I'm sure the US wouldn't allow that to happen even though Hawaii was clearly taken by force from the natives by Americans and was actually an independent country before being annexed by the US. Taiwan has always been part of China and inhabited by Chinese people. There's no such thing as a Taiwan country. @sola4393 to be technically correct, Taiwan is just one island of the groups of islands still controlled by the Republic of China after they lost the support from the majority in the civil war. Taiwan, Penghu (aka Pescadores), Jinmen (aka Kinmen / Quemoy), Mazu (aka Matsu) are the main island groups still administered by the old Chinese Gov. The new Chinese gov failed to capture these island groups mainly because a) they were weak in naval power b) they were busy fighting the Korean war with the USA led UN forces c) the USA was militarily supporting the old gov. Both sides agreed to cease fire and vowed to reunite China in the future. Over time, through the UN, the new China was recognised by most countries as the legitimate representative of the Chinese people.

❤ Let us all pray. May there be .. No more wars, n more destruction. Disrupted peoples lives, human life being lost, or rather being wantonly n unjustly snatched away .. just like that. We all hope President Trump if the US n his team is for a world at peace. We are not each others enemy at all. N for the much lauded, much respected exMSNBC news host MEHDI HASAN. Pls pardon you really sounded ill prepared, not present, n lame on this one interview. I hv always admired your quick sharp wit n bulletproof response in most instances. Taiwan has all of its knowledge and history written in Mandarin Chinese. They contributed a lot to the absorption of modern Western culture into Mandarin China and to modern Mandarin China itself.

Wait a minute didn’t you all cover a story that china was “mess making” in Africa? Strategic ambiguity has always been the US policy. And always assumed Taiwan’s independence. Also Taiwan is the worlds largest microchip manufacturer

Actually, if we GO DEEPER family, this present government in China is losing support from it's younger generation of working citizens who prefer to "Bai-Lan" ( Let it rot ) , and those ghost cities that were built are being bulldozed, and are now bankrupt. That government's economy is dropping. So take over of Taiwan is stockpiling STUPITY on top-as a psychological ploy. We need to care what happens "across the pond" because sooner or later those "canoes" will arrive at our shores- driftwood included.

If you talk to China like the British talk to the Qing Dynasty after the Opium War, then Mehdi Hassan you might as well go back to India & join India's FM as his aide as both of you talk like you know everything but knows so little. Just go back to school & take some history classses.

I'm from Taiwan, our country, our government is Republic of China. Our country was founded in 1912, with the Kuomintang (KMT) government in power until 1949. After losing the civil war, the government relocated to Taiwan. Meanwhile, mainland China has been governed by the Communist Party since their victory in the civil war. From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan was a colony of Japan, and after World War II, it was restored to Chinese sovereignty. Aside from a small indigenous population, most of the major ethnic groups on Taiwan are from mainland China. The ancestors of many Taiwanese people migrated from China to Taiwan as early as 200-300 years ago, and many Taiwanese can trace their family origins to mainland China. We are one country, two governments. We share the same culture, language, and history-we are all Chinese.

However, some Taiwanese people are unwilling to acknowledge that they are Chinese. They are the separatists that Professor Gao refers to, or what we commonly call pro-Taiwan independence advocates. These people often identify more with Japan than with China. They use the banner of opposing Communist Party rule to smear everything related to mainland China. Unfortunately, the current ruling party in Taiwan, the DPP, represents this group of people. They divide the political identity of the Taiwanese people, brainwash schoolchildren and young people, and teach them to hate the Chinese. However, despite being in power, the DPP dares not pursue independence, because that would trigger an attack from the People's Republic of China on the Republic of China, as part of the reunification process. Moreover, independence would fundamentally violate our current constitution. The disturbing fact is that the United States takes advantage of the separatist forces, publicly claiming to uphold the "One China" principle, but in reality, they support the DPP, just as they interfere in other countries' affairs. Western media often claim that the Taiwanese are oppressed by China and want to rely on the United States to break free from China, but this is not the truth. Mainland China offers many special trade benefits to Taiwan, and Taiwanese people on the mainland are granted special status as "Taiwan compatriots," enjoying many conveniences. Tragically, Taiwan has become a pawn in the U.S.'s unjust suppression of China's development. Apologize for the long post
