It triggers Africans in the diaspora because they don’t understand the cultural meaning and importance behind it. I’m sure most of the outrage came from African Americans because we have lost a lot of traditions and heritage because of slavery. I thread my brother’s hair like this to stretch it and also reminds him that it is something that the ancestors did and that cultural things like this cannot be lost.

Problematic. I work with ladies who do this. The problem is Africans pride themselves on TIGHTNESS and most of the women who come to get their hair done are mostly BALD because of doing this and the braiding all their lives. The stretching causes breakage. That’s why people are triggered.

Well then the issue is the tightness….not the actual hairstyle…..right?
