In todays video we attempt to start the recently completed ae86 engine swap. The 4age engine swap was converted to run off of a series of bike carbs from a Yamaha yzf600r motorcycle . This jdm bike carbed 4age 16v engine will power the ae86 trueno coupe. The jdm 4age 16v engine is out of an AE92 and was converted to also run in the ae86 rwd orientation. This automotive build vlog documents the complete ae86 build project and the obstacles that may get in the way with a diy jdm project car.
In this video I also talk about how to wire a fuel pump relay as well as how to wire a relay to work with a Nodiz or Nodiz Pro ECU. Since we are no longer running a dizzy on the ae86 build project, we had to find a place to mount the coil pack as well as figure out how to wire up and use the Nodiz, trigger wheel, and crank position sensor together to get proper spark to the 4age. Stay tuned for more update to come on the project ae86. Maybe one day we will take the ae86 drift ing after completion. ea86 ae68 corrola toyoda ae86 project

I really love what he's doing with the car. I have a car with the same engine, it has crankshaft problems. but I live in Africa exactly in Lichinga Mozambique, and here there is a lack of accessories for this engine, so I am limited. but I really like your work. Too bad I can't do the same for lack of resources. I watch the videos whenever I can. hugs

That is one shaky engine...but it is still a milestone! Tips on the wiring: 1. Seperate different circuits. Example, split the wiring harness for the lights, ignition, power and signals. You would thank me if you would need to chase a wiring problem and you can give parts of the wiring some unique attention, like giving power wires their own place. Prevents extensive damages when battery power would short to something else. 2. Transfer the fusebox in the cabin if possible. Not only cleans the engine bay like what you want, but also serves as a theft deterrent because important parts of the wiring are inside the car, instead of under the hood. 3. It is better to solder than just plain crimp, specially on the thinner wires. Stress on the crimp can snap the wires off. ChrisFix has a video on the soldering/heatshrink process. 4. Almost always better to use heatshrink than using electrical tape. Exceptions include multiple-joint wires that cannot be heatshrinked cleanly, and the harness. Use a sleeve or soft conduit on the harness. 5. When doing the system wiring, I would prefer to put the entirety of the wiring in the cabin as much as possible. Not much of a trouble since the car is pretty much stripped down. Also prevents water, moisture or even dirt/dust from causing any corrosion. There are more things to point out, but those are pretty much general knowledge and probably you already known about. Good luck!

I bought the trigger wheel from T3 as well as the pulley. I did opt to get the spacer from T3 as well, so I could mount the trigger wheel on the face of the pulley. @polaris2966

my setup is basically the same as yours, but there are some things you should absolutely know before you attempt to start that engine!!! -open exhaust ports means cold air will hit your valves almost immediately, which will be hot in mere seconds of running, you WILL bend/crack/warp/fuck up your exhaust valves and your motor will need to be torn apart in order to fix that -you have no radiator or cooling system in place, a 4age is not designed to run like that and its a fast way to fuck other things up -You seem to have your trigger wheel mounted incorrectly, the 4age motor rotates clockwise, so you've actually mounted the missing tooth 90 degrees AFTER top dead center in the current configuration. the placement of the sensor is irrelevant to this, as long as the missing tooth is 90 degrees infront of TDC, you should be okay, but your current setup has it mounted the wrong way. I'd double check with your sources just to make sure of this, but otherwise the setup looks okay. I incorrectly mounted mine but managed to fix it using the base offset angle feature with the nodiz. Anyway, I hope you can get this sucker running I have a pre-made ignition map that works on my 4age too if you want it, just reply
@TheBSRecord
@TheBSRecord 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for the comment and outlining a couple of things to check on the engine. As for possibly damaging the valves, you are definitely right about potential issues with not running an exhaust manifold. This crank was only a test fire and I don't believe the engine was on long enough to produce enough heat to cause damage to the valves. However I do plan on hooking up a header and cooling system before running the engine for extended periods of time. The engine is coming out again here soon, so I didn't really see a reason to hook up a radiator and manifold for the test fire. However, all of these components will be fully mounted before I try and balance the carbs and drive the car for the first time. As for the trigger wheel, I had it mounted incorrectly in a previous video, but adjusted it before I attempted to start it in this video. I believe I have the trigger wheel in the correct position, as I set the engine to 90 degrees before TDC (rotating the engine clockwise manually) before reattaching the trigger wheel to the crank. So the missing tooth is on the crank position sensor 90 degrees before the engine is in TDC (rotating clockwise). If the trigger wheel was in the incorrect position, I don't think the engine would actually start (could be wrong). If you have an IG, shoot me a message and maybe I can get some pictures of your setup and compare? thanks again for tuning in commenting!

i followed D4A's videos to make carbed 4age but cant figure out how to tune it so it works, in its current state the idle is very close to 14.7 however if i drive it it goes very lean and has no power. as a result i will slightly richen the carbs which causes the engine to backfire and run at 9 or 10 afr in mid throttle. i have not changed main jet or needle and only pilot jet and screw. i dont understand how going between a #50 jet to #48 can change the idle from 12 to 14 and mid from around 11 to roughly 18 i seriously regret carburating my 4age

@gboghindustries
@gboghindustries 5 жыл бұрын
Good progress! I am concerned about the way you have your fuel pump wired though. Toyotas of this era generally use a "circuit opening relay" (you could still use your SPST relay, just wired differently) that provides power to the fuel pump to prevent the pump running if you get in an accident & a fuel line ruptures. Google something along the lines of: toyota fuel pump COR to find out more. I don't know if the NoDiz has an output you could use or maybe your tach signal could work.
@TheBSRecord
@TheBSRecord 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man thanks for the info! As of right now everything is sorta temporary. I was looking into other fuel pump relay options online and found one used a oil pressure switch. Basically, if the engine lost oil pressure at anytime, it would immediately shut off. I think this is similar to what you are saying but obviously a bit different. I will definitely look into it though, you bring up a great point.

Having the coilpack behind the dash is a huge fire hazard. I would mount it behind the engine in the engine bay
@TheBSRecord
@TheBSRecord 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and suggestion. Unfortunately, it wont fit behind the engine. I originally wanted to mount it there, but it's a bit too thick. So if I mounted it in the engine bay, it would almost have to be mounted on the firewall, which I don't want. If I end up mounting it in the interior, I will be making a bracket that comes off the transmission tunnel, to keep it off of the carpet. I could also build a type of "firebox" around it, kind of like a battery box for trunk mounted batteries. What do you think?
@NPUTsReviewsandStopmotion

@@TheBSRecord i dont really see an issue with the box and mount idea as long the mount and box is a closed unit so sparks dont fly out if the coilpack ever goes bad. The end goal is to really only have the engine, brake booster, clutch master, and main fuse box mounted in the bay. Other than those items, everything else will be tucked, removed, or relocated. I am currently looking for the best way to run the coil pack inside the interior compartment or as hidden as possible in the engine bay. DO NOT RUN WITHOUT HEADERS YOU'RE GOING TO BEND VALVES
@TheBSRecord
@TheBSRecord 5 жыл бұрын
You are 100% right. Maybe I didn't make it clear in the video, but this was only a test fire of the engine. The engine was on no more than 10 seconds and once I turned the engine off, I actually stuck my fingers inside the exhaust ports to gauge the temps. It and the valves were only warm to the touch. In my opinion, the engine wasn't on long enough to cause any damage to the valves. I will definitely not be running the engine for long periods of time until I get an exhaust header and cooling system hooked up. Thanks for the comment and tuning in!

Yeah me too, I may be able to hook up something to the nodiz to get the tachometer working but aren't sure. Thanks for watching!
@polaris2966
@polaris2966 5 жыл бұрын
its absolutely doable! my setup is basically the same as yours and I've done it using a gutted relay. The relay you need is a 5 pin automotive relay, you should be able to get this from O'Reilly's for cheap connecting both battery power and the tach output of the nodiz to pin 85 on the relay - MAKE SURE THE WIRE COMING FROM THE BATTERY IS FUSED, I used an inline 10a fuse and its given me no problems. pin 86 to the tach signal wire coming from your engine harness

I haven't decided on a exhaust manifold yet. I have some in mind but they are expensive lol. The engine bay will be getting shaved shortly so the engine will come back out anyways. Thanks for watching!

Well...you get a thumbs up for commenting :D I agree, the music is too loud over the engine start. I guess I missed it while editing, but it is what it is and there is nothing I can do about it now. I'm just taking it as a learning experience for better edits in the future. Hopefully you still took away something from the video. In any case thanks for watching!

@TheBSRecord

Thanks for voicing your concern and commenting on this video. Like I said before, I am new to this and are learning as I go. So I am happy when someone comments on things I may be doing wrong. As for the location of the pack I am not 100% certain where I want it. I will be relocating it out of the engine bay to somewhere else, whether that be under the dash or somewhere on the outside of the car. Keep in mind I have only test fired this engine and have not driven it yet, items like this will get sorted out before I actually drive the car. With that being said, can you explain the dangers of running the coil pack under the dash? I am genuinely curious about this. If mounted under the dash, it will not be laying on the carpet as depicted in this video, but mounted off the ground and more than likely placed inside a metal box to keep it as safe as possible. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
