Why do I ask that? We had many of them kind of African people who saw them selfs as Arabs in Zanzibar during the reunion of the Tanzanian republic in the mid 60s. The founding father, President Nyerere at the time, gave these people two options. One to embrace their Tanzanian identity or being shipped to the Middle East to reunite with their Arabic identity. I can tell that all of them dropped their identity crisis at the spot and decided to remain in Zanzibar.

This is not a new problem. This is an old problem. I studied African history in college, and Somalia has had this problem for centuries! And when the cold war happened in the 60s 70s and 80s in Somalia - the fight was are you African or are you Arabic. America armed the Arabic side and the USSR armed the African part. As a Somali person, this is absolutely comical to read. We have never had an issue identifying as African. Somalia was richer and had a more developed civilization than the Arab peninsula. Why would they want to identify with a group of people they saw as less developed? Somalia has been Pro African since the beginning of time. They have fought against colonization and freed other African people from colonization. They funded independence movements and help trained their fighters. Also, during the Cold War, both sides try to court Somalia. Unfortunately, they betrayed them. So please actually bothered to learn about the Somali civilization properly. Stop reading propaganda. They hated us since the beginning of time for fighting against subjugation. East Africa, as a whole has been hard to conquer.

I am not african but i can understand the reason for it. its conflation between cultural norm and ethnecity. In subsaharan or north africa, this tends to happen. I remeber in one incident, this arab shaikh reminding an ezyptian that he is not arab despite his fare skin complexion but north African. I came upon this sentiment just recently and I was surprised because, while I don't deny there may be Somalis who've encountered feeling ostracized by fellow Africans, it's not something I've ever heard. I know they experience discrimination based on harmful stereotypes, but I had just never encountered someone denying them being African before that comment. I feel like it comes more from them than others. The countries I know who don't like identifying as African are some of the North African ones (of course not everyone there shares this sentiment), but Somalia? That was new for me.

What complicates this is the Human Genome thing. There's now a geneticist named Razib Khan who is rewriting human history. He's found evidence of "admixture" (or interbreeding) that happened long ago between different population groups. Here's a couple things he's found for Africa: (1) Ethiopians have quite a bit of Arab ancestry, and they're related to Saudi Arabians. (2) people from Madagascar have quite a bit of Asian ancestry, and they're related to people in Borneo. There's KZbin videos where he talks about this.

I wouldn't call it rewriting human history as much as clearing things up, the truth seems to be popping up a lot more often now. The DNA does not lie and records the history of who is who, where they migrated from/to, who mixed with who etc... and as more DNA samples are gathered, examined and compared the picture becomes clearer.

Even though we, Somalis, speak our own language but Sudanese people look like us but they speak Arabic so they are Arabs by culture and language. Also, ancestry DNA tells me I am 49% middle- eastern, clearly we are black Africans with Arab connections, and Somalis are not alone, all east Africans share this issue.
