How many of these cars in the river are stolen or auto insurance fraud?
In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we recover a '73 Ford Mustang Fastback after getting a call from a get-a-way driver from 20-years ago who said we are guaranteed to find a few vehicles in the river at the Tualatin Boat Ramp.
It appears he wasn't the only one to be involved in dumping cars underwater at this location here in Oregon.
Super stoked to have found a 1973 Mustang Mach 1 Fastback.
Crazy... RIGHT?

----------------------
It took us 2-days to recover the Mustang.
A lot of you are going to be a bit upset at how destroyed the Mustang Mach 1 became after we tried removing it from the river.
In our defense, there was an extra 8000 pounds of mud inside the car, along with the Mustang being underwater in the river for over 40-years.
It really did become a rustang!
True crime for sure, be it stolen or auto insurance fraud.

@@harlockJC correct i used to drive a tow truck and between stolen recoveries, insurance scams and even had a few revenge from significant others.. vehicles dont choose to be drowned they all have there stories.. i dont dive but i have ALOT of repect to the ones that do i am the one that moves them away.. we always bring a rotator no matter what as a rotator has more pull, more power and more lift with smoother controls and they also have alot longer spools underwater vehicles depending on age of the vehicle and/or how long they have been under they can be 5-20 times there original weight hence the majority look like they have collapsed suspensions..

Yep…..I bought a 1971 Mach1 used in 1975. It was fun HOT car…..terrible on fuel mileage and driving that car revealed several blind spots. The side mirrors were nearly worthless. Sold it in 2018 for 5X as much as I paid for it originally. Back in 1975…..plenty of used Mach1’s were available for at reasonable prices. I miss those days!

That is one brutal vehicle recovery. By the end I couldn't stop laughing. You raised a fairly intact car that was very fragile. But the recovery at the ramp was like something out of a national lampoon movie or Farris Bulers day off. A stick of dynamite would have been more delicate. The car was gone in 60 second! Gone into confetti that is! That was priceless. You just made my day.

Anyone who grew up in the area knew that section of the river had a lot of junked cars. There wasn't much call to pull them out ... most were insurance dumps after someone got in over their head on their loan. I remember floating that section in innertubes during drought years in the late 70s and you could see some of them.

You've become my favorite diving channel really quick. You're serious divers working methodically and correctly. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE ocean and clear water photography but I really appreciate how you manage the dive so well. One idea for clearing much out of the vehicle is using a pressure water pump to spray it out, assuming it's just river muck, the type used in oilfield environments. A catchphrase my coach in high school gave us if you like; winners never quit, quitters never win.

I live in North Carolina. Do you ever come south??? Where I grew up there is a river called the Catawba River. It runs the county line between Iredell & Catawba counties...The Lookout Dam heads the river...Right down from the dam on the Catawba side there is a Volkswagen Beetle in the water near the bank. When the water goes down from drought or lack of rain, you can see the top of the Volkswagen. It has become almost an unban legend. But I've saw the top of it before, years ago...I don't know the back story on the Volkswagen beetle. Its been in the river for at least 40 years or more...I'm not asking ya'll to pull it up since its not my car but I think it is interesting & when the river goes down I always go to see if I can see the top of the Beetle. Nice work, gentlemen. Don't feel bad about the Mustang coming apart, that was 35-ish years underwater, looked just like the Camaro from Foss Lake. The modular style aftermarket wheels and Goodyear Eagle GT tires put this into the mid '80s. The engine is a 351 Cleveland (with headers, and the previous video showed a Holley 4 barrel carburetor, this was someone's hot rod) , the transmission is an FMX automatic, and the rear end is a 9 inch. '71-'73, hard to tell exact year, not much left to go by.

Nice to see the clean up and recovery. Naturally the Mustang had rotted out. These cars had rust problems of their own, long before being put into a river for many years. I would be nice if someone who was maybe retired from law enforcement could track down the plate and get more of a back story on who owned it, when it went missing, etc. The back story is as good as the recovery itself. Hey, "AWP" - - - Now there’s an excellent well produced video ! Great videography, (including the quad-copter shots). The amazing thing is that you persevered and didn’t just say the hell with it !!! BTW, I had a 1971 Mustang fastback metallic silver / black interior that was the biggest POS I’ve ever ordered. Front fenders rotted out at the top in less than two years, (NO inner fender liners). The flat black 351 ram air hood paint was sprayed directly over dust and grit. The Mustang decal on the trunk lid had bubbles and a rip. Passenger side door had paint sags. The all plastic dashboard fascia components didn’t come close to lining up, and the fake chrome trim was pitted , (I had the optional gauge cluster). All those memories came “flooding” back as you guys pulled that disintegrating, crumbling, corpse of a car out of that river! Maybe the owner had similar problems and did say the hell with it. LOL!!! Keep those GoPros, drones, and underwater cameras percolating! Five thumbs up. Subscribed.

Suggestion: Bring along about 10 feet of chain link fence. You could roll it out under the car or tie lift bags to it, and you'd have something to grab onto when the car is like tin foil. It should be able to hold the weight...that stuff is tough!

Me and a friend went diving for fish in Norway once and we discovered a sunken Porsche 911 turbo 1978 we thought it was So we called a rescue boat that could fish the car up to the surface and look at it and to our surprise there where little to nothing rust on the engine so... we took on the difficult task and to restore it needed new body panels especially in frunk and the engine cover new turbo and some stuff inside the engine like the pistons and the spark plugs and all the electrical stuff was toast so had to buy new cables and now it kinda runs and most of the stuff works still needs new starter and windows and some new seats Edit: Kinda runs after like 5 years of restoring and taking off the old broken stuff and putting the new stuff inn

I just ran across your videos. It reminded me of a story that I was told about my Grandpa's brother that was a hell raising hillbilly his whole life. Back in 1957 he stole a 1957 Chevy from a local dealer one weekend, drove it all over then drove it out onto a small frozen lake and scuttled it. He went back to the dealer on the same weekend and took another one and did the same thing. To my knowledge there both still at the bottom of Davy Jones locker. Always wanted to find them if for no other reason to validate the story although I consider my source a very reliable one, but never got the opportunity. I'd be happy to share details if it was something you wanted to document.
