It depends which African country you are in. You can't generalize and say the entire continent has bad healthcare. Ghana seems backwards in most things. Pre-dosing and carrying malaria medication (Artemether) is an absolute MUST for any person visiting Africa for the first time from Western nations where malaria doesn't exist because they will have zero immunity to that potentially deadly illness. Any new visitor who fails to dose up with anti-malarial drugs BEFORE landing on African shores is liable to suffer a devastating first infection that could very easily prove fatal. Resistance to severe illness goes up after a few bouts of malaria.

Also, yes, the police situation. Thank goodness, whenever in Guyana and I come across any nonsense, I can drop names. We don't have the tribal system in Guyana, but if you are connected to high government officials, you can drop a name. I really hate the way in which police in developing countries try to squeeze money out of you, because it can leave a bad taste in the mouth of someone who is in a position to do good in that country. This is how folks get completely turned off, especially if you have to endure sweat hours trying to outlast the police in their moment of intimidation to get money out of you. That would really infuriate me, because my intention is to do good wherever I go, not to be subject to extortion and intimidation by a police force. However, I do understand the socio-economic system and the concept of "survival", and you just have to pray that things working out in your favor when these things happen.
