Aloha. This reminded me of being a kid in Ohio. Our neighbors across the road raised cows. They had a small pond that nobody fished, not the kids or the parents. I would literally knock on their door with my zepco outfit, a bucket and tackle box and ask the Smiths if I could fish. They always said yes, and I’d traipse down the dirt track. Loaded with big bluegill, sunfish, shellcrackers, plus some bass. I’d use worms, crickets, grasshoppers and any else for bait. Just a hook, bobber, and split shot. Beautiful days, and some good fried panfish.

What a treat to fish a virgin water - extremely rare. Does anyone remember Mr Crabtree who used to advise on fishing techniques in the 1960s 70s? He used to talk about the angler keeping low to avoid their shadow falling on the water .... I think he would have seriously disapproved of wearing a bright red fleece!

@@adventurefishinguk I thought it probably is but .... fish can still see just as well as they did then. Captivating comic strip style book, published, I think, by The Mirror group ( newspapers, not carp!) A compelling read for a fishing mad lad in the late 1960s.

We had a pond that was researched by the ministry and they said it was over crowded by perch and sunfish. I used to fish a lot in Sweden when I was younger. Quite often, I fished in small lakes. There is a phenomenon that directly translated would be "a lake of thousand brothers". It means that the lake lacks big perch, but there are very many small ones. There also exists the contrary, small lakes with just a few, but very big perch. I think it has to do with food resources, a small lake can either sustain a big population of small perch or a few big perch.

Jack Hargreaves fished a farmers pond and found a similar situation, but not with perch. He caught small roach after - small roach after…. And eventually concluded that they’d reached the terminal size that the water could feed. You end up with a pond of half starved dwarves. The biomass of a water gives the likely tonnage of life supportable in the place and sometimes a water is found where its characteristics favour successful breeding over successful food generation. Result is a population of starving pygmy fish.

Most of the time there is not much in an untouched pond, if left unchecked one species can take over by robbing nests and eventually be the only fish in there, then become overpopulated and they are all small. @4th_Lensman_of_the_apocalypse just because i catch fish i still like to put them back to be caught again and one day if i feed them enough they could be a record that's the true aim after looking after their health. I once caught a roach that was so big it went an inch over both sides of my 18inch landing net i sat there all day hoping someone would go by so i could ask them if they would watch my fishing kit long enough for me to get my camera and scales that i had left at home. no body went by in the 8 hours i sat there soi put the fish back out of my keepnet there were 2 scales in my keepnet the size of 2 pence pieces in UK money that's all i had of a possibly record breaking fish that day but i still remember it 40 years later

I bet that farmer would welcome juvenile pike or bass that normally get caught and released. Or maybe trap the perch en mass and sell them off to restock other water bodies?

man, you reeled that one perch in a bunch of times, it'll be exhausted.
