“Simon Petrikov” was an amazing follow-up to “Fionna Campbell.” This episode explored the troubled and depressed psyche of Simon who feels alone and out of place in the Land of Ooo. We also got to see Choose Goose (now evil from Coconteppi’s ichor), Dirt Beer Guy, TV, and of course, none other than Finn Mertens (who got jacked)! The forest environment in this episode was also among my favorites. I cannot wait to see what developments occur next after the fun (and sadness, when it comes to Simon) that was episode 2 of Fionna & Cake.

The fact tho, that Ice King wanted to find love and to be accepted and appreciated ever since he came to be. Only for people to actually start missing him and like his works/personalitty long after he himself ceased to exist, adds several more layers to Simon's depression.

Finn isn't really a bad guy here. But in burying his own grief, he is acting very emotionally immature. He sent Simon out to gather wood in hopes of him getting into trouble so that he would have something to distract himself. When you know that a younger Finn had grown to be introspective and knew when to slow down and talk things over, it's a marked difference.

To me, it seems Finn's recklessness stems from his underlying desire to meet with Jake again in the deadworld. Like he said in "Together Again," he was hoping to reunite with Jake the entire time after Jake died. I think he's abandoned any sort of fear of death at this point because he secretly wants it to some degree

@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 I think he's saying Finns Brain is Similar to Martin's and he means the lack of wisdom in this older Finn's advice. Distracting himself like Martin, instead of getting to the root of problems. Opting to take Simon on a quest and not talk about sad stuff when Simon is clearly experiencing deep deep grief. Its similar to how Martin would not address Finn's grief when Finn confronted Martin about it. and would just divert the problem to something that related to himself like "oh my ships on fire.". Finn's unique "Hero heart", like you said, can still be seen though. As he pays respect to all life, and he holds values instilled by his mother & adopted family, and his friends.

I interpreted it as Finn having no frame of reference for what Simon considers "normal". Finn grew up in a fantastical world filled with magic and incredible science. He's been slaying monsters and rescuing princesses since he was a kid. All of that is just normal for him. Even if he empathizes with Simon and wants to help him, Finn doesn't, and in some ways can't, really understand him and what he's going through.

I love the duality of Simon being an insane man in an insane world chasing mundane while Fionna is a mundane woman in a mundane world chasing insanity. I am so excited for the upcoming episodes seeing them talk out each other's problems while having wacky adventures with the two, and well, Cake. I sort of didn't expect the crew to give Simon some believable quarrels. It makes total sense that the man who lost everything he loved and got stuck in a world far from what he's used to by adventuring, wouldn't wanna continue adventuring. It also makes total sense that Simon doesn't wanna talk about his problems, he doesn't want to hurt other's feelings. Him opening up to pretty much only Finn also makes so much sense. Finn is the closest thing to what Simon thinks of as "human" as "normal" as "mundane". Making Fionna said mundane woman was such a good conscious decision, it leaves for SO much writing potential and it means that them eventually teaming up makes so much sense. EDIT: I think the repeated mention of people liking the Fionna and Cake books more is purposeful sub-text that people like Ice King more than Simon. It's supposed to hammer home just HOW alienated he truly is in the Land of OOO. Noone even wants him around, which feeds his depression EVEN further.
@randomatorPHD
@randomatorPHD 10 ай бұрын
Simon’s major problem is that since shedding his persona as the ice king, he unintentionally dropped far too much of what made him himself. Even before the ice crown drove him completely insane, Simon was a lovable weirdo. Now he associates that charm with someone else and as a result has reverted to “a normal human” as a personality. He isn’t caged in that human exhibit, he literally has the keys, but chooses to shut himself out the moment someone reminds him of who he used to be. Simon’s story here will likely revolve around embracing his stranger side and learning to love all of himself.

The depiction of Ooo ~12 years after the finale is just so rich and filled with character. I’ve always believed that one of Adventure Time’s best aspects is its sense of setting and the fact that Ooo is such a fully realized world with so much detail. The worldbuilding allowed the show to be as creative as possible with its plots. I’m so glad that sense of setting has carried over to the spin-offs and sequels.

It was disturbing but really profound to take the direction that Simon being the ice king was a bit like being high. He essentially was in a drugged out fugue state for thousands of years so that he never had to really feel biting existential misery. It really mirrored the struggle a lot of people have in sobriety, where they’re no longer a part of the madness, and yet relapsing offers a tantalizing rescue from the drudgery of the daily grind and the boring person they are now.

It's a perfect allegory for not just addiction, but the struggle that comes with the memories of that other "life" never going away, and how to deal with that. Tom Kenny deserves all the awards for his performance as Simon. He's able to perfectly capture the existential malaise of being trapped in a world he doesn't belong in, and the agony of constantly being reminded of a former life you can't relate to anymore. Also, it seems like Finn inherited the best and worst traits of his dad whether he's aware of it or not. He's got confidence for days and the brains/brawn to back it up, but it seems like he's really leaned into the toxic psychological state of "If I don't think about them, my problems will just go away!" Granted, he's way nicer than Martin ever was and genuinely cares about other people's trauma, but it also feels like he's not able to relate to anyone else's position secondary to his own, so his idea of helping is to just make people go through the same coping mechanisms HE would go through. Empathetic to a fault, but a sort of narcissistic form of empathy when you think about it. You can tell this is a Finn who's still processing the grief of losing his brother and his best friend, and has gone all in on escapist adventures that stop him from feeling sad but also don't really give him the emotional support he desperately needs. At least we've seen Together Again at this point, so we know that he turns out alright eventually, but the guy's had it pretty rough. Side note, but one of the reasons I've loved/missed this show so much is that it treats its characters as real people with all the baggage that comes with that. A lesser show would just make them funny cartoon people again for some kind of nostalgic cash grab, but not Fionna and Cake. This is a show that picks up RIGHT where the finale left off and proudly portrays what people are like at a more mature stage of their life, not simply catering to fanservice but continuing informed, logical character arcs that audiences have been invested in up to this point. This is how you properly revive a franchise, and I hope other studios take note of that.

For once I actually got an alert for a video! I identify a lot with Simon. Partly from being someone who spent 10 years unable to walk, and even though I’m still disabled I can manage walking short distances around my flat. But because of the few improvements I’ve had, the parts that have gotten worse are ignored and people around me seem to be waiting for me to start living a more normal life and get a job. It’s like the entire world is completely different now from the world I was trying to find a job in before. I’m constantly reminded of who I used to be before I got sick and who I was when I was unable to do anything at all and I can’t go back to either of those but there’s so much in the way of me making a new life for myself either. And people trying to help me just keep dragging me into their own problematic ways of coping with their own reality, and because they are able to work full time and think it’s a simple case of I “don’t have to work” (as if I have a choice) it’s hard to relate to them and hard to believe they’ll take my issues seriously because they think my lack of a job is a freedom and a choice despite it boxing me into a situation where I can’t afford basic necessities half the time let alone “luxuries” like body wash that I’m not allergic to and pop. The existential crisis of craving the past, being jealous of a sick version of ourselves for being too out of it to care how messed up everything is and struggling to get a foothold in the world we found ourselves in once our conditions improved enough for us to function on a basic level all hits way too close to home for me

Persononally I would like to see Simon acknowledge Ice King as his own invidual with hopes and dreams who is now gone. And so do Ice King ... well in his case, it would be literally acknowledging Simon existence ;)

I think it’s heavily implied that Fionna and Cake’s universe exists inside of Ice King’s own head and represents his inner psyche (thus cat leaping out of the back of his head). I think it used to be a magical universe as we saw in the series but when Simon became himself again the magic was stripped away and it became depressing, mirroring his current state. This would also explain why Fionna and Simon have the same experiences walking through the woods/street, the banana guards talking about HR, the people on skates/fairies, etc.They’re not just thematically linked, they’re how ice king sees his own life.

9:45 Not only is that a Martin-esque wink, it's also EXACTLY the same coping mechanism that Martin used when faced with his own trauma. Finn is a LOT more like his father then he'd probably like to admit...

Poor Choose Goose, but I guess that explains why he was down in the muck in "Together Again." But this episode was so packed with stuff, it's almost overwhelming, and I have a feeling that these first 2 episodes will be even more interesting after the rest of the series airs. Which is what I loved most about the original AT series, it can feel different rewatching it once you know how things will go, and I'm still finding new things in the background. Distant Lands didn't always quite get there for me, although I love it a lot, but this series definitely knows how to layer things.

4:00 It's more than that. I watched both episodes at the same time - camera pans synch up. When ice prince appears, simon is in his memory saying 'no darling, it's me' and the next time we see ice prince is just after marcy has fallen asleep and simon is staring at the crown. The cheers theme ends just as Fionna's sitcome-esque theme comes on. Hunter appears as Finn mentions going to see Huntress Wizard and their whole walk through the garden up to around where Fionna calls him Ellis fits nicely within the Rebecca Sugar song. I am almost positive that not only are we supposed to believe that these episodes take place at the same time, we're supposed to watch them that way too.

Simon Petrikov is, imho, one of the greatest characters ever created!! Amazingly complex, easily relatable and artistically expressed. It's absolutely brilliant, sad and beautiful at the same time. Oh, and in regards to the "increase" in violence, remember, no show has done a better job of "growing with it's audience" than this entire series.

I am just so glad that Adventure Time keeps.. going on, with the story getting always better, while still retaining all those great aspects of introspection, human psyche and philosophy. At this point it is almost a labor of love to ensure it keeps going strong while not fumbling the ball in any specific area. I mean, Jake dying? When would that ever happen if this was done solely for the revenue aspect? And it adds so much depth to everything. I just love this show so much.

just a random detail I noticed, but the body that finn steps on when running to save simon from the bear creature looks a lot like dung defender (aka ogrim) from hollow knight; kinda morbid to see such a loveable character from one of my favorite games have their corpse be used as a stepping stone lol, but having hk referenced at all was really cool to see :]

Didn't know until someone else told me but Tom Kelly being Simon's voice actor is also so cool! I love the way he portrayed him and having more characters to associate with him besides "classic spongebob" really broadens his voice to me when it's coming out of an old man instead of a young sponge
