Hey there! Awesome video, and huge props to you for getting all the way to our part of the world (I come from Kazakhstan, but I've trekked to Issyk-Kul once). Very nice to see people coming here and having a good time! :) I wanted to ask for your opinion on horse riding training in the West vs. East. As in, I've done quite a bit of horse-trekking in the Altai mountains, and I've never received any training whatsoever. What the Kazakh do is just plop you on a horse and let you go - and boom, in 10 minutes you're (almost) not scared shitless anymore, and in about an hour you can easily take a tour of the village on horseback. And two hours later they take you on a trip to the mountains with tiny serpentine mudtrails, steep slopes and everything else. Sure, it takes a bit of time to work up the stamina (it's tough on your legs and knees and especially groin), and there are certain amazing skills you need to develop if you want to become a master, but it's not treated as something essentially hard at all. So I've always thought of horse riding as an an "easy to get into, hard to master" sort of thing. So imagine my shock when I found out about the "ride in a small circle while the trainer is holding a long reign" stuff, the long drills, the helmets, the "know your horse" stuff (in the Altai, while they have a lot of respect for their horses and communicate with them really well, they also actually let them roam wild for months at a time so as to not waste time and money feeding them). In the West, horse-riding is treated as something both dangerous and extremely hard to get into. I honestly get the impression that it is mostly done by horse-riding trainers who try to make themselves appear necessary and indispensable so as to sell more lessons. So what is your opinion on the matter? Do you get the same impression of the eastern VS. western horse culture as me? Did you ever get Western horse-riding training? If so, how did you like it?
@samuelandaudrey6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! To be honest I think it has to do with liability and legal issues in those countries. Should an accident happen the person who is injured might try to sue the owner/trainer and if they can prove a lack of training they would be more likely to win a case. To be honest I appreciated the style in Kyrgyzstan more as we had a true adventure. A couple of times we jumped off of the horse for steep sections of the mountains because we didn't feel comfortable but mostly we just stayed on and we became much more comfortable because of it.

Pro-tip: make sure to tell your guide to bring longer stirrups well in advance, or at least to make your stirrups as long as possible once you're there. Most locals tend to be on the short side, so if you don't adjust your stirrups, your legs will be bent at a very sharp angle resulting in hella sore knees. Especially relevant if you're tall or, errm, have freakishly long legs, I guess.

Hey dear Audrey and Samuel, I was checking your videos and thinking about going to Kyrgystan for a short vacation. I travel mostly alone and because of that I don't feel comfortable driving by myself in mountains and areas like that. By any chance can you clarify for me if there are any tours availabe, besides the ones from CBT, starting from Bishkek exploring the surrounding areas like Issyk Kul lake or Karakol? Do you think I can just stroll around Bishkek and find some tour agencies easily? Thanks for your videos and your kind help. :*
@samuelandaudrey7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That is awesome to hear! Definitely you can organize and arrange things upon arriving. Yeah, you'll find agencies in Bishkek and Karakol quite easily. I think the key is to kind of have an idea of what you'd like to do in advance and then communicate that to the operator. I think it would be quite easy to custom tailor a trip.

Great video as always guys! I was hoping you could answer a few of my questions: -When were you guys there? You mentioned Ramadan so I'm guessing it was fairly recently? -If so, are hail and thunderstorms a common thing in the summer there? -You guys look like you're wearing some pretty heavy duty jackets. How cold (or warm) was it? -I hope to visit Central Asia at some point (Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan/etc) and I'm trying to figure out when the best time of year to go is Your videos are great! Keep telling us about cool places, guys!
@samuelandaudrey7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! We visited in the middle of June. The thunderstorms were not common (just the one afternoon) but any activities around the mountains meant you could experience quite a bit difference in temperature and weather all in the same day. For our hiking trips it was very hot by midday (with really strong sun) so we often kept our light jackets on to protect our skin but by morning and night it really cooled off and we needed to dress warm - sweaters and jackets. I think late spring or early fall might be the best time to go. That is really cool you're considering the region as a whole. We'd love to do a big trip there ourselves someday.
