because inherently life is fragile and fleeting, for millions of years on this planet it has been in a constant arms race to evolve better defences and offenses while also sustaining itself. millions of years on a planet where resources are finite and everything is trying to kill everything else. pain is what prevents organisms from needlessly allowing itself to become injured and death is an inevitable end to all living things. some things are small and only live for hours, other things are large and can live for centuries, but in the end everything dies eventually, sometimes earlier than it's lifespan normally is. its just an unfortunate truth. we are all just bubbles of water trying to stay alive long enough to produce other bubbles of water. ultimately, life is just a strange and as of yet unique to earth phenomena that seemingly arose from random chemistry and very specific temperatures on a relatively average rocky planet orbiting a relatively average star.

They couldn't rescue the calf. It was too weak and would have died from stress. The mother would also be incredibly stressed as well and could easily kill the crew and the rescuers. During these situations, we have to let nature take its course.

Frank Geeraerts 1. Humans are always held to a higher standard by fellow humans. If you truly believed that it’s hypocritical to apply things to other animals and not humans, why don’t you neuter or spay yourself? After all, if you have pet, I assume you’re perfectly okay with, or at least agree to, neutering or spaying your own pets? 2. Just as humans look out for humans first, other animals will also care about their own (species’) well-being. When was the last time you saw a lion saying, “I am not going to hunt that gazelle because I realize that the leopard wants to eat it, too, so I will yield to the leopard”? No! Parts of this comment section is showing what happens when you let feelings take over instead of logic and facts. To all the people saying to give them water or food its best that they didnt. 1) they are there to FILM and not to intervene unless it was caused by human meddling. 2) That would put the lives of the crew in danger. 3) the mother would protect the calf at all costs so the chances of being able to give it sustenance is small. 4) The calf would have died either way. The crew arrived too late. 5) You should not interfere with nature. We as humans do this enough already. Unlike dogs and cats, you cannot take care of these animals because they are wild. Just like how they arent allowed roaming free in cities because we are humans.
