Not daily, at least not that I've noticed. When I first arrived here, 23 years ago now, it wasn't uncommon to get some looks. I rarely took offense or felt uncomfortable about it as it was always due to curiosity from what I could tell. The first few years I was here I actually got stopped on the street twice for conversations about my ethnicity and told how nice it was, as an African American, to have me here. I found that to be quite refreshing after being occasionally feared (people clutching their belongings and locking their doors) in passing back in the US... 😏

as a kiwi, I would have to say just to smile and perhaps a "hey" as you walk might help?.. it really is simply because the lack of African originated people here. And kiwis are typically very approachable, so we wouldn't think your being snarky in reply by making basic contact like I said above..
@unhooked255 жыл бұрын
Sweetie 48421: If and when you go to New Zealand which is where I'm originally from 50 plus years ago. Anyway I'm a white man, when I took a trip back there after many years of living in Canada, people would stare at me when they heard me talk because they thought I was an American and at that time 1987 there was some political upheaval over New Zealand being anti nuclear And the United States (president Reagan) and even Britain (PM Thatcher) were putting political pressure on New Zealand over that.However, I was about to confront one or two people who started getting a little snarky with me, but believe it or not, there own family and friends came to my defense and put them in their places. So if people do stare at you I wouldn't take it too personal because there could be many reasons for that and their not all bad. Cheers.

It's more of a "whoa! Cool! That's happening HERE!" Right? It's so funny, because I'm from south Russia and year before last I went to a little village near my town to go to the beach. There were a few dark skinned guys and girls - I imagine they were some students from Africa, as one of the best unis is in my town and does get some international students. But oh, goodness! They had ALL the attention on that beach! Kids and people were running up to them, wanting to take pictures with them. They were trying to enjoy the sea and I remember looking at them standing knee deep in water, with a couple of people coming in and taking pictures with them. I felt bad for the situation, as I can see how that could make someone uneasy.. But I also understand the psychology behind the scenario, how these people that live in a little village, who maybe never have even seen people of that dark of complexion. Obvs, unless you live somewhere where there is some diversity, you probably don't know anything about how to be more gentle in approach to not make people feel uncomfortable..and Russians in general can be a bit overbearing in approach. So.. Yeah. It was quite a situation. Luckily, the dark skinned teens didn't seem to mind it all. They were together, so maybe that helped to feel comfortable being bombarded by all the excited locals? They were all smiles and didn't show signs of being uneasy. I was a bit uncomfortable FOR them haha.. But also from what I've been told, people from Africa don't experience racism in as sensitive of ways, as from the US (of course due to US's insane race dynamics and history) and my understanding of how uncomfortable that situation could have been is based on the US To be fair, though, I know in Asian countries people are all over you and want to take pictures if you're white, so.. 🤷🏾♂️ That's just humans, I guess..

I identify as an AfricanNZer (we actually exist) and so do my sons - but we are a minority within a minority. When Africans stare at you they are trying to figure out where "in Africa" you are probably from, (most likely - we all do it). Its also a habit that is very common in Africa. It threw me when I went home to visit my family and everyone stared LOL!! Like your Tapa cloth in the background btw!

As a black male who has lived here in New Zealand for all my life. I can definitely say 100% of the time, IT IS NOT RACISM. New Zealanders stare out of intrigue and fascination, most black people they see is through the media so seeing a black person in real life is like seeing a unicorn or a celebrity out of a tv screen. Although this is speaking from my own personal experiences and I have never really experienced any outward racism, maybe the odd micro aggression with a jaded older person but not really. But then again I am signed with the top modelling agency in New Zealand so maybe looking like a black male model could also be a factor in why people stare at me?

There are not a lot of African or African Americans in New Zealand so firstly there is the novelty factor to account for people staring. The further south you travel like in the South Island you will see far greater proportion of white people ( too cold haha) . If you were in Auckland the largest city you could be mistaken for a Melanesian person, Fijian , Vanuatu , Solomon Islands because of your hair and colouring and you wouldn't stand out particularly in South Auckland with lots of other brown people. I would think the main reason is that you are very attractive and probably dress relatively well. NZers are notorious for how casual and scruffy we are plus we like to wear black a lot. Ive noticed African Americans often wear bright colours like Polynesians which adds to the lookability..

It’s weird how many people are commenting attempting to discredit this woman’s experience. She said she’s never experienced racism in NZ but that doesn’t mean people don’t stare out of racism. A simple google search will show you that African refugees experience a ton of racism and xenophobia in NZ. Knowing that it’s not uncalled for when a black person who has experienced racism their whole life to be guarded and weary when people stare. Yes sometimes it admiration but let’s not act like these behaviors can’t also be tied to racism because that simply isn’t true. It makes no sense for people that aren’t black to dictate when a black person is and isn’t experiencing racism…

@JacqueElias3654 жыл бұрын
I understand your fear. First, I would say moving to a new country is an experience like no other. You cannot replicate it. It forces you to develop parts of your character that you wouldn't do otherwise. I think getting used to a new culture and surroundings is good for us all. With that said, you know your children best. If they are dealing with mental health issues or other complications, a big move is going to be an even bigger adjustment for them. Many children I've met that have moved from overseas are coping well. Some take more time to adjust than others, but kids, for the most part, are resilient. The adults I have met struggle more than the kids do. The key is to build relationships with people. Second, New Zealand is amazing and the people are very friendly. It is a very different culture than the US, but there are enough similarities, like language and other elements of Western culture, that you can hook onto to find rest from all the newness. Hopefully, that helps.

If I saw you on the street unaware of your culture I would think u r Tongan\samoan, your hairtype is common in south auckland. But also most of us don’t mean to be rude, mind you you’re very pretty so that could b the reason but yeah.

I would say she looks more Fijian in the islander context.......I have never seen a Tongan or Samoan that looks like her.....

Jacque Elias: I've lived in Canada since I was only 8 years old, but New Zealand is where I'm originally from. However nice to see you are there probably like a few other African American's, that is aside from a few African English people I met the last time I took a trip back there, but I'm a little surprised you get stared at because I thought you would just about pass for a Fijian or a Pacific Islander which New Zealand does have a lot of, that is aside from the native Maori people, well especially an indigenous Fijian, because they look very similar to Africans, they also have kinky hair and there is quite a number is them in New Zealand. However, it's nice to see that you are venturous. Why? Well I have been to the U.S. a few times and while being there, would you believe me if I told you that I ran into a couple or so people who don't even know Canada exists much less New Zealand?.....Well anyway, you having now spent some time there, I was just curious as to what you think of the native Maori people and their culture now I'm quite sure you have had some exposure to that. I would really like to know if you can find the time to reply. Oh by the way, I hope you like the meat pies. Cheers!.....P.S. If people stare at you, well although staring is not considered polite, I would take it too seriously, reason being is there could be many reasons why they're staring, that is aside from you being attractive like a few others have mentioned in the comments. All the best.

Don't think they're staring because you're black it's because you're hot!

I'm very much interested on visiting NZ for like a 2 month stay. If I came could we be friends? I'm a sister too. Would love to have company there. Once this whole Covid virus is a thing of the past of course.

I know the feeling. I got those same stares when I visited South Africa. I guess us AA stand out from other blacks from other countries. Lol. You stated that your husband is white. Is he white from the USA? If so, then it's probably not common to see a white and black couple in New Zealand compared to the USA. I would feel more comfortable visiting Nee Zealand or Australia compared to Russia. Lol. Both countries have less blacks, but I think Russia is more racist. Thank you for the video.

I feel like you're giving new zelanders too much credit. I grew up in New Zealand and I'm african and I got stared at too. It's not a nice stare.
@punkybrewstar836 жыл бұрын
Mostly, I'd say that this is true, but it depends where in Auckland you are. I think the only reason anybody would stare at you in Mt Roskil, Onehunga (represent), Otara or Papakura, is because you dress hardout, and your hair and stuff. Wellington, especially central, is pretty fucking white, just saying. But yeah, I mean, have you been to the South Island? People would be sweet, but in some places you might actually get a gasp, instead of stare lol. TBF a lot of places, they stare if they don't recognise you, because they literally know everyone. Also church.... depends which ones, but if you're talking about the ones with TV adverts and Jesus bands, then.... you might stand out :)

Meh, in the American backwoods I get stared at all the time from people with more nefarious beliefs about us. I’ve been to Central Asia where the locals wanted to take photos with me because they’ve never seen a black person before. No sweat, I’ll take it. And your fiancé’s jokes? That ain’t cool.

For a developed nation, I find it incredibly rude that people would just stare at others. There is simply no excuse for that!
