Really nice boat guys. We’re looking at buying a Salina that is coming on the market soon. I’m really interested in the structural issues you had, what they were and how you dealt with them. Anything you can share? Extending the keels and re-shaping the rudders was interesting. I also like the lower supports for the solar arch. Hope to see you out there on your circumnavigation!

I dunno, after seeing the prices of vanlife vans these days and how some vans are up over 200k (Not full on RVs, just built *vans*), and comparing what you get with a van vs what you get with that same investment in the boat scene, I gotta believe his assessment of 4 is *much* more accurate, maybe even a bit self deprecating. I don't think the boat scene has quite caught up to the inflation in the housing and the car market quite yet. It will though, because I can't be the only person looking at what the same investment will get in one vs the other. The downside is there's likely a price bubble coming as more people realize the same thing.

That was a fun review! Please do more of these Dan! I'm shopping for the "perfect 10" cat, right from the factory. 😳 I would love to know more about how much effort/expense went into adding all the upgrades to this boat. What would they do differently if they did it all over again? With so many hybrid/solar cats hitting the market, what is their opinion of these? I realize they are substantially higher in initial cost - I wonder how long it is before the fuel savings make up for it. Any way we could get an estimate/breakdown of their annual boat operating costs? How much should I be budgeting? What does it cost to insure a $500K boat? Thanks Dan - you are an excellent youtube host!

Hi Dwight. The upgrades cost us about $60k, and there are a few things Dan didn't touch on such as folding props and new spinnaker. Most of the labor for the upgrades was provided by me, so if you're paying someone plan on at least double that. There are no upgrades I regret, and the only thing I would do differently is to not hire out the install of the freezer and washer. I had to redo the whole job anyway so there was no point in paying them. The big upgrades were done before we left Florida and I'm not counting them as part of our annual budget. Our annual budget is $60k, and we spend roughly half of that on maintenance. I DIY almost everything because the quality of work with contractors always irritates me. I don't want to pay for terrible work. If you don't DIY, it's going to be a lot more expensive. The age old question of how much does it cost to sail full time is easily answered with another question. How much do you have? It costs exactly that much. Insurance is terrible, especially for US citizens on US flagged boats. When we bought the boat insurance was expensive, but until we were full time the boat lived in Florida where hurricanes could be a problem. After taking the boat out of the hurricane zone, our insurance went up even more. So we dropped to liability only. It's cheap, and also great motivation to take great care to not put the boat in harms way. Our German friends with the same boat pay only slightly more for full coverage than we pay for liability. I'm not a huge fan of hybrid propulsion systems. Fuel is one of our lowest expenses at about $600 a year. It's not even enough fuel to make the climate people upset. Hybrid systems cost a lot and are an unproven system. When you're at a small island hundreds of miles from parts or a technician who can troubleshoot the system, you need reliability. If I were new boat shopping I would insist on Nani engines. It's a Kubota engine with no electronics. Hope this helps.

The best build quality you'll get in a cruiser/ luxury cat is probably Privilege. But, you'll pay for it. A Privilege will be much more expensive vs a similar length cat made for the charter market. You'll get a lot less boat for the money, but it will be a really nice boat. Low maintenance? Good luck with that.

Hello Dan, I saw your video on the 48 foot catamaran pugeau at $500,000. Just wanted to ask what your take is on the brand Silent yachts going back to 2016 and moving forward and also a question do you believe a solar powered catamaran should have Gyro sea keeper. Second question, would you find that it is a good investment for a solar powered camera with a diesel generator back up? You’re very intelligent and I think you should do a tour of a solar powered catamaran. I want to be out on the water, but I don’t want to have a sale catamaran I’d be better on a power or solar power catamaran, what would you think that the residual value would be after five years on a solar power catamaran percentages to share?

The same as it costs to run any boat. All of it. Just look in your bank account, that's how much it costs. It doesn't matter if your budget is $10k a year or $200k. All of it. Now that you understand that what it costs is highly variable depending on how much you have to spend, we have an annual budget of $60k, and half of that goes to maintenance.

Great video, but I completely disagree with the price point score. Have you looked at the price of 50 foot luxury catamarans lately? I think the $500K price point is a steal when it is around a third of what a new one would cost. That said, $500K is WAY too much for me also, but that does not mean it is over-priced. I do not believe it is fair to use the logic "can anyone buy this boat" when determining if the price is too high. Heck, I could not afford a jet airplane at $10M, but that does not mean it is over priced. Not everyone can buy a jet airplane or a very large luxury catamaran, but that does not mean they are over priced. In this case they got a 50 foot luxury catamaran for about 1/3 the price of new and the boat had essentially never been sailed. I would say that justifies and price grade of 10, not 2.

hi there, great channel, because its not full of bull s,,,t ,,id rather be on a boat like yours personally,,you will do more nautical miles on her than having a bigger yacht, where it can all go pair shaped real quick with d..k head crew on board ,,i lived on my yacht in a marina for 2,5 years which i got the berth for free due to the contract i had with the owner of the marina ,,anyway i used to do 1500 nms a year and worked 7 days a week on call ,,,my yacht was a 25 ft Sonata trailer sailer ,,but at the end of the day all the larger boats did far less nms due to trying to get suitable crew ,,so in a nutshell K.I.S keep it simple ,,,yeah get a new headsail and maybe a genicka ,,u have great power supply water and a knew dingy,,wat else do you need ,,,owning a 60 ft tri like riley is so scary ,,i bet they wont keep it for that long is my guess ,,yet you will still be sailing ,,,so yeah go for it big is not always the best as you know ,cheers

I’m no sailor and just now getting introduced to the sailing world but he said at the beginning this boat was a sloop and from my understanding it doesn’t take a big crew to work a single mast, 1 to 2 people max, not to mention the various electric wenches this boat has. Maybe I’m misunderstanding

You will if you want to. I never graduated high school and was an auto mechanic. It took me 20 years to buy the boat and make sure I had enough money to live out my days. Focus on the goal and you can get there.

@@moonlander03 One piece of advice I got after struggling for years is to get new friends. Find successful people and make friends with them, and stop having time for people who are going nowhere in life. Don't be afraid to repeat this process as many times as necessary. You won't believe the difference it will make.

We can hear you without seeing you, point the camera at the boat while you talk, stop pointing the camera at yourself. It's about the boat, not you. 11:54 we don't care a damn about your 'reaction'.

A 20 minute video turned 60 + minute. Over advertising too. Need some negative. There's always a negative about anything.
