Step by step how to install Aeotec Home Energy Meter Gen5 with Homeseer or Smart Things Home Automation software. The first part of the video can be used for any controller as I show the electrical panel install and the second part of the video is specific to Homeseer but similar for other controllers. The biggest TIP when using Homeseer and including the node (paring) is to use non secure or it will not work.
I show everything step by step, so give it a view and please give a thumbs up and subscribe.
NOTE: Opening a electrical panel can be dangerous, these tips are at your own risk, only attempt if you are familiar. One should have their electrician complete the meter clamps if they are not comfortable.

Would this be the way to go to monitor what is pulling the most electricity in your home, or does this just give you stats on the entire home. I’m lookin to monitor which outlet are taking up the most usage to reduce the usage in those outlets. Thank you for the quick, but thorough video!

I'd like to monitor my dryer and that's it. Could I simply put a clamp around the dryer 3-phase power cord? Do I really have to go into the electric panel?

You can clamp anything you want it will work.

I use mine with Smarthings, and use an RGB light so I know when the Dryer is on or finished and other things. But I do like the graphing you have on Homeseer. But where do you manager to get 8 cents electric even in 2018...

If I remember back to those simpler days it was about 13 cents. I remember using the right number for my own graph and might have just used the default out of the box for the video. I moved away from Homeseer in favor of Habitat which is a much simpler platform. Simpler in one respect with a complete offering of almost every smart device driver included.

Hmm, interesting. Was going to buy one of these but not sure now. I thought it would send constant updates, rather than needing polling. Also attracted to it's ability to see flow direction for my solar PV but not sure how that would work in Homeseer.

It limited and so is homseer with it. Good for data collection and seer will graph but not ideal. I just use it to baseline.

Hi, I need information on your smart meter. I've read on several sites that it can be configured so that you can, for example, change the refresh rate of the values. I don't understand how to do it. My smart meter is connected to the Aoetec hub. I managed to configure everything on Smartthing and everything works fine. But I have no idea how to change the configurations. Do I have to do it from the Smarthings app? Do I need to do this by accessing the hub by IP address? How do I find the interface for changing parameters 101,103, etc etc? Thank you

That is a loaded question, it depends on what application is receiving the data. I am using Habitat to read the values and output that data to my dashboard. I am only looking at amps and watts with a 60 second refresh rate. The refresh rate is independant of the device as it's being pulled from the hub. Ultimately you should be setting up the device in the hub which is where you are including the Aeotec into it. It's done with the discovery process, there is a button on the device that puts it into learning mode and you do the same on the hub via the webpage.

Question, does it read power fed back to the grid in the case you have solar and over-produce energy?
@TechFan
@TechFan 5 жыл бұрын
I know that Homeseer has solar options but the Energy meter will read raw data in the direction of the clamps. So technically it could but it was not designed as such. So I am going to say it's not ideal for that application.

+Tech Fan thanks for the video. What app was used for the Samsung SmartThings connection to view electricity data?
@TechFan

In the video I used Homeseer to display the energy data, on SmartThings I followed this link community.smartthings.com/clicks/track?url=https%3A%2F%2Faeotec.freshdesk.com%2Fsupport%2Fsolutions%2Farticles%2F6000122372-hem-gen5-smartthings-device-handler&post_id=657526&topic_id=102997 if you follow the above you can output the data into a nice format and I had no issues with getting it to work, I just wanted an easy way to graph it which Homeseer offered. You can also google doc it into a graph using another script but I guess it depends how far you want to go.

+Tech Fan With the SmartThings or Homeseer connection were you able to get individual power consumption on each appliance and other devices?
@TechFan
@TechFan 6 жыл бұрын
Homeseer for sure can be configured for individual power consumption and I would think so can Smarthings but would take a lot more scripting. The downside of the Aeotec energy monitor is that you can only monitor two legs at a time (Whole panel). There are other products that have individual leads for monitoring breakers which is where you would have to clamp each individual hot wire for power consumption in the panel. So you need to monitor each circuit individually in order to get individual power consumption, but with that said with this device you can either monitor the entire panel (220/ 2) or two circuits. So in a long about answer yes you can use this in that manor but would be limited to two circuits.

What's with the raspberry pie. Doesn't this just connect to a zwave hub?

I used the Pi to house the application I am using to read the data. You can sync is to any zwave hub like Smartthings.

How do you determine what direction goes on what wire?
@TechFan
@TechFan 4 жыл бұрын
There is an arrow on the white clamps, one goes inward and one goes outward. In my case I grabbed my 2 main legs (120V each) which goes to each side of the bus to allow for 240V. It's in the instructions that come with it as well.
@ViperJoeB
@ViperJoeB 4 жыл бұрын
@@TechFan Thanks. I am aware of the arrow on each clamp. I also have two mains coming in. But it seems that both are incoming. Not one in and one out which would drive the clamp arrows to both go in the opposite direct. But bottom line, my Gen 5 meter doesn't read any power no matter what direction I place the arrow. I can hook up a Gen 1 Aeon meter with these clamps and I get a reading. Conversely, I can connect my Gen 5 Meter to the Gen 1 clamps (I have 2 200amp panels) and it will detect power but as negative values. Bottom line, the Gen 5 meter will not measure any power when combined with the clamps that came with this Aeotec Gen 5 package that I paid ~$100. Very confusing.

can you do tiered billing? how do you add in solar?
@TechFan
@TechFan 6 жыл бұрын
I am not sure about either, but Homeseer has packages for different more complex types of energy tracking including solar. For the device alone its only going to track the basics as I show in the video.

Nope, they do not come with any app or platform. You need to use it with a third party vendor such as HomeSeer, SmartThings etc.
