Great review! I've had several of these tubes, and was pleased enough with them at first. However, two have now failed. The first failure was in the rear tube, immediately after refitting it in a new tyre. On close inspection in water, it had several (around a dozen!) tiny holes, all on the rim side of the tube! The rim and rim strip are both sound, so I don't believe that was the issue, and there was no debris or grit inside the tyre, either. Schwalbe replaced the tube and that one has recently failed as well, after around 1500 miles. Both failures were when the bike was parked up, luckily. Like the reviewer, I found them impossible to repair, too, despite following the instructions for the Schwalbe glueless patches. The recent failure was worse than the first one, as the seal where the valve joins the tube had split, as well as again having multiple tiny holes on the rim side! There was no damage to the tyre (Energiser Plus 622-50) in either case. I've now switched back to a Vittoria latex tube in the rear, and I'll replace the front Aerothan (which has covered around 2500 miles without issue, so far) with a latex one, as soon as it arrives. The plus points of Aerothans are: they do roll well compared to butyl tubes (but still not as well as latex!), and due to holding their shape, they can be run well down into the tubeless tyre pressure range. I found they felt rock hard at 40psi, so I ran them at 28 front and rear. I run the latex tubes at 42/40 front and rear, and they are both faster than the Aerothans, and noticeably more comfortable, too. They're also £14 each, so a good saving, plus you can actually repair them. They lose up to 15% air in 24 hours, but I pump my tyres before every ride, so I don't find this an issue, to be honest. I suspect the Aerothans may vary in build quality? I also noticed that the Aerothan tubes for my 50mm tyres were under 1" in diameter once they'd had a little air put in for fitting(!), so they had to stretch to twice that to fill the tyre carcass once installed. Not sure if that might be an issue, as the unstretched material is very thin to start with(?), but as I ride mainly at night, I'm definitely through with Aerothan inner tubes :( I just don't trust them anymore, and at £50 a pair they're not cheap! As long as you're careful fitting them, I think latex tubes are a better option as far as performance upgrades go. In my experience, they offer similar comfort and speed to a tubeless setup, too.

Thanks for the brutally honest review. I was considering these tubes despite my concerns about the questionable valve stems, but now I'll definitely stick to lightweight butyl tubes and good tires for puncture protection and decent rolling resistance. As mentioned already, weight is not of ultimate importance past a reasonable point. It's a bit futile to obsess over a 60-100g difference between inner tubes, or 2-5w of rolling resistance for that matter, while riding around on a 10kg gravel bike with a rucksack that has 2-3kg of stuff in it, especially after eating a giant omelet and drinking four cups of coffee.

EDIT: Updated video here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZbPZWl-edpqnMk I hesitated before publishing this video because I like Schwalbe tyres and, in particular, because some successful, well known cyclists are saying great things about these inner tubes. I even sent a copy of the video to Schwalbe's distributor several weeks ago to check whether I was doing anything wrong, but received no response. However, it seems I'm not alone in my findings - Road CC also tested the tubes: road.cc/content/review/schwalbe-aerothan-inner-tube-277797

Most of the puncture protection we need (or rather *get*) comes from the tires and not from the inner tubes. A sturdy set of Conti Gatorskins or Bontrager AW is the better deal, I think.
@BC-wj8fx3 жыл бұрын
I tried one of these. On my second ride I picked up the tiniest piece of steel wire which made a hole smaller than a pin-prick. The tube deflated in seconds. None of the claimed "the material itself prevents sudden air loss". However I simply used a cheap standard glueless patch to get me back home. I wiped the tube as clean as I could and used the sandpaper in the patch kit. I am not sure how long the patch would have lasted because the tube failed days later due to rim tape failure, blowing through one of the spoke holes. I believe surface prep is very important for repair. I would carry some cleaning solvent like alcohols or acetone and also rough the surface with sandpaper. The tubes are "100% recyclable" but without a marking showing the material, I can't imagine the recycling plant undergoing testing or research to reclaim 45 grams (minus valve) of unknown material. They will surely discard it. If Schwalbe could name the material we would have more chance of repairing and recycling.

I used Tubilotos over 4,000km last year inside GP5000s with one puncture. Unlike your experience with the Schwalbe the bespoke Tubolito patch went on without a problem and has held since. Interestingly, and very positively, when I did puncture at speed the tube didn't let go violently like a butyl despite being holed by an impregnated thorn. They are not cheap and they are a pain to fit but, on balance, I plan on continuing with them.

I did buy 3 of these tubes and yes the cost did hurt a bit. I installed one on my road bike front wheel because that is where the less weight and forces are in comparison to what a rear wheel gets. I pumped both wheels up to 90 psi and I noticed right away that the front tire was harder than my rear tire was. I am using latex tubes in the rear. I use the Bontrager R3 25C road tires. I rode these for quite a few miles and kept stopping to let air out of the front because it just felt harsh. I ended up going with 100 psi in the rear and 80 psi in the front which seems to have evened thing out. I also carry one of the Aerothan tubes in my bag to use as a spare if I happened to flat. Overall using two Aerothans saves some weight and if the front wheel seems to be pretty durable I may stick the other Areothan tube in the rear wheel. I got burned on the new Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless tires because they had a road buzz at high speed on smooth surfaces that drove me crazy. Schwalbe sent me two new tires when I complained about it but those tires did the same thing. I went back to the Bontrager. I don't know why I decided to get these Aerothan tubes but I thought I'd give Schwable one more chance since the marketing hype was so good. I was kind of sad about your review but I'm happy you're telling the truth.
@alwaysanotheradventure3 жыл бұрын
I'm sad about it too. Have you tried sticking a patch on an aerothan tube, even if you don't need to, just so you know whether it could be repaired? I'd be delighted to hear my experience was the exception, but I fear not.

@@alwaysanotheradventure I have some of the glueless patches from Lezyne I could try. I have not purchased the type you used, thank goodness. You would think that the Folks at Schwalbe would have tested their own patches on the tubes and figured this out already. The fact that they continue to sell the patches doesn't give me much faith in their other products either.
@alwaysanotheradventure3 жыл бұрын
@@wasupwitdat1mofiki94 The instructions said regular glueless patches won't work, so best not. I still struggle to believe that Schwalbe haven't full tested and sorted this before release. I can hardly comprehend that me and the reviewer at Road.CC found something that a big business like Schwalbe did not! I wrote tot heir importer and had the link to this video hidden since January so they could see and respond to my findings, fully expecting them to say, "you did that wrong". I like Schwalbe stuff - their Durano DD winter tyres are on my road bike, I have Schwalbe on my gravel bike too, and I am utterly baffled as to why this isn't working. I'd love to post a follow-up to this video saying 'I was wrong'.
@wasupwitdat1mofiki943 жыл бұрын
@@alwaysanotheradventure If they respond I'd be interested in what they say also. Like I said earlier, when I had a problem with the new road tires they took care of me quickly and without problem. That is why I decided to give another chance. If these tubes turn out to be a disaster for Schwalbe it will be a shame because they do seem like a good company. One other thing I thought about and wanted to mention, I came from mainly a mountainbike background. When tubeless tires punctured and I patched the inside of the tire patches did not stick well there either. What I used to do was apply a coating of RTV black Silicone over top of the patch. Of coarse it needs a day to dry thoroughly but it never failed to work and never peeled off. Maybe this might work on these tubes.
@wasupwitdat1mofiki943 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking Schwalbe may have stopped producing these tubes because they show no inventory on their website. Also they show a higher price than what I paid at the time of my purchase approximately 6 months ago. They are about $40 US dollars now. Who in their right mind would consider paying that much. Most people would barely pay that much for a tire. What is Schwalbe thinking? I did have the one Aerothan tube I was using in the front go flat from a pinch flat and the damage was to large to even attempt a repair. I am using the latex tubes again and just carrying the Aerothan tube for the side of the road fixes.

Very interesting. Thanks for the review. I have been gravel riding the 10,550km Iron Curtain Trail and after about 6,000 km (on Schwalbe Marathon tires with regular tubes) had not experienced any problems. I switched to a different equipped with Pirelli tires and Aerothan tubes - had a first flat (rear wheel) after about 800 km. I could not find any meaningful reason - I just got off the trail and rode 100 meters on plain grass. I am not sure if the tires or the tubes are to blame. In any case.. I fixed the flat with a regular patch but continued my ride on a regular inner tube. Watching this makes me question if this whole experiment makes sense. The ride is surely smooth but at what price? Am a bit nervous riding with only this Aerothan as a spare... Otherwise I have always been extremely satisfied with my Schwalbe tires. Luckily, on the next 2,500km I have been OK so far.

I have Revoloop tubes in my fatbike. They gave a huge weight reduction on a bike that would have needed new rims to run tubeless. I'm happy with them but they do seem sensitive to grit left in the tire, something that doesn't cause an issue for butyl tubes. The patches are not the best solution to punctures, a drop of cyanoacrylate seems to be a more permanent solution. That's not going to work on bigger holes though, maybe crazy-glueing a patch on would work?

I paid 31.00 (USD) for my aerothans -- four times what I have paid for Schwable's standard tubes. I have used schwable's Marathon tires for 15 years. I do some 80% of my riding in Brooklyn and Queens -- the DOD could use this area as an industrial testing ground for inner tubes. Having said that, I have had precisely *one flat tire* in the last 10 years. Three weeks after installing my Aerothans, I got a flat tire. I was and am a pissed monkey. You decide. I have: Schwable is over-hyping the aerothans. Sometimes new isn't better, and I'm back to the standard inner tubes.

I run tubeless and carrying a bulky ( not so much the weight for me) inner tube in the saddle bag when I’d rather have the spare room for tubeless stuff, is where there’s super light but more importantly super small Inner tubes come in for me. With tubeless i only carry an inner tube for the worst case scenario, when ill have to use one if all else fails on my tubeless, so I really only need to finish my ride or just get me home. For this purpose, a $25 inner tune that takes up 1/3 the space and makes it much easier to let me get to all the other stuff i actually need in my bag when running tubeless, the tubolito or aerothan are the perfect answer. Basically, I don’t need the best puncture protection, I need the space and back up plan.

Seconded on the "honesty" quotient. IMHO, most self-adhering patches are dodgy and temporary as the patch is, afterall, a piece of tape... I have always used 2 patches for each puncture. The first is sacrificial and is meant to clean the tube of any 'parting' or molding compound of the tube AND the tire. The second, or occasionally the third, becomes the patch. Always carry a bit of tape, other than the "patch", to clean the tube. Don't trash the tube but use it as an emergency replacement in your seat bag. Enjoy! Your ride!

My repair experience with the similar but even more expensive Revoloops is better, but not by much. The revoloop patch kit comes with alcohol swabs (as does, I think tubolito's kit), and you use this to get the tube absolutely clean. I believe even the oils from your hand can compromise adhesion. The patches definitely stick, but at pressures over 40 PSI/4.75 bar the pressure of the leak channels under the patch to the patch's edge and the repair fails. Out of three patching attempts, only one was able to hold, and that one I kept clamped for 24 hours -- not practical for a road repair. I do not expect any TPU inner tube patch kit to work much better, since they all pretty much just give you the same kind of patch you use on other TPU items, like air mattresses. I think this technology is repairable in low pressure applications, like mountain bikes, but is essentially not reliably repairable for high pressure applications like road bike tires. Now for rubber tubes I have found glueless patch systems much less reliable than ones that use vulcanizing solution (essentially rubber cement with additives that form molecular bonds between the patch and tire). This presents a problem because increasingly LBS's are only stocking glueless patches. Possibly TPU might be reliably repairable with some kind of solution that works similarly on TPU to vulcanizing glue on on rubber.

I just went tubeless on my gravel wheelset and my road wheelset. I am very happy with it. Tubes for 5 pounds in my saddle bag if I would run into a unfixable puncture on the way.
@alwaysanotheradventure3 жыл бұрын
Tubeless is a great system if you can make it work for you.

I am a fan of Schwalbe and swear by Marathon Plus and I have never experienced a puncture and I ride 7000 miles a year. I am waiting for a Marathon Plus Tubeless to be introduced Tried other tubeless tyres and they are OK until you get a larger puncture and even though one can seal with various plugs, they never last. It seems to me the big mistake is to think you can use rubber that is not resilient just because they are tubeless

I'm a fan of Schwalbe tyres too Mike - those are Schwalbe DD on the bike and I use the gravel ones. Just a shame about these tubes.

I was going to give either these or the tubolito a go, but then your vid convinced me otherwise. thanks

There's a mix of opinion and experience in the Comments. People seem to like the Tubolito as a back-up to tubeless.

My dear vlogger, these inner tubes are NOT for RIM BRAKE wheels:-). Just saw this in another review.

Hi Philipp - thanks very much for taking the time to comment. I do my best to check details like this before posting videos, and if you check Schwelbe's Aerothan FAQ you'll find the following: 'All Aerothan tubes are approved for rim brakes'. It's here if you'd like to check for yourself. Thanks again for commenting 😁 www.schwalbetires.com/aerothan/

No chance I'd pay that much for them. And at that price you better be able to patch them a time or two.

Jings! As a cyclist with a more "traditional" approach to spending, I tend to buy tyres, not tubes, at £25 each😊

Fair enough!

No chance at 5times the price. Value pricing to capture early adopters and cash in early can only work if the product is 5times better

I def wouldn't use them, At £25 each, it's nothing short of legal mugging. I use maxxis ultralight 65g at £7 each, in comparison they are a bargain

Most of the cost is profit with raw material £1 per kilo. Manufactures should make it cheaper, sell more and recover the research and development quicker.

It’s such a shame and surprising from Schwalbe.

Personally I don't think any of these 'plastic' tubes seem to be repairable, or not a long lasting repair. I also cant really see the reason for their existence given the weight of ultra light 'normal' tubes, they seem to be a solution to a problem that didn't really exist, even more so in the tubeless era.
@alwaysanotheradventure Жыл бұрын
I think you're right. I managed to fix a Tubolito at home but on the road it would be a lot harder.

I think I put a slight bend in my rims when trying tubeless and I can't get it to stay airtight so went back to tubes. But not these. If you can get it to work for you then yes, it's the way for gravel.

There are lots of ‘plastic’ tubes out now and a lot cheaper, lighter and smaller. They’re worth it for touring for the space saving but won’t replace regular tubes for most things.
