Today in the second installment of my affordable dream car series, I am looking at the Ford Mustang GT. An American icon, the Mustang was finally launched in RHD for the UK market a few years ago - to coincide with the release of the sixth generation car. A big upgrade for the Mustang as a whole, just how is this car in my first drive of the V8 on UK roads?

This is the best "real world" review of the mustang on the internet so well done. It's interesting to read that when Ford Australia initially pitched for the Mustang they were given an allocation of 1000 units by Ford HQ which was over what Ford Australia thought they could sell. Some execs were worried that they would only shift 500 or so units in the whole model life. 5 years later they have passed 26,000 units. I had my first drive of a mustang a few weeks ago and was seriously impressed. It's not an M3/M4, it's a different beast and pitched perfectly at the market segment it's aimed for. Its fast enough, sounds great, looks great. It's special enough for the average bloke (and increasingly females ) to feel a real sense of achievement and pride in owning one without breaking the bank. It can be modded by people with OCMS (obsessive compulsive modification syndrome) or left bone stock. Either way it performs it's intended function of bringing a smile to the owners face. That's the whole point of owning a car like that.........innit.

@@chevalier_noir you have to compare to its competitors though. You’re looking at £60,000 for an equivalent power BMW, more for an equivalent powered Mercedes here in the UK. For something that sounds as good, looks good and has a lot of go it’s a bargain compared to its competitors. I know the Australian economy is different to the UK, cost of living is 40% higher but I’m sure the general comparison still works

I just bought a new RHD Mustang in the UK. Unlike many main dealers, Ford's will happily add various after-market modifications so I opted for front parking sensors, sports clutch spring, short gear shift and x-pipe resonator delete all of which I think were sensibly priced. The car is now returning for ARH long-tube high flow headers (that will amplify exhaust sound and power). This is a fun car drive and if you have children, at least two of them will comfortably sit in the rear so it is an immensely practical car to drive.

@@coopsnz1 The premium package is still extra, tho it is a bit different from the US one. In europe we always have the SYNC system with the big screen. Premium Package pre facelift was just better (fake) leather, cooled seating (or recaro bucket seats without heated/cooled seating) and more speakers, a subwoofer and different wheels. But overall you're right, the Australia & EU models are standardly better equiped and the price "difference" isn't really there after taxes and extras you'd pick anyways.

I lived in the States for a couple of years and placed an order for one before they came out, didn’t even drive one, read a great review and it said all you need options wise is the Performamce pack and that’s what I did. Not sure what that would equate too in the UK but it was summer tyres, stiffer anti roll bars and the 6 pot brembo’s up front and optioned the cracking recaro bucket seats. Owned for 20 month, 20K miles, 5 track days, the car was faultless and so full of character, I loved it. To an English bloke in the USA you need to do the V8 thing and so glad I did, if we had stayed over there a Corvette would have been next on my list. After moving back to the UK bought a 996 c2 which I love, more nibble than the Stang but miss that rumble and soundtrack of the V8, I love to see them on the road in the UK but have not chatted to any owners as yet. Great review of a car that oozes character and contrary to belief I think handles well, only downside in the UK to ownership is the Petrol prices. Keep up the great reviews on a superb channel.

To be honest the Mondeo can be a bit too big sometimes. I've got a Mk3 which is still smaller than the current ones, and I've parked it car parks where it was bigger than the painted bays. Most older multi stories are a problem. They were built for Austin 1100s , 105e Anglias and original Minis. It's also a bit of a pain trying to overtake tractors on country roads, and I wouldnt want to have it if I lived in a big city where parking is constantly tight.

Wonderful review, to me here in the States I have always thought of the Mustang as the poor man’s Aston Martin, not quite as pretty, not quite as fast and certainly no where near the price. Old MG’s and Triumphs had kit car interiors, felt as though at any moment the entire dash would fall off into your lap, but these beautiful lil Britts were about one thing, having fun! Even today when you see a MG or my favorite the MGB, the driver has a big smile on their face and that’s what Mustang is all about, I Love my giant F150 with all my heart, but I never smile when I see a Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, but when I see an old MG, Triumph, Beetle or any Mustang I smile, because I know the person behind the wheel is smiling. No car will ever approach the beauty of the old Jag E Type, to me it was just simply the most gorgeous thing ever to come out of a mind, inspired by God himself, but the Mustang is a very pretty car, that will hike up her skirt and run through a meadow with a smile on her face!👍

The great thing about the Mustang is that it's a very fun car that is relatively affordable. You are mostly correct that in The States seeing a Mustang isn't a special occasion. In the USA what makes a Mustang special, and gets attention, are the higher performance editions & years they were produced. The new coyote equipped mustang is impressive no matter where you see it.

Well done and well said and perfect car to start the Affordable Dream Car series! The spec on this Mustang is spot on! What a beautiful car! For me, the Mustang does not become relevant to own until Mustang GT with a manual transmission all the way up to the less affordable Shelby Mustang GT 350. The Shelby Mustang GT 500 is an AMAZING example of what a Mustang can be but it does not come in a manual and it is even less affordable than the GT 350. I would have LOVED to have that V8 growl and crackle every morning but right now, as a family man, I needed car with room for my family and the back seats in the Mustang are just not usable and even here in the US with my "2 car garage" there is no way I could fit a Mustang and another car in my garage :( For me this affordable dream car would mean I would need another house to put it in because there is no way I would park it on the street. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see that comes next.

I've got a 2018 Mustang GT myself and I think Jay hit the nail on the head again here. The interior is incredibly cheap and it built about as well as a crisp packet but it has so much character and theatre about it. Everyone seems to love it! I had, in my youth, a brand new 1966 2+2 Mustang with the 'hi-po' 289 engine and 4sp stick. I paid about $2600 for it out the door, and loved it for a couple yrs. before I had to move to an uncertain job 2000 miles away and decided to give it to my Mom and just keep my motorcycle for my new life in CA. I wish I had it now, cause it would be worth about the same $ as the one you were driving here. I've had the pleasure to drive a friends ecoboost 2.3 with Mountune upgrades and must say "that" is the version I'd buy if I were buying a newer one. The feel of the more balanced weight dist. with the same power as the V8, makes it feel much more nimble, not to mention the fuel economy. It's not as important to me these days to make lots of noise, even on my MC.

Many car companies are seeing declining in sales and need new standards so they could be profitable, if you see world wide for 2019 only Kia/Hyundai and Toyota made some profit other manufacturers are going down. When they force us to go electric their cars sales will go up to the cealing at least the first 10-15 years.

One thing i'd also say is Ford fitted terrible (and dangerous) Pirelli P Zero tyres to the 15-17 model year cars, they are downright scary in the wet when cold. The 18+ ones have Michellin ones which I've heard are much better. Seems a minor criticism but doesn't give a lot of confidence in a 420BHP RWD car when the tyres start to slide just pulling out of a junction on a cold day. Otherwise i'd truly recommend one, i take my son to nursery in it and the boot space is more than ample which is a nice almost surprise too.

Anyone who owns the current Mustang owes it to themselves to get Koni's Special Active dampers. I test drove two Mustangs back to back with and without the Koni dampers and the difference was huge. It completely transformed the ride and handling of the car. The standard car had a very harsh ride especially the rear, and like Jay has said, also a bit floaty as you push on. Meanwhile with the Koni's the harshness was completely eliminated, but itstead of it now being soft like you would expect, it actually maintained a reassuring firmness (as opposed to being jarringly stiff like the original) and had much improved body control. There was some turn in understeer I experienced on the standard car. That was fixed with the Koni's. I also felt like I could flow with the car through the bends and down the road as I had more of a feel for the car and a trust in what it was doing at any given moment. With the harshness gone you really gain a confidence in driving the car as it doesn't get upset over bumps anymore and the feedback from the road is much purer. So yes the Koni's make the Mustang more comfortable and gives it more body control, but the key takeaway here is the confidence it gives you in the car. If you enjoy driving these cars like they should be driven, that is the one thing that will make you enjoy it the most as you can fully use the car without being scared of it. Usually with suspension upgrades you expect some compromises, but with these dampers it improves every single aspect of the ride for every different type of road that I drove it on. It turned the car from something I couldn't wait to get out of, into a car that I wanted to take home.

He should see the effects when I do the school pick up for my kids and their friends. Roof down, sun’s out - Huge smiles all round & everyone’s happy as. Here in the States, I see a lot of base-spec V6 solid rear-axel Mustangs. They seem to be daily drivers for people. But mostly, you see the GTs. The solid axel version are more common. But the 2015 refit with 4 wheel independent suspension are very popular. Saw a young man sporting the 2.3 badge on his Mustang. And he was with a group of young men showing off their Japanese tuner cars, in a parking lot. So, even though it's a bigger car, the handling and the turbo motor seems to appeal to the drift crowd. For a guy my age, 53, I'm really attracted to the GT Premium Convertible, with the 10 speed auto and the 3.73 Torsen rear end. I live in Texas, and the call of the Western highways seems to beg for a V8 rumbling through the canyons. No need to go nuts and race through them. Just cruise with that 10 speed auto. Should be epic with the top down. But, I honestly feel I'd enjoy a Lexus RC F with a sunroof even more. It's a much more refined and nimble car. But, if I decide on a ragtop, Mustang is the way to go.

this is the previous model 'stang, with the coyote 2 engine, no bonnet vents and rear lights straight not angular. the latest 'stang, 2018+ have the coyote 3 engine, it has a slight improvement in displacement, going from 4951.34 to 5037.63, and incorperates direct injection along with the port injection. an improved compression ratio plus a few other bits and bobs moves the power from 400lb-ft to 420 and 435hp to 460. am taking my '19 'stang for a new set of boots tomorrow about to hit 35000km and will be 12months old next month. the pilot sport 4S tyres that came with it are wicked, i love em and putting them on again, not the greatest longevity but sticky. i love the car, not much of a family car but very fun to drive. have hit only 1 'roo to date, was doin around 90km i spose as i got some break on before impact, the 'roo was pushed along infront of the car before peeling off to the left as i slowed. was expecting disaster but was mightly impressed when i got out and checked front end. the front end - nose cone and grills- being made of some plastic material all held up well. only damage was top grill split in the middle on the bottom, and broke some of the tabs that hold it all together, it basically absorbed impact and popped back into place, TBH nobody even noticed unless i actually said something.

Like every other Mustang, it really depends upon how you spec your car out. Opt for the Bullitt, for example, and you get a nice set of performance bits, several from the Performance Pack One: Direct and port fuel injection; intake manifold and cylinder linings from the Shelby GT350; Torsen limited slip differential; 3:73 gears; and six-piston Brembo brakes. You can also add the adjustable magnetorheological suspension system. As to the interior? A little tired of the "cheap" refrain, frankly. Base BMWs ain't that great in my personal experience. Neither are run-of-the-mill Hondas or Toyotas. The current generation Stang is on par with any of those, more so if you go for the premium upgrades...and the styling and presentation is better than any of them, IMHO, especially if you get the 12" electronic LCD instrument cluster.
