"Baby, Please Don't Go" is a traditional blues song popularized by Big Joe Williams in 1935 and covered in the decades since then by numerous rock and blues artists, including Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy, Van Morrison, AC/DC, and Aerosmith. Muddy Waters recast the song as a Chicago-blues romp in 1953. The Rolling Stones named their band after one of his songs. They made a pilgrimage to Chess Records to record several tracks for their 12x5 album, including the hits "It’s All Over Now", "Time is on My Side", and "Around and Around". Muddy Waters was curious about the band that named themselves after his song, so he went to the studio to meet them and they hit it off well. They had known each other for 17 years when this show was recorded.

That was fun. Never saw this, have seen them doing I'm a Man, probably the song or 2 after this one. It's great seeing Muddy Waters late in his career, still the big beautiful voice.

Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield - what a cool name) was a huge influence on the Stones and many other British rock and blues artists. As noted below, the Stones named themselves after one of his songs, "Rollin' Stone". The first time I saw Muddy was in Tucson on March 28, 1979 as Eric Clapton's opener (as a rock and roll history aside, Clapton married Patti Boyd at a nearby church the day before). The second and last time I saw him was about a year later at Choo Choo's (aka The Night Train), an intimate Tucson club where music royalty such as Frank Zappa and Billy Gibbons would hang out when they were in town.

I was fortunate enough to have seen the great Muddy Waters a little before this performance, when he toured with Johnny Winter…….. one of the great things about being an old man is having the opportunity to see many of the “super bands” from the 60s and 70s before they became big… sometimes no ticket required, maybe a $3-$5 cover charge at the door…. Boomer ramble!

Very nicely done Fay. The title should have been: the young "Rolling Stones" in a bar in New Orleans. Even today, everyone who knows the classics is celebrated there. Great.

New Orleans? That’s the Checkerboard Lounge at 423 E. 43rd Street in Chicago. Co-owned by Buddy Guy at the time. Behind Muddy is John Primer, his last musical director. He still performs around Chicago. Never saw the Stones at the Checkerboard but did sit at one of the tables with Robert Plant.
