Being a modern man in Africa comes with all kinds of expectations and pressures. From being the main provider for their family to having few outlets to express their inner fears, DWs Edith Kimani speaks with a panel of men in Nairobi about the struggles they face and what 'masculinity' means to them today.

Just recently found this channel, and after watching several episodes with Edit as facilitator, I am blown away with the quality of the entire production. Let me just say I am an old white man in Texas, who helped raise three African American boys to manhood. Their fathers were in there lives, but given the challenges black American men have to deal with, I was honored to be able to help with these boys and their sisters. The discussion in this episode is something that men around the world need, and I hope many men find this to watch. What they say is not at all limited to African Kenyan men, but is in many ways common in the USA and I am pretty sure just about everywhere. That these men would open up here the way they did really was heart warming. I hope Edith can help even facilitate more such discussions, for such "therapy" is greatly needed.

It is also not true that pre-colonial women had no voice. Many pre-colonial culture valued your power not by your SEX but by your AGE. Therefore older women and older men had more power and voice than younger women and men.

I can only imagine how the dating market has changed in the homeland. In América too many people chase fame and tho Gives a warped perception on what kind of life you can live when you’re happy with a love.

What dating market?😂🤣😂 You mean legalized prostitution? Access to the most attractive women is to the highest bidder, dating has been extinct for quite a while in most parts of Africa. Dating is currently an economic activity, can’t afford to invest & you stay in the 🥶.

The role of the male for everyone of humankind can be summed up within two statements.: The man preserves his heritage through his race. The man protects, honors, and utilizes the nativity of his women. Without developing these aspects, which all men ought to have in order, not one family can expect to advance society as the entire foundation of a people will be left vulnerable to the misuse that is afforded to despotism.

We Afrikans MUST look to our ancient history of abundance and power over our own lives, our men and women were far more FREE than we are now through colonial times… we are living the colonisers reality NOT through our own Afrikan contributionist /Ubuntu philosophy

As an Black Queen Born in U.S.A.,I agree 100%,we will never be Free, and Free Thinkers as long as we try to be other then Our Fathergod given self,I have a Friend from Africa who live here in U.S. who has Destroyed Her Beautiful Dark Skin with Skin lighting Cream and now She has to be screened for skin cancer, and She has Dark and light patches all over Her Body ,it break my Heart because She is very Educated at a Top U.S University and she is very Intelligent,I said that to say this we as Black Kings and Queens, whether we are from the Motherland, the Diaporo, the U.S.A.,or anywhere else in the World we need to walk with Our Heads Held High, with Pride in Our Fathergod given Blackness, and do not try to Change it for Anyone,or for Any Reason,WE must Love Ourselves.(PEACE AND LOTS OF LOVE,TO ALL THE KINGS AND QUEENS WORLDWIDE).

it's the same discussion over here in germany.men hood n women hood is a category tht is intersectional. I share more with tht Kenyan presenter than with a man hete. btw, this provider narrative is quite new. most of the time in history women were much more valued n included. women are also gaslightd too. they live un the same patriarch strucure. girls grow up withäh tht idea too. thts why most of them play their role n out pressure on men toio.

Good behavior and teamwork is worth WAY MORE than money. A man can have riches and still abuse you and abandon your children. I prefer collaborating and mutual respect. The problem with patriarchy putting all your eggs in one basket. Gender roles hurt men too obviously

"obeying them not denying their conjugal right" like....yikes. A wife is not an on demand prostitute okay you don't have a RIGHT to sex you have a privilege, an opportunity, privileges and opportunities must be earned. Earn it by being loving, good kind, warm, being your best self.

But if I make my own money then I take your masculinity as a provider, but then if you can’t give me what I need as your stay at home wife then we have friction. Who cares what people say. If it’s a true marriage…. Money is made on both sides and you come together and make more money. Who cares who makes more. Such rubbish this is.
