WELCOME!!! To this full in-depth tour of my beautiful 1984 Beneteau Idylle 11.5m or 38' long sloop rigged monohull sailboat. My humble home upon the sea.
Three years ago, I went up and down the East coast of the USA looking for a sailboat to buy. With a considerable amount of help and advice from my sailing mentor Don. I purchased this boat in Cape Cod Massachusetts for $23,000.00. At that time the boat was on the hard with it's mast down in an old boatyard miles and miles from the ocean. It was hard to imagine that it would be the boat for me. But after about a month of working with the seller and his broker. We splashed the boat, stepped the mast and sea trialed her. After that, I was confident the sailboat was what I was looking for.
But after several major improvements and upgrades I've made during major refits. The boats value is now far greater than when I started. As is it's practical usability can speaks for itself through the adventures I've had and showcase on my social media pages "Adventureman Dan".
From this boat I love to explore and go on adventures wherever my anchor rests. The boats name perfectly explains what it represents:
-Adventure: (An unusual and exciting or daring experience. Or to engage in daring or risky activity.)
-Borne: (Carried or transported by the thing specified.)
-Adventureborne = "What brings me to the adventure."
This is a humble sailboat. But that is an upside I think. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. This sailboat is highly affordable and has an extremely low cost to maintain. Allowing me to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry of breaking the bank.
On top of that, my main expense out here in the Bahamas would be food. But nearly a decade of spearfishing around the world has given me the capability to consistently harvest food from around my sailboat through freedive spearfishing. Allowing me to further extend my time at sea. While feasting and sharing it's bounties with my fellow sailors.
In the future I plan to make more improvements and upgrades to this boat. Stay tuned to see what comes next!

NICE ! I paid for my 40 footer 8K and it's best boat on the planet for me. Almost no interior, no pluming, no engine, nothing to break! No stuff it's lighter so it's going faster :) less stress on rigging. minimalism is negotiable :) Livening on it full time for 3+ years. kzbin.info/door/pDQ14k0TTfaVNzuUohUmxgvideos

Well done Dan!!! Seriously! The upgrades are super practical and well thought out. The only things I might add would be an outdoor BBQ strapped to one one of the stern railings. Briquette is simpler to install, propane simpler to use. Would definitely have to be all stainless, burners, grates etc. They're nice for adding variety to your meals, and can be used on low to smoke fish and double as a way of meat preservation. I personally also have a vacuum packer. They're small, can be easily stored. But when you catch something a little larger you can effectively store much of it for later and not feel compelled to eat the same thing B, L, and D so as not waste food. Super impressed. Keep up the good work.

Very similar to the re-fit I did to my Dromor Apollo 39 feet boat. Just a few choices I made different from you: 1. I went for a new YANMAR engine, since I had recurring problems with the heat exchanger of the Volvo Penta 2. I also sorted all Victron and other electronic regulators of solar and wind energy on one panel in one of the aft cabins. Gives me a better overview if there should be any malfunction. 3. I went for LIFEPO4 batteries, got the cells and built 2x 260 AMP batteries with all the required safety features. Only the starter battery of the engine is still an old technology lead acid battery, but I replaced it with a new one. Charging of both through the alternator of the engine requires a separate VICTRON regulator. 4. I replaced all ropes and lines, but kept the sails since they are in good condition 5. I added a stern anchor, one of these flat 'duck feet' shaped which need little space to keep it in one of the aft boxes 6. I replaced the entire cooling system of the fridge with a more efficient one with electronic regulation. It is one of the biggest energy consumers, so newer technology is worth the expenses If you ever come to Greece, let me know, would be interesting to see the two boats next to each other!

Several years ago I owned a Kirie Elite 37 designed by Ron Holland. Watching your video I couldn't help but realize how similar the two boats are in design and layout. Although I never confirmed it, I believe the Kirie was built in the Beneteau factory in France. So much of the interior woodwork is the same as are the hatches and portlights. The engine compartment access is idential; my Kirie had a Yanmar but it wasn't the original engine. The Kirie was shoal draft with a hydraulic centerboard. She sailed like a dream. Although it wasn't for sale, one day an acquaintance asked how much I wanted for it and after hearing my price (the same that I had paid for it ten years earlier), he purchased it. I immediately became serious regarding a 1996 Beneteau 42s7 that was for sale and purchased it. After eleven years I'm still sailing the 42 and love it. Thanks for the tour. By the way, if you search my name here on KZbin you'll find videos containing the Kirie.

What a great vessel for all of your adventures, Dan! Really, she's a looker- inside & out. You've done a nice job of keeping her both current & classic at the same time. Not easy, but- tastefully done. Impressed with your 'work shop', engine access (gotta love a 'broken in' Volvo Penta, right?) & 1,000W of solar is a great start cuz I'm guessing that you could use that in 4 hours of laptop, drone & GoPro charging! Hahaha- there's never enough! I hope you are comfortable in heavier weather while out at sea as she is a bit old in the tooth. But, well serviced as we can see! Seriously- Good on Ya!

Why would it be too small?
@icewolfen6360
@icewolfen6360 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I will check out Wind Hippie Sailing. My biggest concern is the bolted fin keel and shallow draft, only 1,5 meters. The majority of smaller boats that cross oceans, 32feet and below seems to have full keels. I guess the right equipment, planning and preparations is the most important part. It looks to me that catching the trade wind when going west over the Atlantic is a fairly safe voyage. The return route back to Europe in the Northern Atlantic seems more unstable due to more unpredictable and heavy weather.

@@manuelkirstetter2482 Tankage, galley space, food storage, deck space for solar/wind turbine, battery bank, 1-2 people's stuff. 31' is pretty small. 34-36' is practical minimum, 38-42' is the sweet spot.

Man I’d love to own a sailboat with one day. I’ve been living on a M/Y for two years and haven’t regretted it. Although it is more spacious and feels like an RV on the water, I dislike the fact that I’ll be always limited to the amount of gas it consumes which isn’t cheap :(

Keith from Sailing Zatara is a wealth of incredible info as well, and I'm in touch with him as I'm in the stages of getting out of the "Rat Race" as soon as possible, yet knowing that refits and upgrades take time, and so many other important things to always KNOW about sailing. We cruised on our 43 ft sailboat for 9 years. I often wonder why no one talks about the costly upkeep of owning and operating full size live aboard vessel whether it’s power or sail. The boats don’t fix themselves and unless your accustom to repair and replace Diesel engines, macerator pumps, water systems, you’ll be paying big bucks to a marine mechanic or technician. Slip rates, electricity, water are costly. Size of vessel is restricted for living on board. Not to mention ratio % in marina plus extra live on board fees, 200.00 to 300.00 on top of slip rate. It not cheap. You could live on the hook and that’s a whole story in itself.
