I got in on TRMs lizardskin Neutron in DLC 20cv and I have to say its definitely my favorite knife that I own right now..some things that I think are worth mentioning.. 1. The milling on these contoured lizardskin scales is understated and underrated 2. Hilary gave you their rockwell target but numbers can vary from batch to batch and when you put them to a belt for a custom grind it can also effect the rockwell somewhat as well.. its awesome that you test the hardness(I need to get one of those testers!!) But rockwell can vary from batch to batch so to get an accurate average youd need to test more than one 3. While larrin does state that 63+ is ideal for magnacut hes also on record stating that edge/blade geometry is more important for esge retention specifically than the steels individual properties and trm has some of the best blade geometry in american made knives that ive seen( not for nothing not even spyderco is hitting the cryotreated rockwell numbers so...yeah😅 4. Youve passed me in our race to 10k😂 love what youre doing with your channel, keep up the good work
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
Regarding #3. I literally quoted Larrin in my last video saying that, yet seconds later he emphasized how important the steel’s balance is. Unfortunately the industry chose to focus on the former and not the latter. #2. My result is within the margin of error for batch deliverables. She was neither opaque nor apologetic about it and I interpreted that a sign of a great company: they know how good their product is and are not about to start chasing the Reddit mob’s fleeting popularity.

Another great video!! I have a few of the TRM knives and I love them. I don't have those scales yet though. I do not like deep carry clips and sometimes have difficulty getting the knives out of my pocket. I spoke to Marianne about the possibility of having lanyard holes in the scales and she said her customers do not want/like them. Many of the KZbinrs and commenters say they like the deep pocket clips because then no one knows they are carrying a knife. Who are they kidding? I find that to be a ridiculous statement. As long as you're not committing a crime with your knife, no one really cares that you're carrying one. I see so many people in my local convenience store who are carrying pocket knives. Why? Because they are working the types of jobs that require them. I've never seen anyone in the store call them out for it.

I have a shadow when I bought I asked the hardness of 20cv since it is important as is magnacut and they told me between 61/62, I have not measured but after sharpening so many steels of known hardness I can say that they met the requirements and it is a better option than magnacut since It retains more and the design of these knives is not for rough use but absolutely cutting. When they launched the magnacut I asked the hardness and they confirmed between 60 and 62, and a nice debate started on Instagram. Greetings from Argentina.

Really enjoying your analysis-oriented content. I have tried lanyards myself (including the genuine Sebenza one) and I think they are a bit off-putting appearance-wise. To me they just don’t “flow” with the knife, if that makes any sense. However, I agree that they make knives easier to retrieve from your pocket, so I can understand if that’s a benefit you want or need.
@kadenmoses2180

Loved the review and testing. Question for you. I just got an atom in MagnaCut (probably around the same time as you) and I was hoping it would be an hrc of 62-63 for edge stability because I like to put low angles on my knives like 16 dps. So I was disappointed in this test result. Assuming mine is the same as yours, do you think 61.5 hrc would hold a really keen edge without mushrooming or folding the apex?
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
@@kadenmoses2180 I hear you and those numbers are important. Yet, if you are as avid a sharpener as am I, you can immediately recognise how masterfully the secondary bevel is done on this blade. Yes, the quality of the edge is much harder to quantify, but it is comforting to know that, for your money, you are getting an edge that was not overheated, not “banged out” in a hurry, not done by a novice. All of these intangible factors go into the edge stability. So I would choose this knife over any, say, Benchmade, even if the latter was smack on 62.5 Thoughts?
@kadenmoses2180
@kadenmoses2180 2 ай бұрын
@@CuttingBoardRx Completely agree that it is probably one of the best MagnaCut folders for the money. Honestly I just finished putting a 16 DPS angle on a fixed angle sharpener so at this point I’m just wondering if I should just take it back to 17 because of the potentially lower hardness than what I was expecting
@CuttingBoardRx

I wonder if this is due to their sharpening process. If they ask 64hrc from whoever does the HT, when they grind the edges on they likely loose 1-2hrc. This is a very common but unspoken side affect of production scale sharpening.
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
@shinedown394 not likely. Overheating the secondary bevel would lead to localized discrepancies in hardness. I tested it well away from the edge. Besides! A master smith who sharpened it (I am good but not as good) would not have made a newb mistake like that.
