First time getting stuck in the sand! My name is Brian. I live on the road full time in my self built camper van. Join me on my adventures! In this video I leave Tolovana Beach in Tolvana Park ,Oregon. I head towards Sunset Beach, Oregon to drive on the ocean shores for the first time. There is a beautiful beach at Sunset Beach State Recreation Site. I am not sure of the legality but I slept in the van parked on the beach over night. The next day I try to pull out and get stuck in the sans. Fortunately and friendly local was there to help me out. Then I head into Astoria, Oregon where I find a camp in the Clatsop State Forest in Astoria, Oregon. There is a campground called Gnat Creek but it is very small with only 3 campsites so i just drove past the campground into the Sate Forest and found a dispersed camping spot in the woods(GPS: 46.188338, -123.482589 ). I will be exploring Astoria in the next video. Thanks for watching!

What a blessing that those folks were right at hand to help. Divine Appointment. The ocean always has be an awesome thing to me. When I'm there I see the greatness of it and it humbles me. It would be so fabulous to sleep on the beach. What a treat. I really liked the excitement in your voice when you found your "dead end" camp. Going beyond the status pays off again.

Glad there was someone to help you get unstuck🙂 That campsite you found later reminded me of something Nomadic Fanatic stayed at earlier this summer. I grinned when you mentioned the pretty wildflowers....we Oregonians know it as Tansy Ragwort....noxious to horses...I remember pulling them as fast as we saw them in our pastures when I was growing up!

Just for people in this situation again ; Stock tires do not provide enough flotation for todays rather heavy vehicles. They’ll cut into the sand like a hot knife in butter. You probably won’t get far. The resistance of the sand will soon slow you down to a stop. Small, light 4WD vehicles do best on soft sand. Very light vehicles with very big flotation tires will even drive without trouble in soft sand with 2WD This is very important for you to remember: *When the soft sand slows you down do not increase the gas* to maintain your previous speed! Allow your car to work through the sand slowly. It'll speed up by itself once the sand gets firmer. When you notice that one or more tires start spinning (if necessary have someone monitor the tires for you) get off the gas immediately! Spinning tires will dig deep into the sand and make going back to safe ground very hard. A speedy recovery is almost impossible. Forget momentum to carry you through soft sand. Using momentum means to be out of control. You’ll have almost no steering control. You could hit obstacles hidden in the sand or might smash into trees and bushes. The only safe and controlled procedure to drive on soft sand is with substantially deflated tires. Depending on your tire size and vehicle weight, drop from your regular tire pressure of about 30 psi down to at least 20 psi - much better for soft sand is 10 psi. Any pointy object pressed into the valve will release the air for you. You should carry a pressure gauge to dial in the correct psi. Why it is necessary to deflate tires in soft sand (or snow) Most modern vehicles have tires optimized for highway travel. They are as narrow as possible to reduce noise and friction for improved fuel economy. Narrow tires make cars sink deep in soft surfaces like snow and sand. When sunken in, the front tires have constantly a small berm of sand in front of them. While driving they push this berm without ever being able to climb it. That produces a lot of extra resistance. More resistance requires more torque to keep the vehicle moving. But traction is not good on sand. The sand particles are not stable and tires tend to dig in deep - only creating more resistance. You'll be stuck in no time. By airing down your tires, their footprint increases and they don't sink in as deep. That translates to less resistance and a lesser chance to dig in. Translates to a lesser chance to get stuck. *How much should you air down?* *A a standard rule - about 2/3 down from your recommended highway pressure.* *So, if around 30 psi is your highway pressure, *the psi setting for sand should be 10 psi.* If you drive in soft sand a lot, taller wider tires are a good investment. They have a much higher volume of air and can be aired down more easily to very low psi. Tires with an aspect ratio of 50 or lower (like a 255/50 R 16) have very low volume of air and should neither be aired down much, nor be used at the beach in soft sand. By the way, don't listen to guys telling you that MT tires are bad for sand. Its not the tire design but the low tire pressure that is important - and your gentle foot on the gas, of course.

Next time carry a good air compressor and let tires down to about 15 to 20 lbs to add traction. You should not have a problem. As soon as you get off the beach air up to avoid damage to tire sidewalls. Also if out in desert as you start losing traction stop and let air out. You do not want to dig in. There are two products you might want to look into. One is the Trac grabber. The other is Truck Claws. They strap to tire adding traction. Both can be found on Amazon.

Oregon coastal summer highs are mid 60s lows in the mid 50s. Interestingly, only 30 degree difference between summer average high and winter average low. I love living on the coast! Yeah, it rains, but that makes the green. Just an our inland and it warms up 20 degrees too.

I'm not saying it would've came in handy here. It was good that others were around to help him out. But this wasn't the first time he got stuck and probably won't be the last. I really appreciate your videos. They give me a good idea of some of the terrain I might face in the future. I know you do not respond to comments, but it would be nice if you could mention in a future video how many miles of forest road (on average) you need to explore before locating a suitable campsite. Also, do you keep detailed records of the prime sites you have found so that you can return if you go that direction in the future? (BTW, even a hightop van would have difficulty in passing some of the forest roads you've traveled recently.)

One problem with beach parking at the ocean is the sand is saturated in salt. Salt + steel = not good . Dodge vans use unibody construction. When the body rots out, so does the frame. The first part to usually go on the Dodge is near the steering box. Not an easy fix.

+Becky Collett No, it is from the KZbin music library. I always leave the music credits in the video description. Glad you enjoy it. 😁👍✌

Proper tires, aired down and you would have been golden. Looking into some good AT tires would be a wise investment for you.

Good you go some help, i've helped others and been helped by others, i am a believer in paying it forward and never charge anyone, but some do it for beeer money, which is ok too!l

I vaguely recall Brian saying in an earlier vid that that's what he studied at college. (May be wrong, might be thinking of someone else, and/or imagining things ;) )

+Alex Tucker Lots of trials in the woods. I found it is very easy to get turned around in the forest. Both hiking and driving I got disoriented a few times.
