I hiked and camped in Paria canyon in 1987 - probably before you two were born! I thought that was a different slot canyon than Buckskin Gulch, but the arch at the 5:30 mark in your video looks exactly like one I have in a photo, so maybe it was the same trail. I remember those wooden ladders and the logs jammed between the canyon walls 25 feet overhead. Glad you were spared any flash floods! Back then I think we had the entire canyon to ourselves. Camping overnight was a special treat - the bats come out at dusk.
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
Adam may have been a month old haha (November 1987 baby!). This hike is located in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area (as well as also Grand Staircase-Escalante), so it very well was the same one! The log jams up above were insane! A big reminder that water still gets VERY high in there! Camping out there would've been so so cool!

@@AdventuresofAplusK I'm glad you showed the petroglyphs. I don't know why I don't have photos of those - have plenty of sandstone rock textures, they look like rope or layers of cake frosting. I was there in June 1987 but remember it like it was last week. We also did Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Monument Valley, Marble Canyon and the North Rim of the GC. Thanks for letting me relive my adventures - I can't want to go back to Utah now. Still trying for The Wave…

FYI, as of end of October 2021, the ladder at 2:25 was washed out and is now located about a 1/4 mile down from the Wire Pass/Buckskin confluence wedged up about 30 feet above the canyon floor (which says a lot about how deep and dangerous flash floods in slot canyons can be). There is now a rope and a tree trunk at the scramble to help you get up/down. You also have the option of detouring around that section of slot.

Definite bucket list item for me. I would love to attempt a backpacking trip to hike the entire gulch to Lees Ferry. We were there with the golden ticket this past August. I wanted to add this on but the recent reviews stated the ladder was no longer present, so I didn’t even consider it. The area had some significant flash flood events over the summer. We didn’t go to Rockin’ V but I will give a plug for the Wild Thyme Cafe.

My wife and I were at Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch on March 19. I suspect days after you. For those not able to get Wave permits, consider South Coyote Buttes permit lottery. Only 11 people came for the that lottery (held just after Wave lottery) and 10 people per day may hike there. DO NOT DO South Coyote Buttes without a high clearance 4X4 or you will more certainly get stuck in HIGH sand without cell service. They recommend you bring 3 days of food and water just in case. If you have these things... IT WAS WORTH IT AND FANTASTIC! Also ate at the Rockin V. It was so so.

Took a trip out west last summer. One day we were going to spend time at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, but there were wildfires there. We decided to do this trail instead. It was amazing. Did your track show up on your Alltrails downloaded map without the Garmin?

Hi! We have the Garmin connected to our phone via their app, which is how we send out texts if needed. The SOS is on the actual Garmin though, behind a little “door” so you don’t risk setting it off accidentally (not sure if you can do this from the phone to be honest). And we have AllTrails Pro, so we download offline maps and it tracks even without cell service (no Garmin needed!). I hope that helps!

That is a Garmin InReach! amzn.to/2NuiMBW It's a satellite device that lets us send messages to loved ones (without cell service) to keep them informed about our whereabouts, tracking, and also a SOS feature in case we ever get into trouble and need help.

It's a bit pricey (monthly fee as well) and something we never really hope to have to use (minus the texting feature), but it has given us great peace of mind!

Awesome video, as always! Two questions: (a) Does Kathryn ever DRIVE or is "A" as driver just the formula for the videos? (b) What footwear do you use for such hikes? I can't quite make out what you're wearing. Seems you'd need something sturdy. (Keep up the good work. I look forward to each week's new installment of A plus K.)
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha I don't drive much (I do know how to drive the van and have many times!) only because any time we are driving, I am editing a video, working my day job, or writing guides. So the deal is Adam drives, I crank out work. Hopefully one day our workload won't be so chaotic so I can drive more because I love to drive! For footwear, I wear Lowa Renegade hiking boots and Adam has Altra Superior trail running shoes. He prefers something less clunky than boots, but I love my boots because they are super water resistant and sturdy! Sometimes we wear hiking sandals (Chacos) if the terrain is appropriate for them.

At 9:39 you show tat you are driving 1112 mph on the dirt road. When we drove our rental RV (C25) to West Grand Canyon we did the same. On the way back I drove faster and at a certain speed, which I forgot of course, it didn't feel so bad anymore. The shaking was much less plus the trip takes less time. You really have to find out the ideal speed for your car and the road you are on, but it's not always slower is better.
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s tough in the van, since we have cabinets that are full of items that rattle. Going faster risks hurting our van build more. We went what Adam felt comfortable with

What time of year did y'all go? I tried to go in mid-march but the snow didn't look like it was going to agree with my 2-wheel drive

This was at the end of March! We didn’t see any snow, although it had snowed a couple days before in the surrounding area, so we waited to make sure the road was dry.
