Thanks Tanzeer, this helps a lot! It ties in well to your article about volunteering as well, I was struggling with how I should bring up all the experience I've gained but this helps set things into perspective

Thanks for watching Scott. Definitely a bit more professional, but the principle I want to communicate is to be more vigilant with what we say and how we say things.

We don't just have a 'picture' of a 20 year old being the way you describe, we have many experiences of 20 year olds being impossible to work with. Don't get me started....

I agree, the bar is set low for 20 year olds. I imagine you've had bad experiences with the 20 year olds you've worked with, and I don't doubt they were impossible to work with. Although, this belief that a proactive, diligent and mature 20 year old does not exist is simply not true. They do exist, they are just the minority. The 99% does not define the remaining 1%. If 99% of 80 year olds drive recklessly, that does not mean we do not have ANY 80 year olds that are responsible drivers.

@@tanzeerbhuiyan Good points. I have indeed worked with some very impressive young people. They are rare, just like terrific older people are rare. But when the young are difficult, they are difficult in that way the only the exuberance of youth can be--it is irrepressible and a bit condescending and arrogant. God Bless 'Em though.

I am one of those people who is 3x your age, and I couldn't agree more. I have seen young people who were qualified and competent get passed over for promotions in favour of outside hires when the young person was already doing the job as a placeholder! In many cases, this was avoidable. Here are the 3 avoidable reasons this happens. 1) younger people are more likely to come to work selling like a certain herb. They think no one else smells it. We can. It might actually make you a better worker but my gen doesn't care. We associate that smell with hippies. 2) young people come to work in wrinkled clothing. Just because no clients see you doesn't mean you can be wrinkly. Shake wet clothes well before placing them in the dryer. Remove them immediately. A quick iron pass takes 90 seconds. 3) if the boss says work starts at 9, it starts at 8:50. The people of my generation and older were raised with a factory worker mentality. In a factory , nothing works unless everyone is precisely punctual. That's not the case today. Why should a dev have such a rigid set time if his work is not so interdependent on the rest of a team? But Boomers don't see it that way, and they control who gets hired/promoted. So give yourself an edge. Also, Boomers like to hire single childfree women (who they view as having no encumbrances) and partnered men (who they view as having lots of support that the company can leverage). So men can frame a pic of themselves with their pretty cousin for their desk and lie and say it's a gf and women should hide any evidence of kids.

That's fucked up, sadly that may have toxic consequences on our society like in South Korea and Japan unless we change them before it's too late
