Eldorado, or El Dorado, is a small town in the Hume region of the north-east of Victoria, Australia, in the Wangaratta Local Government Area. Eldorado is 276km (171mi) from Melbourne the State capital.
The name originated not with the mining activity but with the Barambogie pastoral run taken up by William Baker in 1840-41. Baker renamed his Barambogie run Eldorado.
Even though the name refers to a land abounding in gold there was no gold found in Eldorado until the 1850s when it became a thriving gold rush town.
In 1859 the long running McEvoy Company began mining operations, which were not curtailed until the McEvoy mining disaster in 1895 killed six mine workers. Based on reports of the mining register, the boom mining years at Eldorado were from 1868 to 1876.
The remains of an old gold dredge can still be seen today. This is a large steel dredge which was designed and built by Thompson's Engineering for the Cocks Eldorado Gold Dredging Company in 1935-36. The Dredge was built onsite and operational in 1936 and used for dredging the riverbed to mine gold and tin.
The dredge received an Engineering Heritage National Marker from Engineers Australia as part of its Engineering Heritage Recognition Program. It is on the Australian and Victorian Registers of historic buildings.
Eldorado has three churches, a post office, a museum (1971) in a former school building, a memorial hall, a caravan park and a recreation reserve. The primary school was closed in 1993. Farming and orcharding are around the town area.

Great vid.. @13:45 - FYI that is called a Hydraulic sluicing monitor. The washed soil and gravels would be directed to sluice boxes to separate the alluvial Gold. Cheers

14:35, it might not be for excluding feral animals. i knew of an instance where they had troubles with a wombat often lifting a hut up off its foundations. 16:48, a bike servo. what fabulous idea.

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885 , this story happened 75 years ago. my parents rented a hut in a caravan park near noojee. at night-time the hut was moving up and down so they told the manager. he got a .22 rifle and shot loads of bullets into it until it put the hut down. they didnt have4 a torch so they couldnt see it. in the morning there was a trail of blood away from the hut. the manager thought the problem was over. the next night it happened again.
