Welcome to another installment of our AEA Sessions, featuring Mitski, the talented New York-based singer-songwriter. In this session, Mitski performs three songs from her 2016 album, "Puberty 2", showcasing her ability to explore a range of textures and tones with her guitar and voice. Visit my website for more: aearibbonmics....
Alone with her guitar and washed in a warm, orange glow, Mitski delivers dynamic performances that explore a range of texture and tone. In ‘My Body Is Made Of Crushed Little Stars’, she sings of youthful restlessness while her guitar roars with energy and ferocity. In contrast, her words of somber sympathy in ‘I Bet On Losing Dogs’ ring most true atop her delicate finger-picked guitar playing.
In these sessions, Mitski’s voice and guitar come together to create singular, evocative moments that linger in the mind. To best capture these moments, we rely on the simple, but effective combination of the near-field N22 and far-field, stereo R88.
Both Mitski’s vocal and guitar cab are recorded by the near-field NUVO N22, while the stereo R88 records the room. All tracks are without equalization or compression and the reverb is provided by a plate reverb unit.

this song feels like self destruction. at least for me, i don’t even know myself if im completely honest. i dont know what i really want, what thoughts are mine and which are intrusive, what i really like. im so easily swayed by an outside opinion on who i should be. i feel fine because i pretended to feel fine. i can’t tell if i ever got over my depression or if i forced it down like a bad pill. sometimes i want to run away from everyone i know but to know who i am. “today i will wear my white buttoned down.”

i remember hearing an interpretation similar to this one, but it was about destroying your former self and molding it to fit in with the rest of the world, giving up on all your hopes and dreams to work a lousy 9-5 desk job ("today i will wear my white button down") for the rest of your life. i resonate a lot with both thou

This song, screams of being gentle to yourself. My darling you are a forest fire that has burned bright and beautiful and horrendous. Let yourself stop smoldering. Let the embers die out in the rain, and give more love to the flowers and grass that will grow back before the trees. Give the small things a chance.

using a forest fire to describe herself is so beautiful and sad. shes the forest, the fire, and the witness. shes causing pain, she's receiving it, and she knows she's causing herself pain but at she does is just watch it happen. its not just that, a forest fire is hard to put out, one witness cant stop it, shes saying shes gone to far in this pain to easily fix herself, even when the fire's out the damage is still done. and with the witness, shes implying the witness has done nothing to stop the fire, theyre just watching it, shes saying she knows what shes doing to herself is wrong but like ive said, a forest fire is hard to put out, she cant stop it and she could call for help, ask someone to help her, but she doesnt. she sits there an watches it, wishing her loved one could be there to comfort her. maybe if that loved one was there the fire would be put out? maybe theyd add to the fire, but at least she wouldnt be alone. maybe theyre the reason theres a fire. either way, now shes a fire that will continue burning until there's nothing of her left

i dont think people realize that she refers to herself as a “forest fire”, which i believe means that she made a decision that was initially small at first which then spiraled into something bigger and out of her control. she caused the destruction but she can’t do anything about it anymore, so she has to stand and watch it helplessly as it destroys everything

I think the first verse is about someone finally becoming aware that all the rumination and self-destructive behavior that they partake in over someone else ultimately only affects them. The other person is probably completely unaware of the “forest fire” that you’ve set yourself on, you’re the only one who’s there to burn and to watch yourself burn. The second verse is hopeful because it’s someone pulling themselves out of that rut, or at least making the effort. We’ve all been there, right? :’)

Why astounded? The ribbon mics kick the shit out of any condenser that isn't a German classic. You need to spend 10k+ on a condenser to deliver a top end that a R92 will deliver at about $600 if you buy used. As the story goes a U47 will give you a huge low end but in my experience an AEA R44 will give you a bigger, more robust low end still (I have one). Some other benefits of ribbons are they're low sensitivity and low output so you could, if you record at sensible levels, defeat most room conditions. Another unknown fact is they take almost endless amounts of EQ. Both digital and analogue. I kind of hate digital EQ but you can get away with it with ribbons. It's not all roses however. They are dark so they suit bright singers better perhaps (to tone down the brightness). I'm not sure they can match the likes of classic Neumanns when it comes to certain instruments. Those can make certain instruments sound almost majestic. They're not as airy as classic Neumann condensers. They're a bit dryer. I haven't as yet figured out how to match, say a U47, with a R44 in that respect. (I have both microphones) In my experience a R44 will give you everything a U47 will give you except the air. And you'll have to EQ it to get to that U47 thing whereas the U47 is just perfect without anything. (Of course it goes without saying that this is voice specific.) Ribbons are the underappreciated value for money gem that will get you to that 15k+ classic Neumann territory on the vocals. And almost any AEA ribbon will do it. I've owned the R84 and I own the R44 currently. They will both get you there with some EQ but the R44 is definitely my recommendation. The CE is fine. YOu don't need the extra shiny version. If you don't have the money for a R44 then even the R92 will get you there. The N22 sounds particularly airy so that might be an even better suggestion but I've never tried it myself personally so can't comment.
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees 6 жыл бұрын
Ps. The midrange on the classic Neumman 47 is also about perfect without any EQ whereas on the R44 you need a bit of EQ.

The constant dilemma it rises in me, yes it's about closing a chapter and starting over, but also about leaving behind something that might be significant, about giving up to live a quiet life. it's about settling down but what does that mean? living a clean healthy life? or a meaningless one where you've given up on your dreams and hopes? life update: currently in my junior year of studying a pre-medicine course. its really difficult, and whenever my expectations arent met and i receive another failing grade, i always come back to this song. really relatable when i wear that white buttondown labcoat everyday. but hey on the brightside, i finally made some great friends that make me feel welcome. and the guy who used to sit across me is now my bf. thanks mitski, i will love the littler things.

To me this song is how it feels reassuring yourself that you’re fine, you can do things as normal as everyone else and go on with your day even if you are at your lowest. You just have to do it, you just have to get over this hill that you can’t see the end of. You tell yourself that you’ll go to work and that you’ll go to sleep and you’ll do all of the littler things that don’t even matter anymore. You tell yourself you’ll keep going and doing no matter what even though it feels like the end

this song feels like a hug to the soul, a hug from my self to my self, a self that blames herself for everything it does, that says, that blames herself for every situation that happens around it, that cries because yes and why not, that doesn't let people approach so as not to be hurt anymore, who regrets trusting the people who made her so insecure, but today she watches herself burn, looks at herself and realizes that she's the cause of everything, that she's the one who trusts in others and not in herself, and that's why now is she herself who must be saved, it is she herself who must put out the fire caused. I love this song, mitski, thanks for such a masterpiece.

I am the forest and I am the fire and I am a witness watching it, and I stand in a valley watching it, and you are not there at all. I hurt myself and I’m the one being hurt by myself, I hurt myself and I somehow enjoy it, it makes me feel alive, and I see myself hurting myself and I can’t stop myself, and my mom couldn’t give a shit, because “I’m not physically hurting myself.”

In any other moment of my life I would have a completely different experience listening to this song. But in this moment and on my path out of the darkness this song, it spreads early morning light and hope throughout me. There might be tears in my eyes and falling down my face but I'm smiling and I feel unalone.

I always interpret this song through the lense of my life; a song about destroying yourself slowly but it’s gotten to the point where it feels out of your control completely. I don’t let people in anymore. Not in years. I give people the illusion of closeness, I say a lot. But I don’t say what I really feel or how I think. I have four friends. Only one of them really knows me and it’s because they’ve known me for over 5 years. My bipolar is destroying my life and while I know it’s me doing it, I feel like I’m just watching it happen. I feel so detached from my actions at this point. But I am the fire, I am the forest, I am a witness watching myself burn by my actions and anger. I’m the one who has a way of promising things. I’ve promised a lot to my family and to my few friends, even to myself. But it feels as though my hands are tied.

This song is so agonizingly lovely. It feels strained and repetitive, but in a good way. It feels like the repeated reminders of life during the process of growing up. Like the feeling of pain and destruction that only hope and desperation could give you, like the phrase "just hang in there!" or "it will get better." Overused, overdone, oversimplified. This song feels almost like going through a fever or heatstroke and it's so radio silence in your mind. You're so tired and your mind is all blurry, but you just keep going because what else can you do. The way she repeats "today I will wear my white button down" at the end of the song just makes me so melancholic but I love it, like, she's aware of the cycle in which she is living. A Groundhog Day style of repeating days, and the numbness that comes with it. I love this version of the song so much

This to me feels like self destruction. Destroying the things you love, and when you realize it, its too late, so you cover up what you did and put on your white button down. You try and act like you dont care about what you did but you do, and it hurts like hell thinking about it, but you have to keep on going.
