Musical nail to the freakin heart. Also, GENTLEMEN is one of the great album covers of it's time.

The fact that as good as this song is with Dulli on vocals, he was able to set his ego aside & recognize it would be even better with Mays on vocals makes the claim Dulli is a genius undeniable.

Glorious & fucking stunning. This shit puts modern music to shame. The Whigs always will be a level above .

I met Dulli once at an after-show party in Dublin during the late 90s. I drunkenly confessed how much this song meant to me when I was in my late teens. "I want that song played at my funeral" I enthusiastically proclaimed, before he nervously excused himself by saying he had to go to the bar....

I saw her come out on stage at a Whigs show in Columbus in 1994. She is absolutely spellbinding. This is a perfect song. From a perfect album. Congrats to Greg and crew for keeping this tradition alive.

Anyone watching this... go online and buy the final album "Nature Film" from Marcy's band Scrawl. They put out a lot of fantastic stuff but that album is really the one to have. It's a must have in a "holy shit I slept on this?!?" way.

Couldn't agree more, been my favourite ever song since I first heard it in the early nineties. First time I've heard a live version and they don't disappoint.
@Pharmakon710 жыл бұрын
ghostly606 I saw them do this in 98 on the 1965 tour. Marcy's version is full of hurt and remorse. The backup singer who did it in 98 sang it much more soulfully and seductively. Amazing how a singer's approach can change the meaning of the song! I see them next Thursday and hope they play it again :)

a fantastic mix of sinister and pain served up like only the Whigs can. The grossest display of underrated that music has to offer, the Afghan Whigs not only titillate lyrically, but their melodies are astounding. I have to listen to most song twice just to filter the depth. shame on the music industry for not making this band a household name.

Lyrics: You hurt me baby I flinch so when you do Your kisses scourge me Hyssop in your perfume Oh, I do not fear you And "slave" I only use As a word to describe The special way I feel for you You look like me And I look like no one else We need no other As long as we have ourselves But I won't cry about it Every time you get obsessed Every time I came undressed All ugly thoughts are gone I'm sure we'll all be friends I'll try to break your back You'll try to make amends Curse softly to me baby And smother me in your love Temptation comes not from hell but from above And there's blood on my teeth When I bite my tongue to speak Zip me down, kiss me there I can smile now You won't find out ever Hurt me baby I flinch so when you do Your kisses scourge me Hyssop in your perfume Oh I do not fear you And "slave" I only use as a word to describe The way I feel when I'm with you If I have to lie about it every time I came undressed
