ABOUT
I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.
Video's you can find here that I enjoy creating include;
+ homestead & homeschool vlogs
+ homeschool mom day in the life videos
+ curriculum reviews
+ boho home decor and fixer upper videos
+ eco friendly clean with me hacks
+ grocery & + Azure Standard Hauls
+ Cook with me vids
+ big family living
+ adhd homeschooling support
+ open talk about living & parenting with anxiety + auto immune disease

@homesteadhomeschoolfamily Thank you so, so much for bringing God's words to remind me why I do what I do. Love for my family will concur any bitterness that tries to rise up in me. Thank you, sweet Jesus. God works in mysterious ways. Just a short time before I watched this video, I stepped outside to get some fresh air and talk to God because I was frustrated with my husband. I was in tears telling God I am just so tired and how much longer do I have to do this life. I literally, was only outside seconds when the words I heard in my head calmed me and brought peace to my troubled heart. I walked back inside as if not on my own, like being gently led back inside. I thought to myself, that's weird and also equally weird was my tranquil feelings. Your video was confirmation of God's words I heard tonight. May God bless you and your family. Have a beautiful blessed night. Love Melissa in the mountains of Virginia. 🙏 ❤

I appreciated to hear this today. It hit my soul. I have been struggling with learning basic kitchen skills and our homeschool family is so busy. We are consumed by people who call on us to help them. I have neglected myself and never seem to have the time to enjoy my life. Perhaps its the season of life and the age of my children. But I needed to hear this. God bless you.

Two comments….. 1)your words at the 20+ minute mark really hit my heart. ❤️ Thank you! 😊 2)When I find myself home alone & struggle with a difficult jar lid, I put a rubberband around the lid. It gives me the grip I need to remove the lid! I learned this from a widow lady who didn’t have anyone in the home to help her.

These ideas for stretching food and meals were wonderful. Most of them I have not seen or heard of. I just did our huge shopping for the next few weeks. Having these ideas to use and try are a relief. As for the sourdough info that was interesting too. I do a lot of baking on the weekend and that is busy, I do feed mine everyday but its to use for muffins, cornbread, scones... and such. I use my regular sourdough for anything even the recipes that ask for discard. I have just found that we eat so much that I don't ever have any left. I do have to write these things down in my planner though because I have to double or triple things and the math sometimes get a bit crazy... LOL

We had the same meatballs and sauce in my family. My mom called them porcupine meatballs for the way the rice stuck out. None of my friends had that recipe in their family so I knew it was special! Thanks for prompting the good memory I have of that dish. I think I need to pull out her recipe and make some!

I’m so happy to hear that someone else doesn’t do the sourdough discard thing! I did in the beginning but struggled with the idea of throwing it away. I leave mine on the counter and feed it every few days when I remember to. I’ve had my starter for over a year and have no issues with not discarding anything. When it gets to that point I have it coming out of my ears, I use it somehow. Either pancakes in the am, or bread, or I’ll make pizza crust and make pizza for dinner. I have a bunch of sourdough recipes in all areas of cooking and have no problem at all with my starter. It’s healthy and never lets me down.

This video is one of the most informative cooking videos that I can relate to, as my family is continuing to grow and being on a small budget. Thank you so much for taking time to help educate and inform mothers or whomever is watching. What I love most about your video, are the empowering words from God that you shared. Sometimes it can be so easy to feel like a provider and less of a person, if that makes sense. It's easy to lose yourself, or feel under appreciated. Thank you for adding this devotional to the video and sharing your wisdom. Though, I would not want anyone to feel under appreciated, its nice to know that at least I'm not alone, and that, as always, God has everything in His Word, just for us, no matter what we are facing, and that He has us in His Hands. May God bless you and your family. Shalom shalom.

I'm glad this helped you! Noise pollution is real, and families are noisy. It's okay to take a walk or lay down to rest to give your nerves a moment to decompress and your allow your mind to recharge. It takes families awhile to learn to give you a break though, you have to train them to give you a few minutes. It's all part of learning to work together. Eventually they learn a rested mom is better than a worn out overestimated one!

I watched it while cutting veggies ahead for stir fries and "waste" for vegetable stock along with having a smoked turkey carcass slow cooking in the oven for broth, waiting for the rendered turkey skin & fat to strain after breaking down and cutting the meat off one of the 2 whole smoked turkeys I purchased yesterday. It takes some getting used to. But literally zero discard. I keep mind in a small glass container in the fridge. I make sourdough 2-3x a month. And I refresh my starter every 6-8 weeks maybe. I really enjoy it

I’ve had my sourdough starter for nearly a year now and I still don’t feel comfortable with it. It was so helpful to see how you prep your dough in bulk! I searched for a “weekly sourdough routine” video when I first started with mine and there just wasn’t a lot on here. I would looove more details or a video showing how you actually add ingredients or whatever you do to turn that basic bread recipe into the other things you mentioned. Like is everything you put in the big bin just the basic recipe, then day by day you put some back in the mixer to add ingredients as needed or is that something you do from the beginning? Thanks again, love your videos!

I haven't really seen until real recently that I have been struggling with bitterness, wow. ( Feeling like I'm having to do everything, not knowing how to do anything, lol sounds I might be bitter with myself. Is that a thing??😆🤦‍♀️) Thank you so much for putting this on here because it's encouraging me Big time, I really needed to hear that. 💜👍

Yes, it's a thing! It's easy to take on more than we need as mothers, and it's really easy for the family to kick back and let us. They need training, and reminders, especially if we've been doing more than our share. It takes time and patience but eventually it pays off as new habits are formed. You can do this! Make sure you give yourself and family grace and time! Love and Lord will get you there!

We've had two of them about a year and a half, they are still going strong! The only thing is we found they will freeze items if they are on the 3 settings. Sometimes in some parts of the fridge things still freeze on the 2 setting, but 2 is what we run it on. If the power goes out they need to be reset before they freeze things in the back! Did you see the link in my description of where to find them?

I love channels that cook from scratch. Since we don’t eat meat, scratch recipes are so much easier to adapt to our needs! I love the idea of front loading with prep since I have to work outside the home and don’t want to compromise on meals for the sake of convenience/time. And finally, I want to start making my own sourdough! We save a ton eating potatoes all different varieties and ways as well as whole grains and beans/legumes. Also, seasoning can transform a dish that has otherwise similar ingredients into a completely different dish😊

I often add bone broth powder to my sauces to thicken, or nutritional yeast ( gives cheese flavor)… have you tried cooking lentils in place of rice to expand the protein….also adding mushroom powder ( I make my own because my husband doesn’t like 16:56 their texture) I cook for a professional couple that likes vegan meals. I’ve made bbq tofu that was actually very good and added some ground meat to it and salsa. ….hubby never noticed it in burritos. There’s a recipe called WWII sausage Pattie’s…..made with lentils…..made without meat added to it and again with some to pass the non vegan critic….homemade gravy over it and over fried potatoes made it a winner. I made a lot of powders because hubby is not a veggie eater and they’re a good source of nutrition and thickeners…..sweet potato or squash powder in Mac n cheese or Johnny Marzetti ….winner Veggie pancakes with dehydrated ones in it and homemade syrup….winner I send your videos to Facebook in hopes young moms and dads take a look and learn…thank you I don’t use store bought potato skins because of the chemicals on them….some potatoes seem to have a lot of green I have to peel off……our stores organic are very high priced and researching organic has said not all veggies are truly organic in pureness.

Let me ask you though what happens when you are hurting because you are now alone as a single mama and you are very very ill without help. They say there is so much help out there. No it seems like there is so much out there. People always say they are willing to help, but when it comes down to the actual help, you don’t see actual help and you become that person that is resentful and bitter . What do you do then?

I've never been a single mom, but I would start with your community resources. I would also look for a larger church that you could become a part of and see if they have any programs that can assist you with basic things around the home if you are unable to do them. I hope this helps!

Not crazy about potatoes?!?! Oh no!! I am. haha. Your husband hates zucchini?? Oh no! I never really knew how broth for certain broths were made, so thank you for that. Agreed about the church stuff. I returned to my church last week, but it is a very small church of about 30 members only, and half of them watch through zoom haha. I cook a great Shepherd's pie. Loved seeing how you make it! I also find throwing out half of the sour dough to seem wasteful. I have seen it a few times. So you don't really have to discard anything? I still haven't experimented with sour dough yet but want to because I am still in the note taking phase of it. The hardest part for me seems to be STARTING the starter. . .people don't explain it well enough for me. . .and then I let it sit for a few days and then add it to things. . .you explained it so far the best I've seen, but I don't know why this bread seems the most confusing to me of any bread. haha. The way you talk about your dough, you can see how skilled you are with it. I need to find your cracker tutorial. I make pizzas. May your family have a lovely week!!!

Yes, with potatoes I guess you could say I like my sour cream with a sprinkle of taters, lol! I would love to know how you make your shepherds pie! Please share? Nope, you don't have to discard anything, I never have! Sourdough can be confusing because factors in the home, like temp, can play into things. I'll have to backtrack and take a look at the video. Thanks. I make my shepherd's pie with beyond meat because I don't eat beef (I eat fish and started eating chicken again when I got pregnant just over a year ago). I use carrots, thyme, onions, veggie stock, potatoes, and make it the typical way otherwise. I use oat milk or milk with my potatoes to make it a bit creamier.
