I got a 4 on the exam by doing a lot less work. Heres how I studied for the exam: [For tests throughout the year, I didn't take any notes (except the required summer notes to take the class). What I did is memorize the key terms in the chapter, and then used those to create a map/story for every test I had. I would read the textbook summaries if I felt like I needed to.] 1. I watched every US History CrashCourse (John Green) video at least once, watching the important ones 2 or 3 times. 2. I completed the practice MC that the collegeboard released (the full and half test) as those are the best representation of the MC for the upcoming test. 3. I bought Barron's flashcards and memorized as many as I could. 4. I looked at previous DBQ and LEQ questions and brainstormed answers for them, no point in wasting time and doing the entire thing. 5. I didn't study for short answer questions at all 6. I almost completely ignored periods 1 through 9, and most of 2 and 8 as well (2 because most of it is in a few terms, and 8 because I learned it right before the test). Focus on 4-7 Hope this helps anyone who is lazy like me :) just be prepared to cram for a solid couple days

I passed my APUSH exam back in 2019. Here are a few tips I have for you guys. 1. Spend more time practicing how to write essays than answer multiple choice questions. 2. Understand not only the basics of each time period, but how each topic connects to each other. This is a BIG part of the APSUH exam. For example in the video, one of the LEQs asked you to connect the Mexican-American War and Slavery. KNOW THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN EACH PERIOD AND TOPIC. 3. Don't cram. I know you hear this from everyone, but just don't do it. For some people, it can work, but just assume it won't. Start studying for the exam around a month or two before the AP Exam. 4. Learn the vocabulary from each time period. This will make reading documents way easier. If a document about the Wilmot Proviso comes up, you should already know what the Wilmot Proviso is. 5. Finally, get some rest before the exam. It helps so much. And try not to study extremely hard the day before.

This video helped me understand that, yes the course is going to be difficult but if I want to do well I must focus on key points and in connecting people, land and events to each other, which are skills I already posses. I did barely any work to study and really just did every heimler vid and took notes on it and did some practice tests and SAQs. probably 1-2 hours of studying a day and i would skip days hella. a good teacher helps and just pay attention in class and ask questions. this class is not hard and i found ap euro to be harder than this, also, ap euro will help u hella in this class.

I took regular u.s history in 8th grade, although we didn't go in depth as much like we did in apush we had an assignment every single day. It was horrible. That's why when I got to apush freshman yr I was shocked that we didn't have that many assignments. The only really difficult part of apush for me was the unit tests. I averaged like a 70%. The only A that I got on a unit test in apush was unit 7. My fav unit.

Zaharaaa it was my first one too and it’s honestly not that bad. My teacher gave us like 5 pgs of reading for hw each night and I took a bit of notes on each reading. And for the tests, try to watch videos, and know the CORE concepts of each chapter. Memorizing every single thing is a waste of time, and know a gist of each specific event along with mastery of the core concepts helps a lot with tests, as they mainly test analytical skills. Good luck with your endeavors!

I got a 5 on the 2018 APUSH exam and a final grade of A- for the course, and I don’t understand why people find this class so intimidating. First, I should mention that I only took 2 APs for my junior year (APUSH and AP Lang) so the class can become overwhelming for people taking a bunch of APs, which is understandable. Also, history is my favorite subject, so the class may be difficult and a chore for people who are not at all interested in history and are only taking the class for AP creds. I guess my experience was just completely different from what I’ve seen in these APUSH videos. For one, my APUSH class was actually APUSH 2, so we covered periods 6-9. This means that maybe I had the advantage of having more time to cover those 3 periods in depth but also had a disadvantage because I had not seen periods 1-5 since sophomore year in pre AP US 1 (and most of the test is based on those periods) or had learned them in the “APUSH style”, but I really didn’t found that a problem when taking the test and most of the Q’s I felt confident answering were from those periods. In my class, we actually didn’t have a textbook (except one with documents and sources we would use once in a blue moon during class), we did not take any notes, rarely had any homework, tests or projects, and did not do any sort of prep for the test. Instead, I had an understanding and great teacher who really knew his US history, did a bunch of document analysis (including pictures, cartoons, media, docs etc), wrote many essays for each period and section (evenly spread out so that it wasn’t overwhelming), took online quizzes based on the textbook we were supposed to have (I assume it was the book every other APUSH student has, and we were supposed to read but I just got the answers from Quizlet and never read) and just listened to the teacher talk and absorb the knowledge , which was not as boring as it sounds, since he really connected with his students. I think that is why I was successful. I had a great teacher and we didn’t waste time trying to memorize all of these facts, events and people. The test is almost completely stimulus based, meaning you read or look at something and answers Q’s based on that. The only skill you need is the ability to analyze and make connections, which is what I did throughout the year in my class. Also, a lot of practice for the essays, which will only help you learn how to meet the criteria for a good score instead of focusing on writing a masterpiece. The only part of the test were you will need some sort of specific knowledge is for the LEQ and some of the short answers. A few weeks before the test, we did review sessions in which we brainstormed key words for each period, I watched a lot of Crash course and took a few notes from the Gilder Lehrman web. If you have a good teacher, learn to analyze and connect the themes and are just interested in history, this class should not be difficult, nor is the test. However, this was my experience and I’m sure it was and will be different from that of others. Also, Im not saying you should not take any notes or read a textbook; if the teacher assigns it, do it. I’m just saying that freaking out about cramping info in your head will not help you, you need to learn how to think and analyze like a historian, which is the aim of the course.

Is it just my school or does your teachers actually test in 9 periods? My teacher divides the class into 7 units and each unit is massive. Our Unit III covers half of period 5 and all of periods 3 and 4. The teacher also runs the Advanced US History class like an AP class, but they start in the 1900s. He said our unit 7 is the equivalent to all of second semester Adv. US History.

so true. but really it depends on your class and its syllabus in my school most kids take WHAP before APUSH, so my teacher taught it as if we had already learned how to write all the essays, but i took the class without taking WHAP and i had no idea what a DBQ even meant. but luckily we did so much practice in class so i was really confident when it came time for the actual test. sorry to hear about your experience tho and good luck if you take other ap tests in the future
