After Asia, this is the first half of a cycling journey across the African continent from Cairo to Cape Town.
NOTE: This video was down for a while due to the rascals in the music industry and their Copyright crime against regular people. The video is back but without the original music. I replaced the
Song: Kothbiro by Ayub Ogada (wonderful) with some Free KZbin one that won't last the whole video, thus the rest is silent. Sorry about this. I have no time to revamp it and reupload. If you wish, play the original in the background while you watch this one :)

Que maravillosa vida has vivido. Felicitaciones!!!!

Muchas gracias Jossue!

Can I do this at age 65? I exercise riding bike. My back is bad, but I can ride bike. With a light load I average about 13 Km's per hour, meaning one Ortlieb bag full weighing about 11 kilos. Would it be expensive to ship my bike to Africa or buy one there? I only have $683 US dollars per month on my Social Security. Thanks for such a great video!
@80lives
@80lives 5 жыл бұрын
ABSOLUTELY! You can definitely do this if you are decently fit. I've met lots of men above 60 cycling the world and they only get stronger every day. Much more than physical strength you'll need mental strength and most importantly: patience. You need to cultivate patience, with yourself and toward others. My budget for africa was around 3500 USD per year, so if you don't fancy lots of luxuries and you enjoy simplicity, I'll go on a limb and say you can retire in Africa cycling with that amount of money you receive. haha! As far as gear goes, you will definitely need to take everything with you from home, unless you start in South Africa, in which case you'd be able to buy everything. Depending on where you are from this can be more or less expensive. Just make sure that whatever way your fly into africa, you don't get screwed by the airline. Make sure you check the airlines policies for baggage and sports equipment. I flew a lot with about 75 kilos in total including the bicycle and I have never ever paid a cent, but it takes a lot of research, since airlines make it very difficult. I highly suggest you reading my full AFRICA Q&A article on my web www.nicolasmarino.com where you'll find answers to pretty much everything you need to know. There's also a full article for bicycle gear too. HOpe this helps!

@@80lives Greetings Nicolas! Very nice of you to take your precious time to answer and your encouragements! I will for sure go to your site. I will first, since I'm in the states, maybe go by bus once I'm in Mexico. Since I'm already in line with South America I thought I'd first return to a village I was in during a University study in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains with the Zapotec people, and to a small fishing village I stayed in on the Pacific coast and with the Lacandon Maya where I stayed, then through Central America to South America and all over that continent. I think instead of flying west, then I'll fly east maybe on a standby flight or cheapest way possible to Capetown. I better not try to describe everything... I heard vaccinations here can cost $1,000 and I simply don't have the money to do that, yet my immune system isn't top of the line either. I wonder if I could get the same Center for Disease Control "CDC" vaccinations in Mexico for much less. I guess one must have a universal return home airline ticket too, good for all over the world, right? I am in much better than average shape compared to others my age, except for my back issues, yet I can ride bike well if I just plod along at an easy pace. I also found out, being vegetarian, that all my arteries are clear -- cardiac, corotid and adjacent arteries (juggler?), even MRI of my brain, all good! I use studded tires and ride in the winter too. I've never gone on bike trips, yet I've hauled 60 lbs of groceries... in my nice Ortlieb bags. I wish I could bring my guitar, but have to give that up. I don't own anything, never have, but some books and a few instruments. Not owning anything I also don't have any debts ha! When my back was better I camped and hiked a lot in various wildernesses, and I hitched all over Europe when I was young and lived there for a year. Patience is a virtue and I felt I attained it when I became a "CNA" or "Certified Nursing Assistant". Too verbose once again ha! Carpe Diem!

@@mwj5368 It's more than a pleasure to share and help in any way I can. You'll enjoy the articles in my web since they have a lot of info you want to know. Also, aside from the articles, there's the blog in which i share all the stories on the road. Funnily enough, it's been 3 years since I finished the trip and I haven't finished with the African stories, but I'm getting there :) After your description, I can tell you that Africa is the place for you. You just simply fall for the simplicity of life and the warmth of the people (it's all not rose coloured though, they can seriously get in your nerves, but my memories are 99% love and affection). Don't get vaccines in the US, or any medicines for what it's worth, never, ever! Forget it. If you start in Cape Town, get them all there at a fraction of the cost in the US, or if you start in Morocco perhaps you can fly to Spain first and get them there. Morocco can be a good place though for vaccines and all. Both Spain and Cape Town can be good places to get a decent bike and at a reasonable price. Of course Mexico is sure a better place for vaccines! In any case, hope you enjoy the preparations :)

Hi, Nicolás. Let me ask you something: how was for you cycling across the whole Africa, once you knew that you might be in contact with wild animals while in a bicycle? Do you ever got afraid of being "attacked" by a lion or something? I do want to do a travel like you do, but i'm afraid that cycling in Africa would be a quite dangerous because of the wild life around me. How did you dealed with that? Thanks for helping me!

It's a fact of life in any African adventure, and I go very remote so yes, I came in direct contact with them sometimes on a daily basis. I even had up to 6 lions surrounding my tent at night in Namibia, so you can imagine, it can get really scary sometimes. Well...there are plenty of precautions and measures you can take in order to avoid getting eating or killed by them but in the end, you never know, the risk is always there. I can also tell you that there are much worse dangers than big animals. For example, snakes and scorpions, but to be honest, the worst danger isn't any of them, the worst danger is malaria mosquitoes, black flies carrying riverblindness worms, and so many other tiny bugs that can ruin your life and kill you in a much faster and efficient way. This video shows only the first half of Africa, i'm working on the second half video now, which was much more extreme than what you see here. Drop me an email or write me through FB if you'd like to talk at length .

+Nicolás Marino Oi Nicolas, obrigada por me responder!

Hi, I am preparing for a trip cross Africa next time. May I ask you how did you deal with all the visa problem? Are they long enough for cycling across the whole countries?
@80lives
@80lives 8 жыл бұрын
mmmm ....what do you mean how you deal with them? Like you would with any other visa in the world. One at a time, researching about what you need depending on your passport, find the tricks to get the difficult ones and so on....no real mistery. Most of them are long enough to cycle across, but some are not long enough if you truly love a country and want to spend a long time in them.

Vietnamese passport I assume? Well....don't worry, it's just a matter of doing your homework. It might be a little harder but not impossible.
