Would you go with the GM I or GM II? Sony GM I: geni.us/16-35-gm Sony GM II: geni.us/16-35-gm-ii Check out Artlist & AI Voiceover: artlist.io/artlist-70446/?artlist_aid=keithknittel_3118&

I love the original 16-35 GM. In terms of zooms, it spent the most time on my camera. It wasn't a must-have upgrade but, I got a good deal on a slightly used GMII and made the switch. For me, the reduced weight and the improved corner performance were immediate benefits.

The focus motor on my V1 went out after 1.5 years use - definitely go with the mark2 for the extra focus motors (XD Linear Motors)

Sold my original 16-35 GM when the Tamron 17-28 came out. But this v2 seems to address the things I didn’t like about the v1. Will likely swap again. Thanks for the video.

Glad it was helpful, what was it like going from the 16-35 to the 17-28? Anything you noticed?

@@keith-knittel the 17-28 is much lighter, so that was a huge factor. I found the Tamron image to be a little more pleasing for my taste. And no lens creep with the Tamron.

Just bought the used GM I and have no regrets. Open Box from B&H with a 1yr warranty for 1500. I take large landscapes and no video so the features in GM II while being nice (especially weight) weren't worth that much of a price difference.

Thanks for this. I'm looking to buy a native sony lens for real estate photogaphy. I've been using a Cannon 16-35 f4 with a metabones adapter, but I feel I can get some improvements with a Sony lens, but I don't think I need to spend the extra money in the version II. even if I start doing real estate video too.

I'm looking to upgrade from my canon 16-35 f4 with metabones adapter to a Sony native lens for Real Estate photography, and maybe some Real Estate video in the future. It seams that for this it's not necessary to spend the extra money in the version II.

Fantastic video, mate. Super helpful. One question: did you have Focus Breathing Compensation turned on during the outdoor face tracking test shots? I couldn't see any focus breathing at all when you were putting the GM I through it's paces - which is the exact opposite to my own experience. I find the focus breathing of GM I is so extreme the footage is basically unusable - though I'm shooting on A7Siii, which has only just recently been given Focus Breathing Compensation, and I haven't had the chance to experiment with it properly. But the lack of focus breathing in the GM II is a big selling point for me, and I really appreciate you demonstrating it!

Sorry just saw this - focus breathing compensation was turned on, but now I’m thinking I should have turned it off! I’ll have to add (or actually remove) that to future lens tests, thanks for pointing that out!

@keith-knittel i finally got around to experimenting with the Focus Breathing Compensation feature added to the as7 iii in the recent firmware update. I'm happy to report it has completely fixed the breathing issue I was having with the 16-35 GM I. I can't tell you how happy I am with the improvement. Sony have just done themselves out of a lens upgrade!

This is the only GM1 lens I got. The other two 24-70 GM2, 70-200 GM2 I also have but the new ones and just LOVE em! The 16-35GM1 in my opinion is def worth keeping and not upgrading to GM2!!! And you know this!!! >;)))

The 16-35 GM I is still a fantastic lens that you can pick up for a really great price now, if you have the V1 and are happy with it, keep it!! Love hearing the different use cases

I was on the same boat, I shoot video and ended up getting the 24-105 F4. For photo the 16-35 gmii + tamron 35-150 + 50 gm 1.2 is a winner. With the lens options out there, the 24-70 is getting boxed out. If they did a 24-70 F2 that would have been better

The 24-105 is still a great lens, even at f/4. Used it this week! I haven't had a chance to use the 35-150 tamron lens, I need to try that lens out. I've heard good things, but it's heavy, right?

@@keith-knittelI used 24-105 for years Sold it for the 35-150 Tamron For me a run and gun and hybrid everything personal man this is been the best lens. I only wish it was wider like Sony. Image quality awesome and yes it’s heavy but works for me Canon IMO has the best 24-105 f2.8 ultimate one and done lens. My next buy is the 16-35 and I’ll be complete
