The Pikmin 'Shortcut good' feeling reminds me of the progression in Metroidvanias, like when you unlock a new area or gain a new way to traverse the environment. That's all I got, praise Bungler.
@Toluj330
@Toluj330 Жыл бұрын
I personnally would make the metroidvania comparison to pikmin 2 instead, in 1 most of your shortcuts are worked for, not through upgrades, but by progressing through the level and getting rid of potential threats. In 2 it's less "hard work" dependent, it's the electrical fence for the yellow pikmin or the poison fence for the white ones, which is fine since the outdoor areas are barely half the game anyways but I do find it to be a bit of a shame they decided to make the shortcuts more roadblocks.

Ironically enough, I got this same feeling after making it to a location in Elden Ring that I had spent the past couple hours seeing off in the distance. Making it to Raya Lucaria and the captial, for example, gave me that same sense of accomplishment for exploring and gradually progressing through an unknown world. This was further exacerbated for me by seeing the scale of the map exponentially blow up throughout the game, as if to say "This is all part of the same world, look at how far you've come." I'm kinda surprised Leon took so many shots at the game when I feel like it personally gave me the same feeling fron Pikmin that he was so emphatic about. But maybe he's trying to sprinkle in a hot take idk

@@Toluj330 If you really wanna be thin about it, technically Super Metroid has skill based short cuts. Nothing feels better then seeing a spot and thinking "I could probably get up there" and then you do with some stupid ass movement tech. Fucking love super metroid.

@@_SomeThingsILike_ Super Metroid is so good for that, on repeat playthroughs you can just wall jump and get to areas early, that's something I feel few metroidvania do, the secret tech that can allow you to do stuff early (hollow knight comes to mind with nail bouncing)

The Pikmin one insight is so freaking spot on. I've been trying to put into words why the feeling of creating shortcuts on pikmin 1 was so fantastic. Felt like a breakthrough in your escape from the planet, and I couldn't put my finger on why it didn't feel the same in Pikmin 2. Excellent video! That DMC3 take is gonna get you crucified.

as a fan of the dmc franchise, the more I play 5 the harder it is to play 3. The combat is good but after a while those levels become insufferable and then there's the boss fights. Many good ones but about half of them are just beyond awful and tedious. Arkham, Jester, Geryon doppelganger etc. It still holds up in a lot of ways but it's tough to get back to even compared to 4 which also has its own problems.

DMC3 was a great setting bottlenecked by really unflattering level direction. Memorable weapons, Shitfuck confusing rooms with borderline invisible pathways forward and lots of janky "do this specific thing to progress" moments in bossfights. It's definitely worth it to get to DMC5, and 4 was alright but the second half of 4 is padded to hell and back with repeat levels and fluff. If you like Pikmin, i am literally begging you to play Overlord 1 and 2. They're like Pikmin, but more "Adult". Which basically boils down to there being blood and romance options. But there's also a base upgrading (not building) aspect which feels neat, and your Minions (the Pikmin equivalent) can find gear and get stronger. So I personally find myself getting attatched to certain minions, and getting sad when they die. But yes, Overlord rules and i'd love to see how you feel about it

I dunno about comparing Pikmin to RTS games like C&C, Starcraft, Total Annihilation is one that makes sense since you're also on the battlefield along with the minions you control. The only other good analog I can think of is Overlord, and the main difference mechanically is that you can actually fight things yourself in Overlord, you don't have to rely on the minions to do everything though the game plays much better if you do. There might be a Kingdom Under Fire game that also does this too, I dunno, I only played the one on PC called "A War of Heroes" and that did its own thing with story mode where it had some random Diablo esuqe levels for the main characters and you could find powerful gear that made them WAY stronger, allowing you to need less of an army and more of an escort for the heroes. Also people called it Warcraft 2.5 in the day but I loved it for what it was

Now, pikmin 2, im like halfway through, gave up on it and havnt played it in months, and assuming I do finish it, I dont see myself ever going in for a replay. I dont hate pikmin 2 but having played 1 so many times and then going to pikmin 2... im not exactly as big of a fan of the sequel as you clearly are.
