I have also heard that NZ AFL is slowly growing and they have clubs etc, so maybe doing more games there will grow the game even more. I think scrap China and India and try out the USA and UK as there have been many fans in those countries after learning about AFL and reacting to it/ learning about it. Also, those countries will likely be more interested in going and watching the game/ learning about it.

I remember Freo playing in Cape Town. The AFL wanted it to be a regular event with the possibility of working in the poor communities to develop outstanding athletes that could convert to AFL. Fremantle wanted that to be an area where they could develop players and an interest to the code. Didn't work out obviously.

Teams don't want preseason cup matches. You could do 2 teams in England preseason. But then they have a long flight back to Australia and recovery. I think a gatherround preseason in Canberra and country NSW may be more important.

@@BDub2024 First: The Challenge Cup Trophy was contested after the official season was over after the Grand Final, I've done extensive research on those matches and the teams that played and won those Challenge Cup, it was like trying to find needles in many haystacks. Second: Miss the Pre Season Cup, loved that a piece of Silverware like the NAB Cup was up for grabs, the Best Player got the Michael Tuck Medal and the winning club got a few hundred thousand dollars prize money. Now its just nothing but boring practice matches with nothing to fight for. Tell you what I would love to see the Gather Round concept be moved to pre season, really kick off the footy festivities with a bang, a tournament across Canberra and NSW like you suggested, say best of two or games kind of what the NRL currently does with its pre season challenge, they crown a champion and award the champion team $100,000.

@@thequartersfooty I agree NSW Canberra could benefit from a Gatherround preseason. But you couldn't have the 2 WA teams playing in it due to excssive travel during season. So I think it will remain 2 external practice matches per year.

@@BDub2024 Absolutely, but I would love to see the Pre Season get interesting again. Going through all the pre season comps post 2013 its an interesting list of teams that topped the pre season ladders over the years from The Hawks, Brisbane, Fremantle, St Kilda, West Coast, Richmond, GWS. And it had me thinking over the years, what it they did like all team play two games a pop, 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, percentage, but the twist is bonus points for how much a team wins by like 1 point for 25+, 2 points for 50+ and 3 points for 75+. Given the boom in Australians heading to Japan, a match at the Tokyo Dome could be an interesting experiment / tourism event. The Japanese Baseball (NPB) season starts its preseason in late February, so maybe aim for a pre-season game around 3rd week of February…. 🤷♂️ or do a reciprocal deal…… Tokyo Dome hosts a pre-season AFL game and the SCG hosts a pre-season NPB series the same weekend.

I lived in Birmingham in 1999 and took the train down to London to watch the Hawthorn-Essendon game at the Oval. It was a weird atmosphere. Kind of like a party vibe rather than the more intense, parochial atmosphere at a proper home and away game. It was also weird hearing so many Aussie accents after not hearing many for a while. I remember they promoted one of the North American games (LA?) with players eating raw steaks. I think they were going for a macho/tough guy vibe. I also remember the Japanese game. The crowd reacted very differently to your typical VFL/AFL crowd. In particular, they cheered vigorously if the ball happened to hit the goal post.
