Elephants are very united and family ties are what makes them strong. How many times have I seen the matriarchs guided the flock to the good pastures. In addition to being the largest mammals of the earth, they have a phenomenal memory. I saw a report of two sisters who found themselves after 20 years. It was a moment of rare tenderness. I like them so much.

I know, don't you want to just hug them at that age!? The large ones are also touching to observe because of their intelligence and the care they take to protect the babies in such gentle ways! For an animal so big and powerful, and a bit clumsy, it's amazing to watch them keep the little ones out of harm's way due to their great curiosity.

I think you are rushing things a bit, elephant calves should nurse until the turn four, then weaned off milk, three years is to soon even if they can survive without nursing. Weaning a calf less than four will have detrimental effects, smaller, weaker, less endurance, not as smart, more susceptible to disease, and reproductive problems. Additionally, although some calves learn to drink water through their trunks at three months, it's more like four to five months in most cases. Fully grown bulls and cows will drink 300 to 400 liters of water daily, and eat 300 600 pounds of foliage, bark, and grass. Well done though.
