I am in no way an expert but, hope to learn more from you knowledgable folks as time passes... That said, I'l never have a chance to remember any Grand Seiko references. A few follow-up thoughts in hindsight, I do wonder whether a watch that retails over £3000 can truly compete with the CW and Seiko. If I had another crack I'd probably propose the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer (polar obvs)... Alternatively, if I'm being honest, the Bambino smashes the pro out the park if we're truly discussing Look VS cost. Finally, I almost suggested my wife's Grand Seiko GMT SBGM221G - Yes, it's over £4000, but in my opinion it's on the verge of being perfect and could definitely demand a higher price. Thanks again!

@@reudigerrudiger6452 agree, the bands on these value watches are the weak point. However, strapcode has some fantastic steel bands for a variety of watches from Seiko (not affiliated, but the one I ordered in Oct 2018 is good as new).

@@4.20.69 I got a presidential bracelet for my SKX007 from uncle straps (sounds like an American uncle who sells guns in the hood 😂) and it really was a great quality bracelet. My wife got me a Seiko SBTR013 JDM as I am lacking chronos in my collection and despite the rubbish bracelet, it sits well on the wrist and is secure despite being made out of tin foil 😂

I had a cocktail time mojito and a skydiver and they are absolutely beautiful watches, even the bracelet that comes on the skydiver was ok for a lower end Seiko. I sold them in any case, a bit too smart for my usual rig of jogging bottoms and hoodies so they never got any wrist time 😂

Agreed, any time a friend asks me for a starter watch I recommend a Bambino esp. open heart variant. It's a simple and reliable piece.

@Redbeam My first mechanical watch after wearing a smartwatch for years was a red dial Kamasu and with a bracelet upgrade, I opted for the cheaper Long Island Watches bracelet vs Strapcode, with solid end links it's amazing. I have about $250 spent for watch and bracelet, and it's well worth that.

@Pedram Tajeddini The only thing I recommend is getting a bracelet with solid end links from either Long Island Watches or StrapCode. Granted, you can use any straight end bracelet but the end links meeting up to the case just looks so much better. They are about $60 for LIW and about $100 for StrapCode and from what I understand the factory bracelet is like a 4/10, LIW is like a 7 or 8/10, and StrapCode is at least a 9/10 so both are well worth it.

I based my entire collection when I began the watch obsession on sort of a rebellion against the Swiss watch world. Hence my collection of 19 watches are ALL Japanese. From modest Casios to a few Grand Seikos and everything in between. My work life included a great deal of time in Japan and I've come to appreciate their relentless pursuit of time keeping perfection. Seiko in particularly offers a great single brand opportunity to build a nice collection. At the end of the day the value for money is nice. I just added a Grand Seiko GMT quartz that I think comes closest to a 1 watch collection. That's in spite of having a GS Snowflake and commemorative Porco Rosso Studio Ghibli Seiko releases. I've tried to pick my favorite 3 watch collection from the 19 but it changes every day! 😁

Great discussion. The Tudor BB Pro exceeds on several levels: the dial and case design, the functionality, the clasp and the movement. The Presage is all about the dials and finishing; the straps and the movements are just OK. The Bel Canto is everything if you like the design. All fantastic watches. James is lucky to have a father-in-law to support his watch collection. Forget the couch and buy a Bel Canto!

Much like the ChrWard, Farer also makes beautiful watches with great attention to detail and just like ChrWard, they're british design and swiss made. Their latest chronograph is just gorgeous. Seiko's offer incredible VFM imo. I picked up the Seiko 5 GMT in the sale and it's been on my wrist ever since. My Bel Canto is on the way in the next couple of months (can't wait for that) and I am probably going to end up biting the bullet on the Tudor BB Pro - it's my fav watch of 2022!

CW has really impressed me this past year with the Bel Canto(Already pre ordered the Cielo from this year's collection) and I am thinking of picking up the C65 Aquitaine GMT with the white sand dial and blue bezel. Amazing looking watch for less than US$2000.

The Seikio Alpinist range offers great value. I'm especially taken with the 1959 lookalike reissues. A GADA watch which can be dressed up and yet offers 200m WR. Like the Presage range people often bypass them in the rush for divers so it's not unusual to see them discounted below their £650ish price.

Many Michel Herbelin models shoot way above their weight, you have to feel and hold them to see. Baume & Mercier is also a brand that feel much more quality than in pictures.

I think that Tudor GMT actually looks much more cheaper than it is. Must be simple steel bezel and boring plain dial. I like regular Black Bay and Pelagos more than Rolex, but Tudor can't compete with Explorer and GMT Master when it comes to looks.

I’ve walked past too many cheap mall stands with oversized bezels. I can’t stand them for that reason. Any expensive dive watch with a fat twisting bezel looks like some sleazy, washed up coke fiend wears it.

I believe the discussion about Explorer IIs that are vintage and cost more than 30k is about the 1655, which the BB Pro vibes on. You probably saw more recent vintages of the Explorer II.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian here, but I've NEVER thought that Rolex watches look good. I've always thought they look basic and boring. Same goes for Tudor and for A LOT of Omega's though they at least have a good 20% that are attractive and interesting. So their insane popularity REALLY baffles me, I really don't understand what people see in a Rolex to go ahead and buy one. Anybody else the same as me? Because clearly the general watch buying public REALLY disagrees with me but I'm hoping some people do... I'm not even talking about how overplayed Rolex is, how Expensive they are, how ridiculously difficult it is to get one, etc, just purely in terms of appearance, they're as boring and basic as it gets to me.

There are levels of watches looking more expensive than they are. For me, Orient watches in the $120-300 look impressive and appear to the average non watch enthusiast to be expensive watches. I would never buy a $3,000 watch when I can own 15 or so Orients for the same money.

Grand Seiko are mostly overpriced and have crap bracelets. Seiko Presages are reasonably priced with class movements and dials. Presage is better.

I think our definition of “cheap” differs😂😂😂 most of us don’t live in a world where we’d consider any timekeeper with a four figure price tag”cheap”. The cheapest quartz would do a round the world trip…lets be honest, most of these are status symbols, unnecessary luxuries. If one must have an expensive watch, the no brainer seems to be a Black Bay Tudor but I’d prefer the dive model. Also the cheaper Seiko which I think looks as good or better than the pressage is the much much cheaper solar drive model. Sapphire glass, lovely dial and really really great value cheaper at half the price but doesn’t look it. That or the stunning Seiko recraft with S/s bracelet and sunburst green Dial….how can you guys keep missing this model? The same predictable models keep coming up on these videos…there’s a reluctance to buy anything from cheaper lines or God forbid, a non mechanical or non automatic😂😂😂😂😂

The year began and something is already making it better than the entire 2022. Amazons AMPL23X came out and it's such a great thing no matter where you come from. Everyone can participate and it is making many things easier than they have been. For example I live in France and this is something no one else could do for me here, if I just keep sitting on my toes for the next 5 years I'd simply go broke, now I can change that.
