AEA 2023: Garmin PlaneSync

PlaneSync is Garmin's new wireless system for remotely communicating with its onboard avionics. It utilizes the new GDL 60 LTE/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth unit and the Garmin Pilot app for loading nav databases, checking fuel and aircraft voltage, offloading engine data and viewing the aircraft's location on the airfield. It was showing the system at the Aircraft Electronics Association International Convention and Tradeshow and Aviation Consumer Editor in Chief Larry Anglisano took a look at it with Garmin's Jim Alpiser.

I bet an adult beverage that the fine print contains language permitting Garmin to extract data from your aircraft and to share it with whomever they so choose.

There is no free lunch. I bet they are giving themselves unlimited access to all your telematics just like the auto manufacturers. Data is an asset and big tech companies don't share it unless it benefits them.

Cirrus has had this functionality for a while now, nice to see Garmin with a retrofit option. I know a lot of Bonanza owners who are probably drooling over this.

And in the Cirrus, it’s been draining the battery as the router stays alive when it shouldn’t

I’m imagining the target market for something like this is someone who has the aircraft hangared and attached to ground power while hangared.

@RomansFiveDotEight of course that plane is hangared, but it's not that common to have ground power attached 24x7, would have to check what the POH sais. In an individual T-Hangar maybe, those are rare here... doesn't matter, our own Plane is Avidyne only, and I replaced Garmin Pilot with SkyDeamon because of the inferior software quality outside of Garmins favorite mobile platform Apple iOS, that is irrelevant outside the US.
