Airdate: May 6, 1967
Whether you prefer the song played forward as “I Think We’re Alone Now” or backwards as “Mirage”, both were big hits for Tommy James in ’67. “I Think We’re Alone Now” peaked at #4 just two weeks ago and “Mirage” is at #40 today and will peak at #10 next month. I really wish they hadn’t cut the last 30 seconds of the song to go to the Hotline. It looks the kids are surprised and disappointed as well.
The AB regulars dancing today: Famous Hooks & June Strode (in front of the podium at the opening at 0:05), Don Sanuskar & Roni Menacker (walking out of the stands at 1:15), Frank Vanderpuil & Peggy Waggoner (1:51), Marcia Silverman (2:03), John Pollard (2:04), Marcel Poitier (2:11), Judy Gordon (2:13), Michael Michaud (2:24), Frank Herrera (2:25), Barbara Prentiss (2:36), Steve Rodrick (3:05), and on the riser today are Stan Sobern & JoAnn Edmonds.
…..And in a few hours from this broadcast, the 93rd running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs. Black citizens of Louisville, who had been protesting for months to get laws passed banning housing discrimination, had threatened to disrupt the race. The Ku Klux Klan also threatened to show up “in full regalia” to fight the protestors. After the governor sent in the National Guard and Martin Luther King came to Louisville and convinced organizers not to protest at Churchill Downs, there was no disruption. 30-to-1 shot “Proud Clarion”, with jockey Bobby Ussery, won the race and “The Roses” and Louisville would go on to pass a fair housing law in 1968.
(Enjoy today’s 145th Kentucky Derby @Jean Lankton!)

@@voiceguy3635 So true. I don't recall the song Sound of Love by The Five Americans. I googled it and listened to it and it didn't even sound familiar. Yet their song Western Union which I loved charted in the Spring of 1967. Did Sound of Love even make the Top 40 that year? My AM station WRKO (Boston area) back then only seemed to play Top 40 songs. All that aside, I always cherished the songs of my being in the 8th grade, that is music from September of 1966 to mid June of 1967. It was a Catholic School grades 1 to 8 and we were considered "Royalty" as 8th graders.

It made the top 20 here in Michigan. Many songs were local hits,but not necessarily national hits. My local station had their own top 40 list published every week and would be released at record stores in the area,based on requests to the station,over the phone--and sales in the city. I THINK "Sound of Love" has a youtube video and was a decent hit for the Five Americans.

That school year was coming to an end and the songs became in a sense more enjoyable with the warm weather setting in and longer days. I was still in diapers in the summer of '67 but every radio in our home in Easton was tuned to THE FAMOUS 56! Dick Clark used to deejay at Frolics Ballroom in Allentown, where my parents met in 1957. Dad had an invitation to dance on Bandstand in December of that year. He had to take our cousin Patsy because my grandparents wouldn't let my Mom go to Philadelphia with a boy they barely knew - and with a reputation like his! But as fate would have it, a truck rear-ended his Mercury just before Doylestown and they never made it to the studio.

Happy big 6-0 to Gayle Lecus!!! I've been waiting all week to tell her! 🎂🌹 Loved Tommy James! The dancers were groovin' good when the music ended. Frank V. had his head boppin' and movin' with Peggy. Stan is always energetic especially on the riser. I wonder if this was the end of taping day. Our kids look a bit tired. Yup....its DERBY DAY IN KENTUCKY. The greatest 2min in sports. You probably know the favorite Omaha Beach, had breathing problems earlier in the week and has been scratched as well as a horse called Haikal. Post position no.1 will be empty for the race. The weather although relatively dry and overcast at the moment, is not predicted to be so around the 6:30p Eastern post time. There are hats hats and more hats, men and women. One of our local newscasters looks like she is wearing a drone...others appear to have some derivation of a swamp on their noggins. It's hard to believe men's sport coats are produced in some of those colors. If you really want to be swanky, buy yourself a $1000 mint julep. Comes in a gold cup with the Derby emblem AND a real sprig of mint (not the syrupy mint served to the normal folks). The infield hasn't fired up just yet, but its early. For future reference to Sodom and Gomorrah, think Derby infield. If you ain't seen it there, you DON'T need to see it. I'm leaning toward Tacitus as my favorite but track conditions will change some odds today. So whether you are wagering, going to a Derby party and picking a name out of a hat....or like me you're planning on sitting back and watching a great horse race steeped in tradition......good luck to all! May all the horses and riders have a safe ride. ☂️🏇🏇🏇🏇🌹🌹🌹🤞🎺

@@keithidota oh no....I was watching from Lake Cumberland. The Stewards probably HATED that. To have to disqualify a win in the Derby is horrible. But the horse did step directly into the path of the one racing behind him and just a hair to the side. I guess it was a good call....but it sure takes the fun from the Derby. I hated to see it, I really did.

Tommy James said this song is the melody of "I Think We're Alone Now" played backwards. Someone put ITWAN in the reel to reel the wrong way and they liked how it sounded so much that they wrote down the chords and built a new song over it.

I just saw a video in which Tommy James said they accidentally put the tape for a reel to reel in backwards while trying to play I Think We're Alone Now. They said to themselves "Hey, that sounds pretty good!" The chord progression for Mirage is I Think We're Alone Now played backwards!

@@YCDTI Just a few days ago when the Shebang clip was posted here I looked around for other Shebang clips and found Mirage. (It was like a few weeks ago when I posted a comment on another YT channel about a particular tv show episode and voila! a few days later that episode was posted on that channel.) Anyways, the poster of that Mirage clip got the date wrong (you would never do that) and the entire song was played but with an ending different from the version we usually hear.
@YCDTI
@YCDTI 5 жыл бұрын
Hi @Keith Idota, I think the Shebang "Mirage" clip (at least one of the two that I've seen posted) says it is from 1966 in the title. Several of the commenters mentioned that it was from '67, but the title remains 1966. I think the song ending you are talking about is the original 45 ending where, over the last 30-35 seconds, the lyrics are repeated by the back up singer, like an echo. I much prefer this version to the echoless album version that is played more commonly today. The 45 version is the one you hear on the Shebang clip(s) and you would have most likely heard the same version in this AB clip if they hadn't cut to the Hollywood Hotline right before that part of the song began. (I overdubbed it with the original 45 version, but we never got to the part of the song that was different anyways)

Good quality black and white early video tape. Much better video quality than the crude kinescope recordings of the 1950's and early to mid-1960's. Even with the advent of video tape invented by Ampex in the late 1940's, kinescopes (a 16mm camera photographing a television monitor) were still in use well into the 1960's as early video tape recorders were very expensive and many stations could not afford their costs. My local NBC station (WBRE, channel 28 UHF) did not have a video tape recorder until 1964.

I kinda wish I was around back then,I was born a year after this but there's something mystical about 60s music that has captured me since my teen years in the early 80s when I was glued to my clock radio to the point where I'm sort of an encyclopedia for 60s music 🤷🏾‍♂️
