A cesarean section, or C-section, is the surgical delivery of a baby through an incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus. The procedure is typically performed by doctors when they believe it is safer for the mother, the baby, or both.
In December 2022, a viral TikTok video claimed that successful C-sections - ones in which both mother and baby survived - were performed for hundreds of years in Africa, before the procedure was common in Europe.
“The baby survived, the mother recovered well and they were given herbal treatments to promote wound healing," the TikTok user said.
THE QUESTION
Did African midwives successfully perform C-sections before it was common in Europe?

Any step by step documentation shared? How did they repaired the uterus? Abdominal wall and skin? What sutures did they use? What was given to the mother to survive?

Yes, detailed notes were taken. You can literally just click on the link they provide and then scroll down to the article link. The book scans are there. The pregnant woman was given banana wine to keep her comfortable. The surgeon washed his hands with the wine and then with water. They cut her open, took out the baby, massaged the uterus, and removed the placenta. Then used a hot piece of iron sparingly to close certain areas and used metal spikes and some string to close her up that were slowly removed days after the procedure, reapplying new bandages every time pins were removed. They also added a paste to the belly and then a grass matt on top. The wound was completely healed in 11 days. He reported that the woman seemed completely comfortable during the procedure. There's much more detail in the notes themselves but that's the gist.
