty, manifesting in his obsession of princesses. I wonder if the reason Winter King feels nothing for Betty is due to unintended consecuences from his spell, where his love for her got ripped out with his madness since they're so closely related. It would explain his complete lack of care for her, and his personality differences, since he's not a magical Simon, he's a sane Ice King who got his love for Betty removed too, leaving this wacky character who is technically sane.

@hectorrajadosanchez some holes in your theory are that he calls himself simon, and does share simons memory, he could just be a simon who is meant to show a darker version of simon, he could just not care about betty cause been sane for a 100 years and was never in a near death situation which made him want to reach out to betty, and his not loving betty could just be his coping mechanism , just forgetting about it all and love can fade with time. the candy queen kidnapping him could just be bubblegum's way of trying to end the spell, trying to steer the madness to the winter king till the candy queen eventually mercs him by accident or on purpose, after all the ice king did almost kill off bubblegum a few times.

Its hard to belive that the Ice King was sane enough to think of this plan or even realize his curse to begin with. Would of made more sense that this was a result of Betty trying to save Simon that went horribly wrong but in a different way than in the main timeline.

That would also be a neat alternate twist. I have to assume Ice King wasn't fully aware of the scope of the ritual that he somehow gained the knowledge to perform. Would be in character for him to not even understand the repercussions correctly, or for something to go haywire when his focus was off (like Simon in this series).

I'd assumed it was a Bellanoche situation where the crown lost its power for a bit. Only in this world, instead of trying to contact Betty, he figured out how to transfer the curse and keep himself alive

If he's to be believed he mentioned that through sheer force of will he was able to control the crown. Not too sure what events could've transpired 100 years ago that allowed WK to control the crown... Perhaps the Winter King got his hands on the Enchiridion and made a Prismo wish? Or maybe he was able to reset the crown itself to use it's Wish magic? I don't think we'll ever get a straight answer but definitely fun to speculate over!

Fionna having a crush on the ice king and ice king-equivalents is actually something that's a part of the original fanfics, as IK always over-wrote Fionna into having a crush on him, and I think it's a really smart use of a previously inocuous factoid.

I think when Simon says he's gonna be "cursed the right way" he might be mostly putting on a front for Fionna. After all, he was literally just shown that the ice crown's curse is inescapable, and that he will eventually sink back into that madness. I think it actually has a lot of parallels to when Simon put on the crown to protect Marcy, telling her that everything will be fine when really he knows that he's dooming himself in the process

I was devastated with the reveal of the crown's curse being in PB. Because for one second i thought there could be a happy ending for both ends with Simon being sane and Fionna's world being magical, but looks like there will always be madness in the crown.

I find it funny how in the OG Fionna and Cake episodes the Ice King would self insert himself into the stories making Fionna have a crush on him and now we reach a point were Fionna kissed an alternative version of the Ice King. Also theres the fact that the current objective is to curse Simon again which would lead to the Ice King meeting Fionna and Cake which is what he always wanted

I think the thing that makes Winter King's power over the crown a bit more terrifying is his almost full dominion over wish magic. Maybe not the extent of Prismo or the crown in its most pure unworn state, but being able to do so much at will that goes beyond ice sculptures had broad implications for me.

"When you get this new crown you can use it to make an Ice Betty... haha, that would be unethical" This was the first major slip of WK's mask and it gave me (wait for it) CHILLS. I like to think that the thing keeping WK Simon relatively sane was Marcy during their journey together. Unlike our Simon, this one cared less for Betty, but far more for Marceline. Maybe he even killed Betty 1000 years ago when he first put on the crown? But perhaps sometime during Simon and Marcy's journeys together, WK-Simon failed to protect Marcy turning him into full chaos mode. Marcy wouldn't have been around to fight the vampires and the humans would be wiped out, meaning no Finn. I'm thinking the guilt of losing Marceline was what drove Winter King to curse PB so he could recreate the world in an ordered winter paradise and have his Marcy back... which he knows is unethical, but just can't help himself. He'd rather live in an illusion than face reality which I also think could be the beginning of a wake up call for our Simon. I definitely agree with you that Ice-Marcy is a manifestation of WK's guilt, and he recreated her in the state in which he felt the most protective of her. I love that this episode finally has Fiona come to terms with her violent nature much like how Finn had to grow from solving everything with violence to only using violence when necessary. Knowing when to keep your sword sheathed is just as important as knowing how to use it if she is ever to become a true hero :3 I love your breakdowns of these F&C episodes just like all your previous AT breakdowns! You are so fun to watch and I always look forward to your analysis vids!

But the positive side effect of that being a possibility is...that it allows them to experience all the different magical and unique worlds they want, without having Simon become cursed and essentially resetting everyone's lives there to make that version of Ooo magic again.

If I remember correctly, the plot thread of the Lich's hand being spread across the multiverse was never resolved. So pull a twist where, at the end of the season, Prismo's boss steps in to handle the Fionna & Cake situation, but instead of killing them, agrees to let them earn their existence by wiping out the Lich hands dotted across the multiverse. Also, I just really really want a second season of this show. Ten episodes isn't enough.

I noticed something about the winter king. He has completely straight teeth, whereas even normal human characters have round ones. Not only that, but ice king is always drawn with fangs, and that’s how winter king appears for a moment near the end of the episode when he’s telling Fionna to attack candy queen

My interpretation of Ice Marcy is that in this time line, he failed to protect her, either from the other dangers off Ooo or himself. She died or fled and he thought she was dead, and this double combo of Marcy And Betty pushed him over into this new less conscientious personality, he seems somewhat self aware, in that he tells Simon that an ice Betty would be unethical, but this doesn’t seem to have stopped him doing it anyway with Marcy (implying Betty’s adult personality was too much to control? Or that his own desires came first irt ‘protecting’ Marcy but not Betty? Unsure, but he does Know he shouldn’t be doing it.) i do find it interesting that he seemed to move past Betty but not Marcy, and I wonder if that will be foreshadowing Simon letting Betty and his feelings for her go, but not going full Ice King and abandoning his memories for Marceline as well. Edit: someone else pointed out that WK isn’t a magical Simon, he’s a sane Ice King, his madness (and his love for Betty by extension) was stripped away and that’s why CQ is mad And obsessed with him, and why he forgets Betty but not Marcy.

assuming marcy wasn't murdered or anything and just replaced with a docile ice version that likes the winter king she wouldve had to wintness the mental decline not only of simon but also her girlfriend. if loosing simon to magic dimentia and breaking up with bonny was enough to make her as messed up as she was in season one id imagine then also losing bonny and having simon turn out to be a huge wad would send her spiraling even thurther into depression and apathy. plus he took her bass!

Considering that Ice-marcie was still a child in that universe makes me believe that Marcie was indeed recreated by the Winter King. Time does seem to flow in the alternate universes as we found out from the prior episodes. So Marcie still being a child makes zero sense. Simon’s arc throughout the miniseries is so unexpectedly disturbing. At first he was desperate, trying to recover Betty in the ritual. Then he was defeated and depressed. Only the fear of annihilating a whole universe kept him going. Now his plan to become Ice King essentially allows him to do both: end himself and save Fionna’s universe.

I’m a firm believer that Ice Marcy & “the dead one” Betty was the subtle origin of the Winter King. We know most likely that everything went similarly to our Ooo at least to the point Marcie attained her Bass! BUT the part that stuck out to me is that referring to Betty that way would signify that she was dead much longer than she was alive to him. Which could definitely mean that they never did the ritual with Hambo to get her into Ooo and save her so she died long ago. And without hambo being accessible that would lead to the probability that Marcie died after Simon left her, during or after she was with her dad. (resulting in no humans or more specifically no finn) Therefore like others stated Simon was left with nothing but the memory of abandoning baby Marcie and a long dead betty. blaming himself & falling to his apathetic nature (as seen in Wishmaster) and deciding to find another way to survive (crazy bonnie) rather than withering away in sacrifice as The Ice King. until we have more confirmation that’s my head cannon/ most likely scenario. Butterfly effect if you will !!

Its so interesting that you go Patience vibes, because my theory is that this is what happens when none of Simon bubbles up through the crown. The crown's magic turns to user into original Gunter's idea of Evergreen, a brilliant technically minded saviour of the world, but also one that prioritises self preservation above all else, and is indifferent to harm done to others to get what he wants. I think our read was similar, because Patience and Evergreen are the same soul reincarnated. The Winter King is less Simon than ever. Perhaps Marceline (or betty) wished the crown didnt make Simon crazy, and so the world we see is one where none of Simons morals and trauma leak through. Ironic then, that (per my headcannon) this led to him killing Finn, Jake and Marcy when they tried to save PB.

The fact that Bonnie want to blend with ice King could mean 2 things : Deepdown PB always wante to feel a unity like the mother Gum , so the fact she try to blend to someone with love is not surprising .... the other tehory is that deepdown she know he is responsible for the madness .

The Ice Prince is how the Ice King saw himself, possible how Simon remembers being the Ice King in his current depressed state. Since Fionna is living in Simon's head and is the centrepiece of her world, their subconscious are connected.

I actually enjoyed the animation when it came to the Winter King’s musical number it gave off a story book vibe. But Candy Queen she’s traumatized me and I can never unsee the Banana Guards an their terrifying smiles of pure agonizing pain. Dear lord this Alternate Version of Simon was just an pun not intended ice cold for transferring the Curse of the Crown to PB!

I had the theory that Marcy found out about Simon projecting the madness onto PB, and took serious problem with it considering PB was her ex and a close friend despite the falling out, cutting ties with Simon altogether. So he recreated her when she was younger, and when she liked him despite his flaws. There are definitely holes in the theory, I just thought it was an interesting idea that added to Winter King's total wad status.

That shot of Ice Marcy gave me strong Lemonhope vibes. Overall I thought it was interesting how this world sort of mixed together all the traits of Ice King, PB and also Lemongrab, and then distilled them into two different characters. It made for a very unique dynamic.

0:10 i dont think the crown was drained from a "heightened emotional state" but rather prolonged contact, the same thing happened with cat and the hotdog. They have a bit of Golb properties with them, so little that its nullifying effects only work with skin contact after a certain period of time.

One thing I find interesting to consider is how the curse got transferred onto PB in the first place, given that WK was seemingly fully mad before it happened, and so wouldn't have been in any kind of state to make it happen intentionally. As a personal headcanon that maximizes the drama, what if Marceline enlisted PB's help in trying to science the madness curse out of the crown, only for it to go sideways and rebound onto PB.

​ @avosmash2121 A character I love is Reinhard form Re:Zero, though he doesn't really fit the bill on the vain part. he's like super humble to the point of almost being a liar, though he's always one to keep his oath. I wouldn't like him as a main character, but I think that's sort of the idea. He's meant to be this idealized hero who's unendingly humble, kind, and capable, while the main character is clunky, weak, and vain and fails to save anyone through his own efforts, until he starts the long march to become something more. disregarding my off topic rant about this show/novel I love, I guess what I'm looking for is a character that's better than everyone else and knows they are, and aren't ever proven wrong. Like where the point is, at the end of the day, that the power or skill they value so much isn't what truly matters. I see a lot of shows that prove high and mighty characters wrong by beating them in their own game, but that just plays into the idea that the game is what matters. That beating them is a meaningful course of action instead of a petty vengeance tactic meant to play to peoples ego. I like a story that flips the script and lets the bad guy win when the stakes are stroking the winners ego. Humble the winner by showing them their ideals aren't fulfilling, not by showing them that they're weak. That's not really what I was getting at with the original comment either, was it... Okay a confident, kind, vain character, in my eyes, is someone who's better than everyone else, they know they're better than everyone else, and even if they reign it over people every now and then, they're good people otherwise. I guess you don't have to be strong to capable to fit the category, but that falls more into a delusional character, played for laughs, Like Yamcha from Dragon Ball. I guess I'm looking for a character who's main flaw is their vanity, but they're never proven to be in the wrong about their capabilities, so they never find themselves in a position to be humbled. Personally, that sounds like it might be a fun character on some level. Like if you just wanted an interesting character or you wanted some sort of arc where they are humbled through not finding fulfillment in placing so much importance in their abilities. I don't know. There's my overly verbose meaningless rant. Thank you very much if you made it to the end.

i think something really interesting that you didn't touch on was the winter king's relationship with his betty ! what happened there exactly? why does he not remember them being so close like our simon and betty? i personally feel like it's something along the lines of it was easier for him to cope if he just doesn't remember the bond they had so that the tragedy of not being able to be together doesn't weigh down on him.

Perhaps the lich cameos are related that every version of OOO got a mushroom bomb event, that created their own lich, like every version got a Finn and a Jake of their choice, based on the wishes of the previous people who got into prismo's time room. Plus, there's also the part that every dimension has a Lich Hand, so there's isn't just one, but 2 evil beings just waiting for the moment to strike, like the prime Lich did

One thing is that Fionna and Cake don't *just* drain magic but rather they turn things normal, in the previous episode there's a subtle event where Fionna takes a cool survival knife and then later during the fight near the end Fionna attempts to pull out said knife only to find it turned into a regular table knife

I think the appearances of the Lich just serve to keep continuity in the “Every universe now has a Lich” sense. Like he’s just there to show that’s still true

I keep thinking about the Want vs Need dichotomy of character arcs with this episode. So far we know that Simon wants to become the Ice King again because he thinks it'll protect Fionna and Cake's universe, and he also wants to be mad and delirious instead of sad and depressed again. And it's pretty transparent now that he will eventually come to realize he doesn't want that, and he actually needs something else (namely getting over his grief and finding a place for himself). Plus their plan wouldn't even work. Let's say they succeed and he's Ice King again, and Fionna and Cake are returned to their universe in his mind. But how can he be so sure that Ice King would have enough sanity to know to fight Scarab, or even be able to be successful against Scarab? If Ice King gets captured by Scarab, then the Fionnaverse is toast regardless. It's pretty clear that they're going to need a different way to save Fionnaverse rather than having Simon get "cursed the right way" as he put it. But this also brings me to think about Fionna and Cake's want for their world to become magical again. I was wondering why there was the Gary and Marshall meet cute B-plot, but after talking it over with friends, it might be to hint at the fact that not everyone in the Normal Fionnaverse may want magic back in their universe. Perhaps Gary and/or Marshall prefer their normal universe over their previously magical one, or someone else will. And this may cause Fionna to question whether or not she truly wants magic back in her universe or if she needs something else.

@TrojanTeapot it could take a while for simon to turn back into the ice king fully and could stop the Scarab before that point. and what about cake? in that universe she would just go back to be at best a voiceless cat and at worse experience a worst version of the dum dum juice.

Even if Scarab got frozen or killed off, it would only be a temporary solution since it would only be a matter of time before his boss or the higher ups notice that he's missing and that Prismo's violation of creating an unauthorized universe is still on record.

That one scene from the second episode where Simon and Marcy talk about what they would do without each other makes me think that this world's Simon failed to protect Merceline during the nuclear apocalypse, especially if that fan theory that the vampire universe shown in the trailers is one where Marcy never met Simon, so we would have two episodes where it is shown what they would be like without each other. There's also that part from the start of the Winter Wonder World song where Simon and Marcy were cornered by the mutants, along with the fact that the Winter King's response to losing a loved one is to make an ice duplicate. Who knows? Maybe the pain of losing a child was what broke this Simon in the end. He did seem pretty angry as the Ice King before transfering his madness to the PB. Either way, if the WK killed Marcy himself or Iceline is just a clone and the real Marcy is alive and well or baby Marcy died before her time, I really like how the episode gave all these little hints for us to think about, since we'll probably never see that universe again.

This might be pretty basic, but it seems to me like the character arc is moving such that Fionna will have a Wizard of Oz style realization that her perceived lack of agency in her world isn't something to be remedied with escapism, that she has everything she needs to live a magical and wonderful life even without magic and wonder.

I absolutely loved how Simon treated and interacted with the candy queen, there was a caring and understanding in his looks and faint smiles that really made you feel like he understood her or at the very least he saw himself and how others saw him pre-magic woman.

Some things that called my attention on this episode: -Gary's candy citizens aren't the genderbend versions we see usually, they're the versions Princess Bubblegum created not Prince Gumball. -For some reason, when Simon got normal-fied Gary and Marshall's backstories changed so they never knew each other despite having history as shown on some of their appearences on AT -Candy Queen's song says she wants to blend herself to the Simons and Idk that just gives me the vibe she wants to be a hivemind like how she was back on the mothergum -This is the second episode where Cake tells a character they should kiss an alternative version of themselves. Self love i guess. -Will the worlds Simon travels to affect the Fionna and Cake universe? I kinda think it will but it's weird to me we didn't see that happening on the previous episode, like all the corn on farmworld feels like would trigger Autumn on Simon's mind since Winter Wonderworld triggered, well, winter

4:57 i dont think the winter climate has to do with the winter kings world, it has to do with the farm world crown jewel. In the same way Little Destiny started to get sick from the jewels, the jewel is slowly affecting Simon's mind. Lets see if that will be a plot point.
