Wow.. I’m a Nigerian who gained American citizenship, and sad to say that some of us Africans don`t appreciate the great sacrifice African-Americans made, through advocating for their civil rights, to lay the foundation for Africans and many other people from around the world to be able to come to the United States and live in a country where people of all color have equal rights, at least in theory if not always in practice.

Thank you ! That's another thing, Africans come here to the US and I understand they are seeking a better life which means working hard. However in many cases it doesn't seem they try to interact with us as a people. We did build this country that all are benefitting from but we are not respected by whites or Blacks from other countries for our sacrifices.

I've encountered bigoted black americans as well. but, this is an issue throughout the diaspora. I'm from the Caribbean and I've also seen Africans talk down on us because we descended from slaves. What about other blacks from other Islands looking down on each other calling them names for instance, smallie . Blacks can't seem to get along wherever we are on this planet and it isn't because we're bad people but through outside influences - like the main culprits, need I call out their names? That's why I don't castigate any other black person no matter where we are on this planet because this was done for a reason to break the family apart. Thanks Phil for trying your best to heal divisions and to heal old wounds which were planted by outside forces.

I was fortunate to learn the African American history back home in kenya. I read a few books and watched documentaries about how every inch of progress that African Americans made it was destroyed. We were colonized too faced oppression and countless of other cruel things. My grandparents were slaves too picking tea/coffee and lived in quarters. Africa was divide like a cake by the Colonziers. i suggested watching documentary about "MauMau" in kenya.I m pretty sure they are similar stories in SouthAfrica, Congo Ghana. Yes we have the same problems africans that don't like other africans we call it "Xenophobia". I never looked down on AA brothers or sisters. Anyway lets show more out there.

Actually the name Africa comes from K.mt word Afre.KH which means Motherland. That is where the latin version of the word Africa came from and it meant Dark Continent and Africanus meant person from the dark continent. So any roman with that name was more liely from a black/african origin. Its white supremacy that has twisted the origin of the wotrd especially when rome and greece went to the continent to be taught by K.mt which is now called eygpt.

I've just about had enough of most of these comments below. As black people, globally we really need to grow the hell up and stop this unnecessary division. Do you think the KKK or apartheid government wouldn't have burnt you alive just cz you're from Europe, Jamaica, Brazil, Australia, Africa or America or a "Hebrew Israeli", at the end we're all BLACK and thats what the rest of the world sees, the more they realise how divided we are don't you think thats why they keep undermining and bullying our people cz they see no strength amongst us to stand up for each other. Its such a pity that the only time i ever see our people unite globally is when something bad happens to another group of black people somewhere in the world like with BLM, "Bring back our girls", Apartheid, wars, xenophobia. This is childish man. I don't care where you're from or what your lineage is, if you're black, no matter what damn percentage, i love you..

A brother from Djibouti East Africa said to me Africans are told, before they come here that African Americans are lazy and don't take advantage of the opportunities here. So many come here with pre conceived ideas which is not fair. Also there are Blacks in the US who have suffered tremendous hardships with no support of a family so they may seem lazy but no one knows another' s struggles.

It seems as though Black Americans are always talking down to any other black person that comes from anywhere outside of the US. I am Haitian-American, Or Afro Caribbean American, meaning my parents are Haitian/Caribbean, but I was born here, and soooo many african americans think I'm not black because I speak three languages, and they tell me, "You're not black , You're Haitian". Black Americans need to understand that black people are ALL OVER THE WORLD, And that there's a difference between race and nationality. The Black Americans that I've met, only seem to know the history that they were told by white people, and know nothing about other countries' cultures.

This doesn't only happen among blacks, sadly. For example, I've seen American Latinos criticized for not being "real" by ones that live in the islands, not speaking "proper" Spanish or having "authentic" knowledge of their heritage. Same happens with Asians if they live in America. They're not "real" because they have grown up with western influences. It's an "I'm better than you because I'm from the homeland" mentality.

There's stereotypes that cross both groups of blacks who are raised in Africa vs blacks who are raised in US. The difference in culture and experiences is the only division and we should be able to embrace it. This difference isn't racism, its xenophobia similar to colorism. Its just another way to divide us when we should be seeking ways to connect and embrace our differences so that we can grow as people.

The divide between Africans and Black Americans seem to be cultural which in honesty is understandable. Black American culture is a combination of West and Central African cultures and with substantial influence from European cultures due to the various laws and rules the dominant white society in America enforced. Africans have their own distinct cultures which may clash with Black American culture and values. African culture also seems to be far more conservative than Black American culture which is far more liberal than most African cultures.

The thing is Africans think African Americans are ignorant. Trust me I know my parents are African. Meanwhile African Americans think Africans are stuck up and don't qualify as 'one of them'. As a west african raised in America I really hate this tension. This only distracts us from the real issues. Also I think people forget that yes while African Americans struggled here, Africans also deal with racism back home. Take Northern Ghana. Today White men have gone there and bribed police to arrest any of the local miners over there. There are now many fatherless children over there in Northern Ghana who are fatherless because white men are greedy for gold. So both sides deal with racism.

I'll tell you what. I have been disrespected by African men almost my whole entire adult life. I've been told that we are lazy, we don't like to work, all these other things that don't apply to me at all because I am a very hard-working woman. There's a few girls that I've known for a long time that own their own braiding shop. And when I go there and get my hair braided, there's always these African men that come in there and talk about how lazy we are. And they don't seem to care that we can hear them or that we're listening to them. They don't care. I always thought that they thought that they were better than us. And then on the other hand a lot of us women don't like African men because they're controlling and abusive. I'm not sure how true that is because I've never dated an African man, but that's what I hear a lot.
@untappedhappiness
@untappedhappiness 7 жыл бұрын
LaShauna Brown-Willis The same stereotype is spread that African American men abusive women as well, in fact, misinformation is rampant nowadays between both communities. So instead of spreading things that even you cannot entirely verify, why not try and learn more about Africans. I've personally have had experiences where I was bullied by African American students in my school. The discrimination I faced was similar, and sometimes even harsher than that from the white students because this was a group I felt I belonged to. Once, I had an African American student say I must stink because she doesn't like the smell of the food her neighbor cooks and I must eat the same food. And I've had my head scarf torn off as well. Additionally in middle school, I was conversing with some African American students and brought up the issues we face as blacks and African Americans, to which *all* of girls responded saying I wasn't _black or African American._ This is despite the fact I was born here and am of African decent. Even so, I would never lump the actions of one African American person as being "the norm"; never did I regard this type of discrimination as a shared mindset, and you shouldn't either. Generalizing the actions of a whole group is what we should be fighting against, as struggle you even indicate in your comment, and yet you do the same. Learn more about the Africans you mentioned, try and explain to them from a place of understanding why their misconception is wrong. Maybe even learn about their culture and what country they might be from. Only through unity and understand can we stand together as one.

i grew up with black americans just hating africans. i learned to put my wall down (a bit) and not categorize all black americans as anti african but im not gonna lie...i got the most hate from black americans since elementary school. black americans would say africans have pet lions, we all have machine guns, and we are broke and live in huts. it's interesting because i have not seen one single african in america that isn't hard working. from the cab drivers to the doctors/ engineers. naturally, when africans see other africans in public we embrace one another because we are from the same place and when africans newly come over to america, they feel compelled to greet their "brothers" and "sisters" that are black american but how do the black americans typically respond? they insult the africans and say some stereotypical shit that we would expect from the whites. it is really sad that people with the same skin tone from all over the world cannot seem to get along and build each other up. so when africans come over to america and get insulted by the black americans they saw before the other races, and they excel in the university, then dont expect the africans that reach the peak of their success to befriend the black man who once ridiculed him.

I agree with Phil, there are many cultural differences and this may be one of the causes for the rifts/clashes. For example, I dated an African man, who looked down on me just because I have only earned a B.A. (rather than a M.A. or PhD). Even though, I make $96k a year, have over $100k in savings, own my home, have no debt, and have $50K in an emergency fund, he still felt like he was better than me or that I "still need to be educated". The kicker is, he makes less than me, has a huge amount of student loan debt, rents a room, and is still in the process of completing his M.A.. In this case, I feel that perhaps some of the African cultures put too much emphasis on education. Where as, we (Americans) value the accomplishments a person has over their education. In "the American culture", if you have the green, we don't care if you cant read! XD

Being from the Caribbean, I remember alot of black americans were really mean to my friends and family. I grew up and a very diverse city, we were treated worst by black americans. They would rob us, beat us up and name calling. Which was pretty messed up because we received the most hate from people that was the same color as I was. But now my best friend is black american from Chicago, her and her family are awesome.

I had an African friend telling me that "all lives matter not just black lives matter." And that was the last straw for me with her. It hurt me that she could or wouldn't understand what African Americans go thru. It seems like she related more with white people then black people, so when I realized that about her it hurt me deeply.

You can run but you cant hide. Yall gone realize we are the Israelites, we not Africans. It is true they got from the west coast of Africa but we not the same, thats why Africans sold us. Im not saying all people who come from Africa are not our people because we were scattered but in general we are not Africans. Thats why your friend cant relate. Matter of fact even Africa was colonized by whites you'd think they understand where we coming from.

You gotta understand one thing, not all Africans have the same mentality. African from a French Colony isn't the same as an African from an English Colony. They have different culture inspired by their Colonist and not all of them come to disrespect Blacks from other places. Even African themselves aren't United which lead wars like the Genocide in Rwanda. Don't take it personally as Africans dissing Blacks, but more like some countries from Africa dissing some African American.

I live in Minnesota, near one of the biggest Somali communities in our nation, I also live in a complex with the majority Kenyan/Ethiopian. I have only met one Somali person that was nice to me, the rest are really rude. The same is said for the Kenyan people. I have tried to be nice to my neighbors, and it has never worked. I have bought baby shower gifts, and birthday gifts, and they were still rude. The throw trash in my yard, they stole my sons shoes. they are hard to live near, and they look down on you for no reason. They actually make you not like them.

Yep, I’ve felt that isolation too. Which is why African Americans need to stick together and take pride our culture and community because literally no one gives a shit about us and only want to use our image and platforms to attain what they seek. Even though they imitate is heavily.
